So, my MacBook bites the dust...

I've been to busy to post this up before now, but I figure it's time I did.

My beloved MacBook decided that at the Apple Tech Talks, would start turning off randomly. I had see this before, but it wasn't until then that I took notice. (Before then, I had just sworn that I'd left it running.) Rather embarrassing and annoying to say the least. Fortunately it was repeatable, make it work hard and off it went. Even better, when I took it to the shop, it wouldn't even turn on. Chimed and then turned off. Then it wouldn't even chime!

So, back to Apple it goes to get repaired. Hopefully it is a motherboard replacement, they can replace those damn early RAM latches that are broken as well. I actually got told that the very first Macbooks had a different design that didn't work and were quickly and quiety replaced. Was told to send it back for repairs under warranty.

This is my first problem with an early model Mac. Pitty, my iMac is a year old and hasn't skipped a beat since I bought it in January last year.

Poor little MacBook. Anyone else had this problem?

Re: So, my MacBook bites the dust...

Can't say I had the problem. The only problem I had was with the latch of the lid being broken so when I closed the lid it never went to sleep. I had a cranky MacBook for a while but it is all better now.

Sorry for the bad luck! Hope it works out for you! smile

Not personally, but I've read enough in industry rags about the MBs and MBPs not being up to par with Apple's usual quality that even if I could get one right now, I'd hold off. Glad to hear it's being sorted under warranty, though!

Re: So, my MacBook bites the dust...

Well that's what the guys at the Tech Talks said it would be. Even the memory loading thing was under warrenty.

Aparently the C2D doesn't have the problem and the 2nd load of CD macbooks didn't either. Just the first ones. Either way, it ain't starting up and it's under warrenty so it should get fixed.

I had the same problem. Had to send it in for repair twice but I finally got the second revision logic board and it's been smooth sailing since.

Well my iMac has been going strong, but I guess there isn't much to go wrong and the case was pretty well tested.

I want my MacBook back!

Re: So, my MacBook bites the dust...

Damn it, no sooner did I get it back, it's gonna get booked in again.

Now when it runs out of battery, it turns off. Not sleep mode, straight off. (Did it to me again while I was writing this post and I bumped the plug)

So, motherboard replacement last time. What is it this time? They forget to plug in the PRAM battery? What is weird is my battery shows no flashing lights, it goes blank. Is it the charging circuit this time?

Also the serial number in System Profiler just says 'SystemSerialNumb' which I find odd.

Wonderful! If I have to send it in again after this, it's going in through a window...

That's because you've had your main logic board replaced.

I had to send my macbook in to get the battery replaced (way to go compusa roll). So look forward to that.

I still find that kinda odd. When OS X installs, does it hardwire the serial numbers or something?

Man, I would love that. Still, I have no explanation as to why it will now just power off. Been happening since the MB replacement. First I thought I was going crazy, now I caught it doing it today.

Basically it appears to be letting the battery drain till there is nothing left and just turns off, not even being able to sustain sleep mode. Any suggestions of what I should do when I take it in this time? (Other than go in wearing jeans and a black turtleneck.)

The OS has nothing to do with the serial number. When the machine is constructed, the serial number is printed on the case and on the box, and it is embedded in the system ROM. When the logic board is replaced, this board doesn't have the same serial number as the case and box, therefore it isn't put in ROM, so the System Profiler doesn't report the incorrect serial number.

In other words, the System profiler only reports serial numbers for original config machines.

Mine did the same thing but Apple determined that it was a defective battery, hopefully the logic board is still good.

Great so I had a motherboard and a battery fail in the same few weeks. Sweet, new battery!

big_smile

So basically, replacement MBs don't have a serial number. The case owns the computer's serial number and the motherboard initially gets the same serial.

Oh, they most definitely have serial numbers. They might or might not be the same as the one on the case, though. The serial number is stored in the machine's NVRAM, though, so...

Re: So, my MacBook bites the dust...

You don't need to send your whole computer in. If you call Applecare they will send you a new battery and then you will just have to send the old one back after the new one is received. I am on my 3rd battery in my MBP because of the same problem you are experiencing. Both times I had my new battery in 2 days. When you call they will ask if you have calibrated the battery, which is impossible when it randomly shuts down so just explain that you can't, and they will ask if you have reset the PRAM, so be sure to do that before you call.

There are lots of posts on Apple's MBP discussion board about this problem.

That is such a bunch of BS. Almost every Mac I've ever owned has been a revision A. People who say this act like later revisions never go in for repair. No one has ever shown any statistics that revision A models are more prone to problems.

Re: So, my MacBook bites the dust...

Reset the SMC reset the PRAM, tried a calibration. No luck. Craps out at about 7% remaining.

Cool I'll just go in there and tell them to get me a new one then. Thanks for the tip.

Same here. then again, the only Mac I got was a Rev A (iMac Core Duo).
Has there been any issues with that one?
Oh, yeah. The iMac CD was a iMac G5 (iSight) with a CD chip in it (and minor HW changes).

iMac DV Rev A - No Prob
Pismo Rev A - No Prob
iMac CD Rev A - No Prob
MB CD Rev A - MB Replacement and probably battery next week.

Well, 25% of Rev A macines seem to suffer the problem if you look at my statistics. Also out of the 3 CD MacBooks I know of, 2 have failed.

Re: So, my MacBook bites the dust...

My sister's macbook has a problem with the battery as well.  It shows an X over the battery indicator and does not hold a charge, as in it shuts off as soon as you pull the plug.  We took it to the apple store and they replaced the battery, but it still gives the X.  She couldn't leave it there to get it replaced cause she had work stuff and it would take a few days, but they said its probably the logic board.
