Mail.app
Justine's "considerations" should be taken with a grain of salt though.

I use Thunderbird as well and have loved it since the first day. It may not integrate well but I never use Address Book, iChat, or iCal so I don't even notice these problems.

Only because until the next version of Office, I've got it running in Rosetta, and it sucks. It crashes several times a day and has trouble with the volume of mail I've got it handling. (Granted, one of the reasons I switched to it is because it handled the volume of mail better than Mail.app, so it's still an improvement.) If I didn't have to worry about its speed and stability, I'd like it. I agree that I like having my tasks (alarms, especially), calendar, e-mail and contacts all in one place.
There's still so much room for improvement in this area, though. I'd love to see some real innovation instead of the "wheeeee, HTML e-mail!" that Apple's all proud of. Still, I'm looking forward to Leopard's Mail.app and Penelope; a sleek aesthetic, stability, and a robust e-mail client are far more important to me than an application that integrates all the other PIM stuff.

For me using 2.16 GHz MacBook Pro w/2GBs if ram, Entourage works just as fast as on my native 1 GHz PPC PowerBook (actually, it's the same speed as it was on my MBP as before I upgraded the RAM to 2 GHz). It never crashes on me either (never crashed on my 1 GHz 12" as well).

Damn, how much mail volume are dealing with? I get 100-200 emails over 8 accounts every time I open Mail. That's is on a Blueberry iMac DV 400 with Tiger and 512 MB of RAM.

Okay, you definitely destroy me on volume. I'm pretty light amateur when it comes to my e-mail (it's all personal stuff).

Eudora. I've been using it since version 3.12. It is very easy to use and I've had no problems integrating it with other mail servers.

Honestly it sounds like more than it really is total volume wise (check a couple times a week unless I know something is being sent), however it's still quite a bit a pop, wellfleation. Like you it's mostly personal.

.tsooJI stand corrected. I don't consider web based mail to be the same as mail clients like mail.app and Eudora, though.
Perhaps we should take this out back to MiniThink and duke it out. By duke it out, I mean, call each other names.

Try Thunderbird. I use it to manage 2 million+ emails and it doesn't skip a beat, so long as you use your filters properly and keep your folders compacted.

Well, I can only base my opinion on my own experience. I'm glad it works well for you. On my Mac Pro (also 2GB RAM), it crashes quite frequently.

I have a lot of rules that filter messages to their respective destinations, so I dunno about the daily influx, but my database is about 2.5GB right now. Mail.app would beachball all the time, making it unbearable to use; Entourage crashes pretty frequently, but it's dealing with it without beachballing all the time (at least for now). Hopefully by the time it becomes unbearable as well, I'll have found a better solution. =)

I use Mail, but I only get a tiny amount of mail. Around four messages a day at the most.

¿Weird? I have it open all the time (set to display alert on my desktop, display message subject and preview, bring application to front, animate icon) and I don't think I ever remember it crashing even once. Safari, well, that's a different story!

Re: What do you use for an email app?
Ouch! Two suggestions! (You'll probably want to use both of them, Justg.)
1.) Prune and rebuild your database as much as possible. I understand there will be things you always need but 2.5 GB sounds rather on the excessively large side, especially if you do not have a company, and doubtless the main reason you are crashing and beach balling.
2.) Minimize your rules as much as possible. It takes a little work and imagination but you can often combine or alter rules use less if them to do the same thing.

Re: What do you use for an email app?
I use Mail on my G4 iMac and Thunderbird on my winders lappy. I also use Mail on my G5 PowerMac at work, but toggle to Thunderbird when I need to send an HTML email with embedded links and such.
Entourage was a horrible piece of crap for me. I tried it because it works better with the calendar function in Exchange but gave up. Horribly slow and crashed at least 3-5 times a week. Rotten junk mail handling. Overall suckage. Even tried reinstalling the Office suite and trashing preference files, but nothing helped.

Re: What do you use for an email app?
I use Mail to control my Gmail account. It does what it says, and it's more convenient than having to go through the web client. Entourage has some nice features that I have no use for.

I should try Entourage. I'm happy with mail.app for now but I might give it a shot.

Thunderbird, because I was able to import my email from TB on my PC.
I've used mail.app in the past. It blows. Entourage was nice, but I couldn't figure out how to import my old email correctly.
