Thinking of switching from Windows to OSX
Hello All,
I am new to this forum as of today.
After following the problems Vista is causing (& will probably continue to cause) I am seriously thinking of switching to a Mac.
I am a web developer & I primarily use the following programs: Adobe Dreamweaver, Fireworks, PhotoShop & Acrobat.
I have lots of questions & was wondering if this is the right forum to post basic questions. If there might be a better sub forum please let me know.
Thanks.

Re: Thinking of switching from Windows to OSX
SWITCH!
Switching to a Mac was the best decision I ever made. You will see the difference your first day messing around on it. First of all, unless you get a new PC, you are going to have issues with Vista. They are trying to build a Mac like system not on Unix. Did you look at the Microsoft site where it talks about Vista, all they talk about are music, photos, videos, and stuff like that, hmmm sounds like they are trying to be more like a Mac to me. My boyfriend works for a huge credit union in their IT department. He does crazy security stuff and works with major SQL stuff. They aren't even updating to Vista, at least not anytime soon. I absolutely will never go back to a PC. Matt is trying to save for a Mac now, he has always wanted one and I feel kind of bad that I got one first, but every night when he has to reboot and I am still going strong, we both laugh! No regrets switching to Mac. Matt also does web stuff on the side and he uses my Mac for it a lot. I don't know how many detailed questions about some of your programs I will be able to answer about web design, but I will tell you right now, I use mine for a lot of stuff and even if I was only using it for surfing the net and email like some people, I would still get a Mac. Hope this helps!

It can be as far as I'm concerned but other mods may or may not have over ideas. They'll probably only move it and leave a redirect, if they do. Please feel free to continue using this topic for as long as you're continuing to have thoughts on the subject and it's been under a couple months since you last posted in it.
Anticipating a bit, you'll be happy to know that we have all those apps on our platform (though Dreamweaver didn't make it in either platform's version of Creative Suite 3), unfortunately I regret to inform you Adobe doesn't seem to offer crossgrade pricing.

WHAT??
I always thought they functioned a damned sight better?

It did on the Web Premium and Web Standard versions.
Anyways, welcome, Soloran. You won't regret switching.

Picky picky picky. I will categorically state, that the interface is system interface is cleaner and easier to use.
And using Applescript or Automator you can easily automate some repetive, cross-functional, cross-application activities to save you time and effort. And you don't have to be a real expert in programming.

:Goes to try and figure out if I just missed it or confused it with something else.:
P.S. Seems I completely missed a whole section of the product comparison chart.
Again my bad.

Re: Thinking of switching from Windows to OSX
I knew that Adobe has DW, FW, PS & Acrobat on the Mac. In fact I was told that they have a very cost effective program if someone wants to switch platforms and that is what caused me to think aout switching. The full retail cost of those programs would have killed me if they didn't have a good migration program.
I need to sit down & outline the apps I use a lot & see if there are equivalents on the Mac side (& I am sure there will be).
Anyone here using MS Outlook for their contacts/calendar? I use it a lot & want to be sure that the Mac version will synch with my Treo 650 (Palm OS).
Can someone suggest a Mac configuration I should be thinking about?
Here is what I am running right now:
Dell Dimension XPS
~ 1.8 Gig Intel processor
1 GB Ram
120GB hard drive
21" Trinitron monitor
Thanks for the replies.

Re: Thinking of switching from Windows to OSX
You should probably find out if the Treo has Apple support because I have no idea. As far as the system, get a 20" or 24" iMac and that would be more than compatible with your current system while bringing you up to date with your processor speed and new technologies. Let us know what you decide!

One important thing: If you find something hard, you aren't doing it the easiest way.
(e.g.: navigating through the finder for a pic in iPhoto VS dragging the pic from iPhoto to where you want it).

Re: Thinking of switching from Windows to OSX
In the iMac category, the 24" is affordable. A factory refurbished model is available for $ 1700 in the Special Deals section of the Apple Store online. http://www.apple.com/imac/
If you want to spend more, for about 30-50 % more speed on average (depending on the task, it can be even faster), the Mac Pro with a 23" Cinema Display is the value play.

...and 2GB RAM is well worth the small price. Make sure you compare apple's price vs others. RAM is RAM.
I used Entourage in place of Outlook but have recently ditched em all for Google Apps. Alls I need is email and calendars. I have no idea about syncing.

Re: Thinking of switching from Windows to OSX
Another for makin the switch!!! I came over a little over a year and a half ago and love it. Started used and then upgraded to an intelmac. I would lend a vote for a refurbished Mac Pro. As a professional I think you will benefit from the speed, expandibility and such. Also you have that 21" trinitron to hook up to it so you dont have to have a cinema. The 2.33 or 2.0 ghz would easily stay up to speed for a long time to come IMO. -Chris aka "speedy"

Well, if Microsoft is trying to build a cheap imitation, you might as well go with the original!

Re: Thinking of switching from Windows to OSX
After I switched to Mac at work, I did kind of miss waiting a week or more for IT to get around to my HP/Compaq/Dell/Micron to straighten out whatever the latest problem was, or if the PC were more than two years old, just junk it for a new one.
No more goofing off around other people's desks, no more one hour coffee breaks with two hour lunches. OTOH, working became a pleasure. Just not having to fight the windows file manager was a time saver.
I always felt that Macromedia's programs seemed snappier on windows. The rumor I heard was that MM simply paid some hacks in India to recompile the PC versions for Mac, with a resultant lackluster finish. Text shortcut keys were windows equivalents, not the familiar Mac ones, lots of little things like that. Anyway, Adobe won't pull that kind of crap, so good riddance to MM, AFAIC.

Re: Thinking of switching from Windows to OSX
I have an appointment set up next week at the one Apple Store in Phoenix.
I m making a chart of all the misc. hardware/software things I use on the PC.
Want to see what Mac equivalent there might be.
Kind of amazing how many different things you use during the work day.

Has anyone got the definitive answer for this? Apart from helping out here I'd like to know. I had a sniff around Adobe's site but found nothing.

Re: Thinking of switching from Windows to OSX
Back in the Photoshop 5.5 days, I switched our office to Mac and got Adobe to cross-grade our existing Windows licenses for a small fee, as well as the upgrade price to the latest version.
The guy on the phone at Adobe, remember this was in 5.5 days, tried to talk me out of it and stay on the PC! It was an amusing debate; the best the guy could come up with was the large amount of IE windows he could open at once in NT/98.
He was as lame as it was funny and sad. I asked him why I would want to open 50 IE pages; little did I know that malware writers would later take his promotion to heart. I've seen infected PCs with way more than 50 unrequested IE pages open in XP, that's for sure.
