4G iPod saves soldier's life
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tiki/44561 … ppleusers/
Kevin Garrad (3rd Infantry Division) was on a street patrol in Iraq (Tikrit I believe) and as he rounded the corner of a building an armed (AK-47) insurgent came from the other side.
The two of them were within just a few feet of each other when they opened fire. The insurgent was killed and Kevin was hit in the left chest where his IPod was in his jacket pocket. It slowed the bullet down enough that it did not completely penetrate his body armor. Fortunately, Kevin suffered no wound.
It looks like some of the folks at Apple are going to hook Kevin up with a new iPod. Hopefully is a nice thick 80gig iPod.

Yes.
I, for one, am fully in favor of bulletproof iPods.

Yes.
Figuratively if you're an Apple fan boy, literally if you've transferred the bible onto your iPod.

Re: 4G iPod saves soldier's life
I kind of feel bad for saying this, and I admit I'm not as soldier... but if one were on patrol in a place where one might get shot at, wouldn't listening to an iPod constitute an unnecessary distraction/risk?
Otoh, if he were just carrying (not listening to) it along for luck, or sentimental reasons, or because stuff left in the barracks tends to walk away, well, good on him, and regardless, I guess it was the right decision in this instance.

I only have part of it on my iPod at any given time.
But I only have a 4GB mini.
And my battery is starting to suck - looks like I need to order one of those kits.

I would imagine he was not wearing his ear buds at the time.
I would wager common sense like that kicks in fairly quickly when you're in a country where thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people are trying to kill you on a daily basis.

I also often have my ipod with me but am not listening to it.
If he was listening to a song we'd have a link to the music store, what more proof do you need.

Or people could stop fighting each other.

Has anyone seen the other pics from that story?

I wouldn't react that well if someone shot my iPod!

My hard earned tax dollars go towards building advanced arms - and you want us not to use them?
If I'm paying for nukes, then by golly, we better use them!

guys he probably dosen't listen to it while he is out doing patrols etc. He prob just keeps it on his so that when he gets some downtime he can kick on some tunes and escape the hell that is around him for a few minutes.

Yeah, I doubt he was listening to it at the time.
Lexan and polished metal may be scratch prone, but they're pretty damn tough. I hate to think of what might've happened had he been carrying a Zune.

They'd be digging parts of Zune out of him.

Yeah, I doubt he was actually listening to it at the time. Glad that he is okay.

I only hope he was listening, and had some noise-isolating headphones in to protect him from the noise of someone firing a gun right next to you.

Yeah that's what I thought.. All I know is that the only way that I'd be carrying my iPod and not listening to it is if the battery died and I've tried all available methods to revive it including wiring in my cellphone battery with a random metal wire or piece of cable lying on the street (I've actually done this once). In my case both batteries have a similar voltage. No, it didnt work. But back to my point, I'm just too addicted to my iPod. Even if I was walking through Iraq with a target painted on me, I'd probably be listening to my ipod (yes, I know I'm stupid.)
