Best Buy is gonna sell Macs in 2007
http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.a … es-in-2007
Not a bad move I would say. For Apple that is.

It remains to be seen how best Buy actually deals with the Mac section but it at least fill a hole in my area that's being formed by CompUSA's closure.

Dismissing the fact that it's come up before that they started a Mac test store program and such, reading the article told me that. Of course, it leaves out the fact that it's about 200 stores out of over 1150. But still if place in the right areas that could be good. (Not that I trust Best Buy to place stores in the right areas.)

WOW. Someone there commented that CompUSA went under because they sold Macs as well as PCs.
Yay stupid people.

But it's true.
Apple went out of business because they only sold macs!
Do you see any Apple stores around anymore? Nope - they are all gone.

Electronics store suffer like fashion. If you've been around too long, you go away.

Re: Best Buy is gonna sell Macs in 2007
is there a reason to buy apple products at a best buy rather than an apple store? are they going to undercut apple's prices or something? it just seems like there are apple stores everywhere and personally I would rather buy straight from apple.

Other than not wanting to drive 70+ miles to get to an Apple store, I cant think of a reason someone would go to a Best Buy over an Apple Store. Of course personally I might go 70 miles out of the way to get a Mac itself, but not for something like a mouse or router or the like.

Re: Best Buy is gonna sell Macs in 2007
that makes sense, i just assume apple stores are within a decent distance of everyone, but it seems like i need to do some re-assuming.
peripherals definitely seem worth buying elsewhere though, as apple seems to overprice those quite a bit.

Well, they did a trial, and it seemingly worked out well for them.
When Apple did this back in the day they were displaying machines with OS 9. When OS 9 locked up, which it always did, they didn't really have a staff that understood how to resolve the problems.
OS X 10.4 is considerably more idiot proof. You almost never see an new OS X demo box locked up. They don't need a baby sitter like the old OS 9 demo machines did. It was easy for sales staff to hate an OS that was both foreign and broken.
Moreover, all the hardware is the same now. You're really just selling someone a case that's designed much better and a machine that also has the ability to boot OS X. As a salesman it becomes more difficult to have a platform bias when Apple can sell you a reasonably priced Windows box that looks better then everything else on display.

I really, really hope they're smart enough to put "Deep Freeze" on it like the Apple Stores do.

They are everywhere in select locations.
There are none near me. There is however a best buy near me.

I find that the more malicious pranks are often the simplest. For example, a Apple Script or an annoying Javascript with a Safari's application icon pasted on the document.

Does the "restart" aScript still work? That one never gets old.

Re: Best Buy is gonna sell Macs in 2007
I wonder how much of a good thing this will be for prospective buyers. I have never once had a good experience at a Best Buy. I always leave with more questions than answers to any questions I came in with after talking to their brilliant staff.
Sorry to any who work at BB, but my experience has been less than stellar.
Edit: O'course, that was when I was still a Windoze user

Well if its the Pasadena store then I can agree. But if its the Rancho Cucamonga Apple store, i'd rather take my chances with inept CompUSA/Best Buy employees. That place is staffed with the most moronic teenagers i've ever seen. I can only stand to walk into that place for 2-5mins before I have to leave.
This is not really new news with Best Buy. They tried the do it before but as others have pointed out, the problem is where the inept salesmen come in who get paid to sell other computers over Macs. I just don't see where this is going to end well. Would be best for Apple to just start putting in more Apple stores. I would go nuts if for once they put one less than 45 mins away from me.
