Re: New Mac Ad - Stuffed
Not a good ad, although the absence of annoying trialware is a pretty good selling point.
PC makers cram all sorts of software that pops up on your first run, slows down your computer, and is hard to uninstall. On a Mac the few pieces of trial software don't load unless you actually choose to open them, and uninstalling them just takes a click and drag to the trash.
The problem is that a lot of people will interpret this ad as saying there's no software available for Macs except iLife.

Re: New Mac Ad - Stuffed
A lot? My Dad's PC came with a 120 GB HD and had 9 GB left at the time of purchase. The software had no install disks so I spent three days deleting over a thousand titles from the control panel so the few titles he did want to keep weren't lost (and they were only trial versions, anyway). I didn't even bother with the fragments left over. It seriously needs to just be reformatted. Of course, then, he'd only have XP left and a very expensive game of solitaire.

Who did you buy you computer from ? was it new ? what Make and model ? I bought a few PC's and aside from about 10 or so trial software it was pretty empty, I would love to know, BTW it is not hard to remove the trial software did mine in under 15 minates with 2 restarts... Add/Remove control panel works wonders.

iWork - should just be permanent version (like AppleWorks was on many macs) but pay full for upgrade to next version.
Office 2004 is not necessary. You know you need it or you don't need it.
I can't speak to the others.
Would be nice if iMac came with Phostoshop Light (LE or whatever they call it - trial or full). Also would be nice if iMac came with a gift certificate for free iTMS tunes (IE $25 worth) and QuickTime Pro (does it?? My Beige G3 did - but I had to enter a code)

I think its a bit hypocritical and untrue. I just bought a new Mac and it came with a lot of demo software and trials, including Office and iWork.
Those are hard to remove, too - with having to drag them to the trash and all...
Of course, the windows demo bundles may be just as easy to remove, I don't know - it's been a long time since I set up a new windows machine, but the last time I did it (9 years ago) I remember it being a pain then.

Ummm, try opening a PowerPoint doc the the 1st time, and what opens, the Keynote demo! In fact, for PowerPoint to open the doc in this situation, you need to choose it under "File/Open File", which most people new to the Mac would not know.

Double-clicking on a file associated with a program counts as choosing to open that program.
I'm referring to the practice of some PC manufacturers of trial versions of software loading up on startup and hogging system resources.

Re: New Mac Ad - Stuffed
You can argue this all kind of ways. A lot of the trial ware is the decision of the PC vendor, not MS, and their market is huge, so the temptation is also.
But what I see here (and elsewhere) is at least a debate about the effectiveness and image of the new ads. I was just in the throes of converting when these came out, and they gave me pause... did I really want to be associated with the image of smugness associated with the ads.
Then I saw a debate similar to this one in a UK forum, and was encouraged.
Personally, I think the ads are a mistake, but now i don't care, because I have discoved that the mac people, like on this forum, are not like in the ads.
As to what I miss when going back to windows (on a good 2 processor HP workstation), is the seemingly effortless way OS X can allow an almost unlimited number of spps open at the same time without slowing down or getting crossed up. And of course, the difficulty of ininstalling on windows is well known.
And there are some windows things I miss as well. But nothing thatis a deal killer yet. Maybe a new thread on that subject.

Re: New Mac Ad - Stuffed
I find a lot of what the ads imply is backwards. For me the PC is a toy, in the sense it is only used for trivial, unimportant things. About 90% of uptime is spent in VCR duty. Most of the rest is spent downloading and installing security updates, doing anti-virus/anti-spyware scans and defragging. If I want to do anything productive I use my Mac.

Re: New Mac Ad - Stuffed
I have ran my PC for years without virus scanning software and only 1 time have I ever got a virus. The virus I got was somewhat of a fluke too. I had given my router to a friend and then ordered me a new one. I got hit with the virus that would just scan IP's and if you didn't have a firewall you would get infected. That being said....if you know what you are doing PCs are just fine. The problem is 90% of the world doesn't know what they are doing.
I find it funny that when I try to get someone to switch over to a mac they always tell me that they don't know how to use a mac so they will just buy what they are used to. My response to them is that they dont' know how to use a PC either so getting a mac shouldn't be any different.

Can I be smug that I've used a Mac, practically since they came out? Or can I be smug that I know that computing doesn't have to be difficult?
Oh well, on to the next problem.

You had to delete over 1000 pre-installed software titles? I call Bull smurf.

You obviously never dealt with a Crapaq. While I doubt the exact figure was over 1000, there was so much useless garbage on sis's system that it certainly seems a believable example figure.

I would believe 20 titles. I have set up more than a few cheap systems of the sort that come full of crap and while it's bad it's nothing like 1000.
Saying that sort of thing is why so many Windows users think Mac people are idiots.

lol indeed.
I've seen my share of trial ware and I'll agree that its not so much installed trial software that bugs me, its mostly the ones that add a system tray icon with a running process in the background that drive me crazy.
The machines that ship with Norton Internet Security suite are likely to be as slow as slugs no matter what processor/RAM combo they have. You can't give that POS enough resources to be happy.

Re: New Mac Ad - Stuffed
Yeah, my HP shipped with 1.5 metric buttloads of crap. Even so I only deleted about 50 items, a lot of it drivers and support stuff for HP cameras and printers and so forth. The single biggest space saver was the trial version of MS Office and that was approximately 4 GB. I forget the total amount of disk space I cleared but it was less than 10 GB.
I concur re Norton. I saw orders of magnitude improvements in speed and responsiveness when I dumped it. I tried a newer version and it was even worse. It actually taunted me with boastful messages about how it was taking extra time to slow down my system and please wait while it slowed things down a little more.
