For a minute there, I thought you were referring to his... nevermind...

Re: Pope Benedict sets himself apart from his predecessor

At risk of losing the papal-dress contract are the Annibale Gammarelli tailors, who have made papal wear since 1792. But they blundered when Benedict had to make his debut blessing in a cassock that was too short, ending just above his ankles.

HATE to be the guy who lost that contract.

Yeah, almost as bad as losing the Wonderbread account.

Re: Pope Benedict sets himself apart from his predecessor

I also recall reading some fashion article about how there's practically a gay cabal (thankfully no jews finally!) that run the procurement of this stuff for the Pope, and then there's the speculation about the Pope's personal secretary, Georg Ganswein... just do a goole-image search.  The Italians call him "Beautiful George" and was Donatella Versace's inspiration for part of her last collection.

Re: Pope Benedict sets himself apart from his predecessor

Not to derail this thread from its wonderful discussion of papal fashion and gay tailors, but here's the quote I was looking for from the last pope on the subject:

"The Church's quarrel with many scientists who call themselves evolutionists is not about evolution itself... but rather about the philosophical materialism that is at the root of so much evolutionary thinking. "

Re: Pope Benedict sets himself apart from his predecessor

So, according to him the problem is that evolutionary science ignores the supernatural?

Of course it does, material is all we've got.

Oh, and you've just gotta love the "evolutionists" label. Wonder how you say that in Polish?

No, according to him the problem is that many use the science of evolution and natural selection to argue that humans are nothing more than another animal, that there is no soul - philosophical materialism does not ignore the supernatural, it denies the supernatural.

There is no problem with pursuing natural science as long as that pursuit does not have as a goal the denial of the supernatural.

Humans ARE just animals - evolution and biology shows we share a common ancestry and physical characteristics with other primates. There's no physical evidence for a "soul" and it's existence is highly unlikely. If it did exist, monkeys would have one, too.

However, Paul could have rested easy on one point: science does not seek to "deny" the supernatural. Science is simply not concerned with it.

It seems to me that this is the old erroneous equating evolutionary theory with Social Darwinism (which has nothing to do with Darwin excepting misinterpreting "survival of the fittest" as meaning "survival of the strongest").

No, it's a rebuttal to exactly what user is promoting: the idea that evolutionary theory is more than a scientific theory of how organic life in its present state came to be, but can be used to prove atheism/materialism.  user actually demonstrated what the Church is objecting to quite well in the last two posts. A conflation of the science of evolution (accepted by Church) and the philosophy of materialism (obviously not accepted).
