Recording into GarageBand
Hello,
I have been reading about recording instruments into GarageBand. I have not tried it, but I am trying to find what I need to input the sound. I have a drum kit I would like to record into garageband. What would be a good product for this.. Some say a USB condenser mic would work or products from M-Audio. i don't need anything elaborate or very expensive.
I figured that if I really like recording, I could get a drum mic kit and feed those into a mixer then stereo out into whatever would hook into my mac to record the kit. But for now I am just looking for something that is fairly simple that would sound OK..
Thanks..

if your dead set on going cheap for now ... For your price range (around 100$) and what you are recording (drums) I would say go for the "snow ball" by blue or the MXL USB.006 by marshall...
There was a cover story about usb mics in the april 07 issue of electronic musician...
If you don't mind spending more
I have the m-audio 410 and a AKG perception 200 mic... great quality and features for what i needed.

Re: Recording into GarageBand
Even if you're going for a budget system, it'd behoove you to get an audio interface like the M-Audio FireWire 410 (which I recommend myself). As for a microphone, get two so you can mic your set in stereo. With this setup, you can also plug in instrument and line-level sources, and the mikes can later be used in a mixer--something you mentioned purchasing in the future. USB mikes are inexpensive and convenient, but they're very limiting.

I do not like the 410. First off - false advertising. They claim 4 simultaneous inputs, and show 2 mic and 2 line inputs. However, the 2 Mic/Line inputs are SWITCHED, so you only have a maximum of 2 inputs at once.
The other 2 they refer to are the SPDIF inputs. Right. Thanks. So very useful.
I sold mine shortly after I got it. Also, do not get the M-Audio Audiophile. The drivers for that POS are the worst I have ever experienced.

This certainly is annoying, though M-Audio isn't the only one who markets stuff this way. Behringer is another company that comes to mind. Still, functionally, I think the 410 is a good interface...except the master volume control, which I won't get into.
Still, plenty of good interfaces around, no matter what brand, and I'd recommend a microphone/interface combo as opposed to going straight for a USB microphone.
