Dark Iron, is it worth it?

So I've started blacksmithing with my level 60 warrior since I got tired of engineering. I've got a bit of a ways to go but I did some farming for ore in the searing gorge. There is a lot of dark iron there which I understand you need to goto BRD to learn how to smelt it and from what I've seen you need to give a lot of mats just to learn it.
Is it worth it for me to try to smelt it or would it be better to just sell the ore and move on to other things? Can it be prospected for gems and if so any worthwhile gems?
(BTW, never done BRD so I have no idea how easy or hard it would be to do this)

I would say its not even worth bothering to learn to smelt anymore. Its not used in any 60+ recipes, and a lot of the recipes that it is used in also take mats from MC.

when you think about it I'd have hoped Blizz would have found a way not to screw you over if you'd spent time getting mats and recipes, like take all those uber 60 items and make them 55 so you could still sell em and make use of em before hitting outland hmm  Or something, anything besides "oh all that gear? yeah it's crap now, why did you even look at it?"

Blizz might be leaving something for people to do who do not choose to buy TBC.  However I doubt that, since Blizz wants people to spend money for the update.  I agree its most likely a goof due to rushing out TBC.  I'm hoping they fix this in some update.  Blizz has already hinted at adding new instances into TBC, rather like they added instances to the regular game every so often.

Given the large expense for changing professions, I strongly suggest not doing that.  Its more convenient to just create one toon for each profession.

Hmmm, I'l have to send some dark iron ore to my jewelcrafter and check if its prospectible or not.  I've never tried.

Re: Dark Iron, is it worth it?

Thanks for the responses. I figure I'm just going to forget the dark iron. I did get a gem from a vein so I assume it can be prospected. I did change to Blacksmithing and in 3 days already at 225 whereas my engineering was 280. I've actually made a profit by doing this, small margin but profit nonetheless.
I did some reading up on what gems you can get from Dark Iron veins, some pretty nice looking ones. Worth trying proespecting it I guess.

It's not prospectable.

Yeah, I wouldn't bother with the dark iron crap.

Re: Dark Iron, is it worth it?

Dark Iron is only good to level mining when you are at the stage where you need true silver to level, and mithril doesn't cut it.  I was able to level quickly doing that.  Check out http://mapwow.com on where to mine the good stuff.

I chose the rogue to be my miner, because I can stealth in like 6 times for some really good mining.  I also can lava surf to the smelter w/o problems once you know how.  But, it's all simply not worth it anymore.

Dark Iron cannot be prospected, tried it. sad

Blizzard basically obsoleted the old game.  The old game had so many gaps on continuity and balance, as far as different levels go.  Then they made blue/purple  item patterns that required zerg impossible matts, which were obsoleted by raiding drops.

Now with the new expansion, pre-BWL items are not all that valuable as they are easily replaced with BC greens/blues that cost less to repair.
