Official "We Want a Consumer Mac Tower" Thread
It seems like half the threads in this forum boil down to people bickering over whether or not Apple should release a mid-range expandable Mac tower. Maybe this thread can be a place for that debate so the other threads can stay on-topic.
My Points:
* An affordable consumer Mac Tower has been notably missing from Apple's lineup for years.
* I can anecdotally attest that there are many many people, myself included, who would love to buy an expandable Mac with no monitor, but do not want to spend $2500+ on a Mac Pro workstation.
* The Mac Mini has failed to be the Headless iMac that we all pined for for so long. It is woefully underpowered, grossly overpriced, and cannot be easily upgraded with inexpensive RAM, HDs, and GPUs.
* If Apple's lineup is posited to "force" buyers to get an iMac or pony up for a Mac Pro, I contend that this does not work. I personally am not going to buy a computer with the monitor attached unless it is a laptop, and I'm not going to spend $2500+ on a tower.
* A consumer tower is completely within the realm of possibility, based on Apple's current lineup. Take the specs of the 17-inch iMac, at $1199:
2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512
160GB Serial ATA drive
SuperDrive 8X (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Keyboard & Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X - U.S. English
ATI Radeon X1600 128MB SDRAM
17-inch widescreen LCD
AirPort Extreme
Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
Remove the 17-inch screen, add some expansion slots and Apple can easily sell this machine at a profit for $1099, maybe even $999. They could sell it in different configurations up to $1499
That is the machine I want to buy, in a slick case that is more attractive and smaller than the Mac Pro case. Why Apple does not do this is beyond me. It seems unfortunately rare that they deliver a product that really hits the nail on the head as far as what consumers are looking for - but based on discussions in this and other Mac forums, this would be a slam dunk.

It doesn't have to be a tower, just something between an iMac and a Mac Pro. I'd like a little more than an iMac but I don't want a full out workstation.

Re: Official "We Want a Consumer Mac Tower" Thread
And I think that's what helps the case right there; Apple choosing to use the terminology of "workstation" proves that the Mac Pro is high above that of someone who just merely dinks around with taxing stuff and mostly just needs the machine for browsing with a slight emphasis on expandability.

And the beautiful thing about expandability is that you could configure it to your needs!

Mac compatible Fax Modem, eSATA, or is it just the display tax (no upgradable video card at under $1999, only internal monitors at between $800 & $2199, and no spanned external monitors at under $2200)?

Re: Official "We Want a Consumer Mac Tower" Thread
I'm with you on this one. It boggles the mind that they don't have a machine in this range. The Mac Mini doesn't seem to fit in anywhere. It would be an excellent entry level machine if the price were entry level. Until the price comes down it doesn't make any sense to me. Also, if you made a larger case (bigger than a mini, smaller than a Pro) you would be able to use less expensive components (e.g. 3.5" hard drive, tray loading optical drive, etc.) so the profit margin would be higher.
Seems like a no brainer so perhaps there is some inside knowledge that Steve has and we don't?

I couldn't afford one for at least a year, but I would love a Mac Tower. (I would also love that sub-notebook that has been talked about for awhile)

Eventually he caved and we got the Mighty Mouse, so never say never.
I too would like to see one. The only reason I have a desktop Windows box really. I didn't want an iMac because they're too limited.
Personally, with the low power consumption and heat output of the mobile C2Ds, I would like to see another Cube (but without some of the annoyances of the last one). Everyone wanted one, but they were too expensive. If Apple could keep the costs down, they'd probably sell quite a few.
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

I guess the answer to the cube thing is the Mac Mini, except if you want the precise design of the cube, which obviously won't happen...

Re: Official "We Want a Consumer Mac Tower" Thread
Yeah, while the cube was neat it wasn't exactly a Prosumer machine, it was a fancy iMac.
If they made the iMac just a little more upgradable (not just after purchase but the bto options too) I'd be fine.
Personally, I think the new iMac design is going to go in that direction. The Intel transition really seemed like they threw the Core processor in the G5 iMac case just to get the intel macs on the market.

This issue is going to drive my dad to purchase something he doesn't need. He has been stealing my mac for quite some time (older G4 pb) He wants to get a desktop. I told him to get the iMac but he refuses seeing as he comes from the land of the PC he wants a tower he can expand. I told him he'd be just wasting his money getting the MacPro as he'd nvr use it to it's full potential and the 20" iMac with the 128 ATI and 2 Ghz was all he needed. And he could upgrade it to a bigger Videocard and processor if he wanted. A mid-range tower would be prefect in this situation.
Can use some helpful argumental point to help presuade my father not to over spend on a Pro based machine. Thnxs

The Pro machine is a real workstation. It uses special ram and everything. They even sell them with OS X Server. It isn't a consumer machine at all.
Wait for them to upgrade the iMacs before buying anything though.

If he has the money to buy a Mac Pro, what's the harm in letting him go that way? Expensive and way more than he likely needs, but what's the harm? I sure as hell don't need a Mac Pro myself, but I'd buy one if I had the money. Because I can.

The money can be well spent on many other things. Non computer related things aside (porn also), it can be spent on software which he'll want to steal from me (Toast, Audio Hijack Pro, AirFoil) seeing as he uses them frequantly on my borrowed mac. Can also use it to get airport basestation.

The Cube at least had an upgradeable graphics card. I don't want the precise design as some of the design decisions were really stupid. I would just like to see something small and elegant with an expansion slot or two. Something along the lines of the Shuttle small form factor PCs (we have one at home, it works great), but with better aesthetic design.

Re: Official "We Want a Consumer Mac Tower" Thread
Mini is not cube replacement but it might end up like cube. The mistake they made with the cube is they tried to replace the pro desktop with cube. Cube could have had its own niche. Mini can satisfy people who want to try a mac or who needs a second low powered machine. But in no way it can replace a consumer desktop.

Barely upgradable. It was a special graphics card.

Re: Official "We Want a Consumer Mac Tower" Thread
Actually no, it was a standard AGP - just a short card, rather than a longer card. So no top-o'-the-line cards, but several Cube owners have successfully upgraded to better cards over the years. The Shuttle SFF PCs can accommodate full-sized cards, but no dual-slot cards (although two models do support dual-card setups).
My main issue with the Cube was the USB-only audio, that was retarded. Not to mention the difficulty accessing ports on the bottom of the machine (and the corresponding cable clutter).

People always complain about lack of upgradeability, but how often do you guys actually do it? My three year old G5 tower has gotten a few RAM upgrades, and a new harddrive - both of which can be done on an iMac…
