Re: powermacintosh 6360/6400
136MB RAM, PCI video card. 128(?)GB hard drive. You might find a CPU upgrade (G3/G4) for it. In other words, not worth it unless you can scavenge the parts. It won't run anything current and getting it to the point where it can be "useful" will cost more than something current. so...

Re: powermacintosh 6360/6400
:lol:Well I still have my 6400 running in another room so I can play some of my old games that intel dual core iMac won't play or run. Maxed out with a G3 Sonnet. Other than that, not much useful life left for the old gal.

Re: powermacintosh 6360/6400
Your intel mac could probably just run os 9 under emulation to play those games.

Re: powermacintosh 6360/6400
You'd be surprised how many older Mac games just don't run well via emulation. I've got a box full of old pre OS9 games where its best for me to have a old Beige beauty to run just for the best experience.

Re: powermacintosh 6360/6400
It's always more fun when games are played on the system they are designed for. Case in point - I can emulate Super Nintendo all day long, but Final Fantasy just isn't the same unless it's on the real thing.

Re: powermacintosh 6360/6400
Yeah, part of the retro joy is the old hardware and OS. I really get a grey beard kick out of playing old games on my Powerbook 530c.
It's just more fun.
I’m not ready to make nice-I’m not ready to back down-I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round-It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could-‘Cause I’m mad as hell-Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

Re: powermacintosh 6360/6400
The SOnnet Crescendo PCI CPU udgrade will get the speed up to 500Mhz, however the maximum RAM ceiling is effectively 128Mb of 136-pin non-EDO SO-DIMM... this type of RAM is still available, and can be bought now in modules as large as 128MB however this has never been officially tested or supported by Apple, and it's bloody expensive stuff anyway for how little you will get out of it... In other words you might push 256Mb but it is hardly worth it unless you are just doing it to prove a point.

Max HDD capacity that is supported by the onboard IDE is I believe 136GB.
Even if you do jack up the RAM, put in a fat hard drive and open up the speed to 500mhz, do not think for a second that the machine will perform as well as a later Mac of similar specifications, as the bus speed is still only 33mhz... about half of the speed of even the earliest G3-based Powermacs and iMacs... hence the machine will still be very limited. added to this that the CPU upgrade card will eat your only PCI slot, you'll still be stuck with the very ordinary factory 1Mb graphics.
IN short... I reckon you're best enjoying it for what it is and if you need a bit more guts, pick up a cheap G3 iMac off eBay.

B+W G3, 450mhz, 512mb, 2x 40Gb, DVD+/-RW, X.3.6.
Powerbook G3, 400mhz, 384mb, 40Gb, DVD-ROM, Firewire, X.3.6.
Franken-iMac G3 Blueberry, 400mhz, 64mb, 10Gb, CD-ROM, 9.2.2... SOON TO BE SOUPED UP AND RUNNING TIGER!

Re: powermacintosh 6360/6400
The 6360/6400/6500 Macs specify 5v 168pin EDO DIMMs, not SO-DIMMs which is laptop RAM. But I have used FPM (non-EDO) in several of these Macs with no problems and they are a little cheaper than the EDO DIMMs.
Two 64MB sticks are maximum, it cannot read 128MB sticks of RAM.
And with the RAM maxed and a G3 card (not PCI model G3 card, but a cache slot G3 card) it will run OS 8-9 pretty well and add an 8 or 16MB video card and you can play some older games fairly well. These are actually pretty cool old Macs and have lots of features like A/V editing and an even add-on TV tuner.
Note: The PCI Sonnet G3 upgrades are for PCI Macs (7300-9600) and fit in the daughtercard CPU slot, not n a PCI slot. There are no CPU's that fit in a PCI slot escept for the old DOS cards by Apple and the OrangePC cards that had old Pentium CPUs on the PCI card.
It's a noce toy to keep around to play with but not much good for internet. There are no good browsers anymore for pre-OS X Macs.
