Stupid unclosable flash advertisements

Oooh....anger. I just want to read some movie news, and what does BoxOfficeMojo do to me? This crap.

If you really have to have flash based advertising, fine. But it sure as hell better be closable. I mean, I had to wait ten seconds to read the opening paragraph.

I'm going to go kick a squirrel in the nads.

Re: Stupid unclosable flash advertisements

Flash ads should be banned by any halfway respectable site.  They're extremely tacky and annoying.

Sadly, it looks like the MAF have started to run some here. Yarg.

Anyhoo, slightly off topic but can't you just disable Flash or is the whole page/site a Flash abomination? If so, feel free to export your vermin sterilisation program to my neighbourhood.

I'm starting to include "no Flash ads like that" as a criteria for "halfway respectable site."

whoa, where'd that come from? sneaky

but yeah, flash ads like that are REALLY obnoxious. They used to have one (maybe they still do) on IMDB that would keep you from getting to the search box. I mean, wtf? That's kind of an important part of the site. Not to mention, flash of any kind tends to bring Camino to its knees.

Is that actually a flash layer? It could very well be a 24 bit image with some CSS and JS.

There's more then one tool that can be used to annoy a reader.

If you ever go back to that site you prove their strategy is the correct one.

You don't prove that the strategy is the correct one.  You simply prove that the viewers are willing to put up with that kind of in your face advertsising to get to the content, correct or not.

Their strategy is to be as annoying as possible, knowing that most web users are too apathetic to bother finding a new source of info. They have cleverly figured out the annoyance threshold— how annoying something needs to be in order to drive users away en masse. To come back after this annoying ad would be playing right into their hands and proving them right.

Yep, people need to take a hard core attitude. If I hit a site that employs tactics like that I make a point of NEVER going back.
There are a couple of Mac related sites I used to visit that I havent looked at in a couple of years because they started using the flash popup exploit.
I dont know if they are still doing it or not and I dont care. All it takes with me is one single bad experience and I will never go back to a site, ever.
Thats the only way.

someone needs to start an organization that'll actively arrange boycotts of those sites and provide frendlier alternatives.

I hate ads like that.  And the new ads that get past Safari's pop-up blocker.

Nice desktop pic though wink
