Connecting OS9 to the internet tomorrow.

And I'm wondering:
What are the best utilities/programs (preferably free, but not vapour) to use on it, and is there Bonjour for Classic so I can connect my laserprinter to it?

I really hate coincidences. My neighbour had a garage-sale, and that's where I got it from. I walked down there right after checking this post.

Here is a web page where you can download the last Mac version of WordPerfect (and some updates) for free.

Thanks! and I now have AV: http://www.defyne.org/agax/
Now I need to figure out how to share the printer which is connected to my CD iMac, and some other apps.

Re: Connecting OS9 to the internet tomorrow.

Well, you can share the printer a number of ways, but there is no Rendezvous or Bonjour networking built into OS 9.

iCab would probably be an okay browser.

You don't need antivirus software.

Yeah, I was just gonna say, are there even any viruses for OS 9?

edit: just noticed there are three known baddies on that Agax site

Can you explain the easiest rout?

I'm using IE.

You sure? It's not OS X

Re: Connecting OS9 to the internet tomorrow.

Easiest route for printer? Set up printer sharing via TCP/IP. Use Laserwriter Driver to connect over TCP/IP.

IE works too.

Sure about not needing AV software? Yeah. You don't.

Re: Connecting OS9 to the internet tomorrow.

Under no circumstances install any anti-virus software. There are no viruses to get and there is no AV for OS9 that wont plague you with problems and instability.
Seriously, dont do it.

Why? There are three. It's freeware and I can't figure out how to get it to run in the background so I don't run it.

Re: Connecting OS9 to the internet tomorrow.

There might've been three, but I don't know of anyone who actually got a virus when OS 9 was in its prime.  Today, OS 9 is dead and I'm sure those viruses must've died with it.

If it gives you peace of mind, you can run it every now and then, but you really don't need it.

I'll just use it the same way as with ClamXav; on my HD, but never used.

OK, if it makes ya feel any better. As long as you dont have any active background scanning or AV related extensions or control panels.

Re: Connecting OS9 to the internet tomorrow.

Agax has an "active" scanning extension. make sure it's disabled. They cause more trouble than they solve.

I am going to remove or disable most of the extensions because it takes FOREVER for the iMac to load, and that AV doesn't prevent infecting Windows computers, so it's going, too.

Turn off extensions in small groups so you can determine when you turn one off you actually need. You can turn off the majority of extensions in a standard OS9 install but there are a a bunch that are mandatory.

Re: Connecting OS9 to the internet tomorrow.

G3 iMacs shipped with really slow hard drives.  If you can find a cheap semi-modern replacement, it should speed things up.

Also, there's a couple of third-party apps available to speed startup times.  I think one works by loading a 'proper' HD driver early in the boot sequence, and the other one works by caching extensions and control panels for faster loading.  Anyway, you can use both in tandem for even faster startups.  The first one was called Startup Doubler; I forget what the other one's called.

I actually saw a Mac virus in the wild once, circa 1998.  INIT-something or other?  Disinfectant took care of it.

Forget the third party stuff, just trim the extensions and CPs down to a bare minimum and your Mac will be as fast as it's gonna get.

Re: Connecting OS9 to the internet tomorrow.

It sped up the iMac by 50%!
Next time I will disable more ones that I had verified as unimportant, though wasn't as obvious.

Thats the way . Just be sure to keep track of what you turned off so you can restore what you need.
Another benefit of a well trimmed system is it will be stable and use much less ram.

So true, last time I updated the "virus definitions" for Virex 6 my computer crashed. Don't even try.
