drive imaging

Hi,

Just got a new macbook, is there any software that will me make an image of the drive and recover from a bootable CD/DVD..

On my PC's I use Acronis True Image, to store images on my NAS. I can recover my PC's via a bootable CD across the network.. I would like to do this with my macbook just in case the worst happens.. Makes recovering a snap and with Windows XP well I've recovered a few times.. smile

The only utility I have ever used is Carbon Copy Cloner on my PowerMac G5, but that was just to clone to a newer drive, not make an image..

Thanks..

Re: drive imaging

why wouldn't CCC work for you? You can image with Disk Utility and even use it to restore.

Re: drive imaging

I've only used CCC a couple times but never to make say just an image file, I used it to clone to a new drive.. I have not used disk utility for imaging only to format.. I just never used it for much else, never had the need to yet..

I would restore the image from say the 1st OSX install CD???? But would I have network support?? Could I stick the image on my NAS and get to it from disk utility??

I went from a powermac g4 to a powermac g5 an honestly it just keeps going and going, never had a major melt down yet.. (knock on wood) smile

Thanks..

Re: drive imaging

I'm curious. Couldn't one use Disk Utility to make a Restore to a separate, say, FW disk, and then make an image of that data?

Re: drive imaging

I see what you're saying of making a 2nd disk and then imaging that.. Shoot that across the network for safe keeping.. But can it be restored from disk utility off of the first OS X CD.. or does the whole OS need to be re-installed then the image written after that???

Re: drive imaging

The image made by Disk Utility should work as a complete re-installation of your disk. And be bootable.

If that isn't correct I do expect someone else will post a correction.

Re: drive imaging

Cool I will be trying that out here on the macbook and we'll see how it goes.. smile

If and when I decide to try bootcamp, will disk utility image that partition alongside the OSX partition or would I have to utilize another solution.. ??? Eventually I would like to try bootcamp out and if I could include a complete backup image of everything that would be really cool..

Thanks..

Re: drive imaging

I believe that Disk Utility will make an image of it.
