My MX 1000 seems to be on its last leg... Recommend replacement?

sad

The best mouse I've ever used. Bought it about 2 years ago when I got my Mac mini. It was $79 then at Staples.

So it seems to be dying. It cuts out a lot. Lost clicks. And once in a while it'll freak out and press every button at once causing all my functions to go awry. (Fortunately none of the buttons are mapped to a destructive function.) I've actually disassembled it a few times to clean it out. Now it seems to not want to live anymore. The battery is also dying faster now so it's definitely time for a new one.

But now it seems Logitech doesn't make it anymore, nor do they make an equivalent.

What I need is a mouse with the same amount of buttons. The sheer amount. This one has 8 buttons. The normal ones, wheel clicking, left and right wheel clicking/tilting, two buttons above and below the wheel and three more on the side. I have all of them mapped to functions I use every day. So whatever I replace this with needs to be at least 8 buttons.

I'm spoiled.

Is there any equivalent out there? I can't find an equal on Logitech's site. They have dozens of mice, but none have the same amount of buttons. Some look the same, but aren't.

Should have known when I got it that I'd be spoiled by 8 buttons. (Would be 10 if the wheel tilting was mappable too.)

Re: My MX 1000 seems to be on its last leg... Recommend replacement?

I just ordered a Logitech G5 off NewEgg for 40 bucks, better res then the MX and only 5 more bucks.  A buddy of mine has one and I got sick of playing with his and not having my own.  I think that logitech makes the best mice ever and you should buy another MX or get a G5.
But I prefer wired mice, I think here is logitech's closest product to you old one, cordless.  http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/produ … NTID=12134
Other then that I'm not sure, Logitech seems to be the only competitor in the multi button cordless market.

The MX 1000 arguably evolved into the MX revolution, which was one of the most frequently praised peripherals last year.

IMHO, the revolution looks considerably sexier, it has some awesome scroll wheels, it comes with a travel size antenna for laptop users, and the button placement / weighting is smarter.

That said, the drivers seem to have taken a step back. If you can put up with a longer setup time, you'll be rewarded with a nice input device.

It looks sexier.. But it doesn't seem to have enough buttons.. I need at least 8 customizable clicks. Wheel button included.

I literally use every single button every day hundreds of times a week. I can't live without them. Tell me Logitech has something available with 8 buttons.

Re: My MX 1000 seems to be on its last leg... Recommend replacement?

The MX 1000 and Revolution both have 10 programable buttons that I can think of (I'm counting things like wheal tilt). The horizontal scroll wheal isn't really a scroll wheal in the sense that the vertical wheal is. It's more like three buttons assigned to a wheal-ish input device. It' doesn't scroll 360 degrees. It's something you push forward, pull back, and push down. Personally, I think it's smarter then the 1000's thumb buttons.

The revolution's programable buttons consist of:
Right click, left click, search button, side wheal forward, side wheal back, side wheal down, forward button, back button, scroll wheal tilted right, scroll wheal tilted left.

If the Search button can be reprogrammed to do whatever I want, then it sounds like a good deal to me.

Why switch to something else when you can buy another one just like it?

Before you go out and buy a new mouse, try updating the logitech software if you haven't done so already. Also try moving the receiver closer to where the mouse is, I found that with mine the battery lasts longer if the receiver is as close as practical and no obstructions between the mouse and receiver.
I also found it to behave strangely if I had my monitor blocking the signal.

/me looks at the Microsoft Intellimouse he bought in 2001.

You paid $79 for a mouse and it only lasted 2 years?

Damn.

Whatever you buy, see if Best Buy will sell you an extended warranty.

It's called a "double-click," not a "double-strike-it-with-a-hammer."

Damn.

And as far as having 8 mapped buttons goes - there's a thing next to your mouse with 108 buttons. You can press up to five of them at once. Most commands already are mapped to a button or combination of buttons.

It's called a keyboard. I highly reccomend using it frequently.

Ehh, some people like a good multibutton mouse.

I would argue that there's a lot of neat interaction research pertaining to why one would find themselves more effective with certain tasks mapped to their dominant hand. Moreover, with multimedia apps a multi button mouse can save you from tracking back and forth between palettes or trying to remember obscure keyboard shortcuts to summon manipulation or selection tools. And then there are games... and that's a no brainer.

Mine's got 5 buttons.

My dominant (right) hand spends almost half the time on the keyboard.

Obscure? What's obscure about Ctrl-Shift-' to turn on autogrid in Illustrator? You have to remember, I use Windows. wink

(and, fwiw, in Windows, three keystrokes will make any non-heirarchial menu selection, no mouse movement needed. You really DO learn the ones you use the most, and it DOES save you time.)

And then there are games... and that's a no brainer.

UT would be hell without the keybaord, so I'm not sure what you mean here.

I have long since come to terms with the fact that I have an unnatural talent for remembering keyboard shortcuts. I accept that most "normal" people interact with the computer primarily through the mouse. I actually get frustrated when I have to teach people how to do something that I do every day via keyboard shortcut, and find myself unable to remember where to find the button or menu selection.

I do, however, reserve the right to make fun of people with more mouse buttons than fingers. I mean, really, at that point, you might as well start mapping function keys - that's what they're for, after all.

I kind of miss the keyboard layout on the Commodore 64 - it had the F-keys on the left hand side in a column, where you could sort of use them like a numeric keypad. Always seemed like a good idea to me, but I've never seen anybody emulate it.

Do you still have your receipt by any chance?  If you do, it has a 3 year warranty and Logitech will replace it free.

1 more vote for the MX Revolution. I have it. You can program all of the buttons to do whatever you want, and the buttons can even be programmed to serve different purposes in different apllications. My favorite part is the scroll wheel on top (there's another rocker-wheel on the side) has a mechanical feature that can change it to be just a free-spinning wheel for smoother scrolling, or you can press down on it and it will change to be more like a normal scroll wheel with "bumps" to move you down the page in tiny increments.

But yeah, it's awesome. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Wrong.  I tried one of these recently.  Most of the buttons have only 2 or 3 preset functions available in Logtech Control Center.  Hell, even the center scroll wheel button could not be configured.

I had mine replaced and they did not even  ask for the receipt. So you could try this before buying another one

Really?  My MX1000 went and I contacted them and they wouldn't do anything for me because I didn't have the receipt.  I went out and bought the MX Rev...still like the 1000 better but the Rev is nice too.

The drivers are not organized well, I'll give you that.

That said, if you select an "advanced click" or "keystroke" you can program a button to do whatever the hell you want it to do.

The center scroll wheal button can't be configured because there is no center scroll wheal "button." Pressing the scroll wheal switches it from incremental to fly wheal mode. Moreover, I'd need to look at this on my other computer, but I'm fairly sure you can set the fly wheal mode or incremental mode to be the default for particular applications.

There are also 3rd party mouse drivers if you really can't stand logitech's control center.

Soo... apparently this is going to be a harder decision than I was thinking?

I don't know if I still have the reciept. I do still have the box though... Nope.. not in the box. I got it from Staples waaaay back then... two years ago.

I don't want to pay for a mouse driver. Doesn't USB Overdrive cost money? I refuse to pay extra for what the supplied drivers should do out of the box.
