Upgrading Biege G3 from OS 9 to 10.1
Hello,
My overall goal is to get my wife's PC notebook to "see" the files/HD on my G3 All computers connect to one router. G3-Wired and PC-Wireless. Everything I have read talks about connecting to OSX. So when I try to upgrade to 10.1, the destination disk "is dimmed because it is not within the first 8GB". I have erased the HD and there is less that 1GB used. What's the reason? My biege G3 will pretty much act like a server. But I didn't want to fork out any extra money for that kind of software. Does anyone have a better idea? Know where I can get some freeware? Why can't I upgrade?
Thank you kindly,
kgrulke

Beige G3s are.... stupid.
Partition your HD as follows. Partition 1: 7.5 GBs. Partition 2: The Rest.
Now install OS X on partition 1.
Voila.

You can upgrade that Beige G3 to OS X 10.3 Panther by using XPostFacto--otherwise you'll be limited to 10.2 Jaguar. XPostFacto is freeware unless you want to be able to post to the XPostFacto tech forum (you can read entries there without registration).

personally, as the owner of a beige, they are best used for OS 9.x for classic operations.
upkeeping is a PIA and you are best served by updating to at least some semblance of a G4.
just my opine.

You are going to want to have 512 meg od ram in that G3 for any flavour of OSX.
I’m not ready to make nice-I’m not ready to back down-I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round-It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could-‘Cause I’m mad as hell-Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I'd say just give up and max it to 768. Might as well go for the gold.
10.2 will work a lot better than 10.1, if you have it, btw.
