New Mac|Life Forum for MacLife.com article discussions
I'd like to add a new Forum to the Mac|Life category for the announcement of and discussion about MacLife.com articles. Does anyone see a problem with this idea? I'll moderate it myself unless someone else wants to take it over.
We'd add a new topic each time a new story was posted; the topic title would be the name of the story, and the body of the initial posting would be that article's "teaser."
Thoughts?

Ok, it's marketing the web site, and encouraging discussion on web site content.
Makes sense to separate the two, but i wonder about saturation on the forum.

A good bold title such as Editor's Announcement might suffice.

Which might be a bit misleading. A good leader is a must though.

Sounds good. Actually I recently started checking the main page again and have found some nice articles at times. Although a lot of it quickly gets posted in stuff like Circuit Board/etc, I wouldn't mind trying out this approach. Might clean up some of the clutter elsewhere.

It seems kind of redundant, what with there already being a comment feature on the articles...

Why? Why not have one place for the discussion of all articles, online or in print? Instead of creating a new thread for every article that's published, which could lead to a forum full of empty threads, you might consider just having posting guidelines for that particular forum that are more rigourous than for others. In the latter case, you'd just edit threads that don't have the story name as their subject.
B) I want to have a place in the Forums that exposes Forum folks to what's new on the home page of the site.
1 and B. Heh. Anyway, yeah, I think that's a great idea. I visit the forums frequently, but rarely visit the site itself. It's not that I don't want to, I'm just short on time, so I just sub to the feeds and forget about it. I'd really benefit from reading forum posts that direct me to particular site content and give me the opportunity for me to provide feedback on it.

Indeed. Get some stuff working first and you can add anything you like without any real issue.

I like the idea of an articles forum; I stopped going to the main page several years ago when it wasn't being updated very often, and now only go there accidently when I hit the "home" link. If there was an interesting article posted here to link to, I might be inclined to go there and browse around.
My first thought when I read the the title though, was fix some issues like titles showing up in tabs. I open my email alerts in multiples, and I hate getting dropped into the middle of a thread and having to scroll up or down to find the thread title so I know which one I'm in. All of the other boards I frequent are run by volunteers with varying degrees of expertise, but none of them are beleaguered by this issue.

Research consistently shows that mag readers and site visitors are two different groups. Yeah, there's some overlap, but one heck of a lot less than you might imagine.
Good warning about the danger of a "Land of Empty Threads," though -- let me talk to some of the folks at our other properties, and see what their experiences have been.

Just an FYI: I can add forums and threads, but I can't bug-fix when it comes to the Forum architecture's soft underbelly -- I'm afraid that's locked up tight in the bowels of our Internet Operations group, and I'm having a helluva time trying to pry them free to work on anything. That said, a nice, succinct, prioritized list of megabugs would be v.helpful.

You're kidding, right?
For starters, all the tabs have exactly the same title. If you have 6 forums open, they all say MacLife on the tab. mtpalms also made a comment about it in this thread. I know you're awate of the other thread that deals with issues, so i can't understand your confusion on this.

And now i see your other post. Still, the other stuff should be priority, no matter who does the fixing.
If you want to create another forum, you're the boss. It doesn't really matter to me. Liker i said, i'd just like other things taken care of first.

Just to let you know: I reported that bug, oh, back during the Korean War, and still haven't been able to shake the Internet Ops guys hard enough to get it fixed. I'll keep trying -- thanks for relighting that lucifer in my toe shoes.
