Popular CCM

Since my iPod broke - I've been going through some CDs I haven't ripped yet in my DVD player.

"Best of" YYYY christian rock. I bought them to sample what modern CCM bands are like because I have sort been out of the loop in that genre.

This is really sad - but you wouldn't know there were a dozen different bands on the CD. They all sound exactly the same - every single one of them.

And it seems a lot of the lyrics are really shallow - and pathetic - IE some crap about moving to california where you won't be bored because you can hop on a board. I might have thought that was clever when I was 8.

I hate to rant on it - there are some good bands in CCM (I like David Crowder band for example - and Delerious) - but I don't know, I thought that maybe CCM was starting to gain popularity because they were starting to put out some good music, and that just isn't the case.

If they really are the best, then CCM is really in a sad state.

At least they could attempt to sound different from each other.

"Let's go eat ice cream" in a Metallica or SFU riff.  It ain't gonna happen.  Besides, everybody knows you have to sell your soul to the devil to play good rock.

Hmmm, good to know that I'm not missing anything.

You could try some Neal Morse, though.  He's the ex lead singer from Spock's Beard ( a popular prog rock band), and converted to Christianity a few years ago.  He puts out some pretty good prog rock with subtle and not-so-subtle Christian overtones.  It'll certainly be different than what you've got on that sampler CD.

Re: Popular CCM

There have been some good CCM bands but for the most part the genre has always been a sort of sheltered workshop for not particularly talented artists..

Re: Popular CCM

Res, check the WOW series of albums. I like the WOW Hits double CD albums, they put a new one out every year with a bunch of the newest top hits of that year. I hear the CCM CD's can be a hit or a miss, which is sad because they are supposed to be so big in the industry.

I think you are right about some of the bigger groups sounding a lot like each other, but it certainly isn't any worse than in any other genre. How much of the stuff on the Top 40 Pop charts, or most mainstream radio stations is formulaic, bubble gum pop/r&b/rap/metal? Each genre has it's own version.

Pariah, while that probably was the case years ago, I certainly don't see it now. There has been a huge upswing in Christian Rock/Pop over the last 10 years or so. There are so many really good groups out there now, I have to think the not-so-talented groups will get weeded out. Yes, there still is some of the same formulaic, bubble gum pop sound. 13 year old girls still need something to listen to smile

Like with any genre, the real gems aren't the immediately obvious ones.

That's true. I listen to Christian Rock, but rarely anything from those crap "best of whatever year" cds. Beside's, if it's a best of Christian Rock cd, why is Delerious and David Crowder on there.

I don't see them as being rock at all. More like hyped up praise and worship.

Re: Popular CCM

There's quite a bit of quality rock that isn't about sex and drugs.
U2 and Rush for example have many quality classics that do not have either.

However, there are plenty of secular bands that rely on sex and drugs - and they are just as pathetic as the ccm artists that rely on the hallelujah and praise jesus in every chorus line.

Re: Popular CCM

Personally, I like music that doesn't depend on sex and drugs. I've had it up to here with fricken love-songs!

However, my reference to sex, drugs and rock'n'roll was a joke. It's always been a joke since the 60s - one that the really straight folks never get.
