You know how Safari will complete URLs for you, and suggest others?..

How does one make that stop, or at least clear them?  I don't even know what the feature is called.  Clearing the cache doesn't seem to help.  Disabling the cache doesn't either.  It doesn't help to reset Safari or douse my cookies in napalm.

Thanks in advance.

It's stuff in your history or bookmarks.

Pottymouth is correct.

I know Saft can disable location autocomplete, however it is shareware.

Yes, Safari helps me autocomplete malformed URL typos, and previously visited sections of sites I don't wish to visit. I've just gotten used to placing my cursor into the parts of the URLs I wish to delete.

I see nothing in Preferences to shut autocomplete off. Maybe Private Browsing would to the trick, but I rely on my cookies for lots of stuff.

I get this sometimes. I was led to believe it has something to do with cookies. But as I have so many (and the consequences of trashing them all) I never looked into it any further.

Re: You know how Safari will complete URLs for you, and suggest others?..

The answer given above is quite correct.  In recent days I've had a need to get on my school's registrar page, which I just type the URL to, but nearly every time I've forgotten that it would autocomplete the URL and take me to the school's extranet link, which is of little use to me at this point.  It was infuriating!

Thanks for providing the solution.  I found the little-used extranet link and deleted it.  Now all is well again.

Normally that would fix itself automatically as the history expires...unless you keep going there accidentally. wink

It is actually the bookmarks that do it. I just found the one that was giving me problems. It had a very similar name to a regular site I use now.

I think it was a throwback to when I used Internet Exploder and imported all the bookmarks to Safari (via Omniweb, via... ) en masse. It was in a nested folder called "Cool Stuff". I'll be the judge of what's cool or not, thank you very much, Mr Gates!

M$ strikes again.

No, I had a bookmark for the little-used extranet site (I neglected to say so previously--my apologies), from my days as a first- or second-year law student, when I actually cared about what my fellow students thought or did.  I'm well past that now (I no longer look at them as sources of assistance, but as potential future adversaries [hey, it's an adversarial business!]).  But that bookmark was what it decided to take me to when I was, as I often am, typing without looking at what I'm typing (I'm a touch typist, sue me).  And I would be confronted with a site to which I had not intended to go.  All is now solved.  And thank you for your assistance.

I've had extra need to go to the registrar's site recently, what with graduation applications, writing requirement forms, bar exam registration, etc.  So it's really come to a head in the past month or so.  Infuriatingly so.  And now I have solved the problem.

If you're annoyed by small things like that buy omniweb. It has anal features for everything.

I have no desire to have anything resembling the Internet anywhere close to that aperture.  What you do in your own time is your business, though.  wink

They should quote me in their user recommendation page.
