Re: September, September, September!

Also don't forget that during Ike's career as a military officer, the military did not have the right to vote.

How can I forget something I never knew? When did that happen? And when reversed? I'd bet Ike got it changed. Just a guess.

hmm...

(Guess MacArthur was stepping too close to that line then?)

Re: September, September, September!

It was reversed in the 50's-60's. I know that up through WWII soldiers etc. were not allowed to vote. Part of separating the military from politics.

And MacArthur could run for president if he wanted to. He could vote for himself, and would have to resign his commission if elected.

Re: September, September, September!

Yes. All well and good.
A random maistream site on the constitution:

to millions of us, MacArthur’s a hero. Last year, when Communist troops overran most of South Korea, his bold tactics helped us push them back nearly all the way to China.

But MacArthur didn’t stop there. He sought war with China, and criticized Truman for seeking a cease-fire.

Active-duty and political speech don't mix, from what I hear.

Which is why he was relieved from command.

Re: September, September, September!

That's what I thought.

Still fading away, too. (Even I know a little about the 'firing' and I wasn't even aroud till just before Ike won a second WH term.)

Re: September, September, September!

Yeah, he wanted WWIII, that MacArthur did. He enjoyed a brief period of lionization after being relieved, but when it came to politics he was a bumbling dolt so the bloom rapidly faded off that particular rose (thank God).
