Re: Game movie craptacularity continues, intensifies

Still consolidating, here's a coupla semi-related items.

» Fox Licensing To Handle Halo Franchise

This Hollywood Reporter story reports that Twentieth Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising has signed an agreement with Microsoft to handle the licensing of the Halo game franchise to a number of other products. Of course there are already a large number of Halo products ranging from comic books to novels to action figures and others. Ironically Fox's movie division was one of the two (the other being Universal) that pulled the funding out of the planned Halo movie in the fall of 2006. The article did not mention anything about any new movie deals.

» DOA: Dead Or Alive Bombs At Box Office

This AP story via Yahoo reports that DOA: Dead Or Alive, the movie adaptated from the Temco fighting game series, was a massive bomb at the box office this weekend. Released in just 505 theaters, the movie only had $460 in tickets sold per theater bringing the movie's total weekend box office to just $232,000. By comparision, the weekend's number one movie, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, had $14,499 in tickets sold per theater.

http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsart … chid=16024

DOA actually had a surprise good notice or two- IIRC the Village Voice? confused

(So, was Galactus just a voice in the clouds as rumored, like Marlon Brando in Superman? Anyway, apparently Alba uber alles... wink)

No wonder it bombed. No theaters & no ad budget.

Never heard of a DOA movie either. Never saw a trailer. I might have added another $8 to that total if I had known.

Devon Aoki ... Kasumi

IMDB is your friend. smile (And you'd rather suffer thru Van Dammage and watch Raul Julia make money for a new patio than watch Aoki & Jaime Pressly? I mean, OK, Kylie Minogue, but still... and this only took two minutes, not 102. tongue)

I could barely tell who was playing what part.

Then you need to watch the 1080p version. big_smile

Re: Game movie craptacularity continues, intensifies

Why isn't Peter Jackson making the bloomin' Hobbit movie?  It's practically written in screenplay format with all the effects shots story-boarded out already!

Second, if they want a alien blockbuster set on an orbital strip, why not do something with an actual story like Ringworld?

Last I heard Jackson had a little disagreement with New Line over his earnings from LoTR. They don't want him, parent Co. WB begs to differ. Impasse.

Old news? Halo 3 is coming $oon to make H2's sales look weak. You got some marketing tie-ins from Niven?

Didn't think so. The only Louis Wu that counts is at HBO. smile

This can either be seen as a WTF? or a 'Bout Damn Time.
Max Payne finally got a movie going for it. Apparently, it's an indie flick, and I think this is good for the movie. Since they probably won't be going after too many dollars, we might see a quality picture.

And the voice. Sam Lake IS Max Payne. Ah, well.

The poster has lens flare and the viewer won't have any jumping puzzles to solve. The omens are good.

Here's the thing, though. The only original bit for Max Payne was the game mechanics. First one to use the bullet-time, IIRC.

The story was absolute smurf. Maybe on purpose, but still.

I guess I'm the only one who liked it.

Hardly. It was pulp fiction... I remember a pretty good movie with that title, too. I guess if you hate all comic books and graphic novels you'd hate Max.

It'd be a pretty misleading poster, then. Anyhoo, more movie news.

» Far Cry Movie Now Filming

Biz.Gamedaily is reporting that the movie version of Crytek's first person shooter title Far Cry is currently filming in Vancouver. As previously reported prolific video game movie director Uwe Boll (House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, Bloodrayne) is at the helm of the Far Cry movie with German actor Til Schweiger cast in the main role of Jack Carver. Emanuelle Vaugier, Udo Kier, Ralf Moller and Michael Pare are among the other known actors in the film. The Far Cry movie is expected to be released sometime in 2008. Recently Freestyle Productions announced plans to release two of Boll's already completed video game movies, Postal (September 2007) and In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (January 2008). A direct-to-DVD sequel to Bloodrayne is scheduled for release this October.

You can never get too much Uwe, and when I say never I mean always... I think there are quite a few more such in the works, but can't remember titles offhand.

Thought they were originally gonna cast Dwayne Robinson as Jack Carver. Oh well, guess they changed their mind. Probably thanks to Eww Boll. Sigh, for once i'd like to see good writers and directors behind game based movies instead of the guys from the nosebleeds. Some of the kids on that On The Lot show actually make some of these directors look foolish.

...which seems appropriate. The game had Max getting beat up a lot, he gets the baseball bat (great poster soon after wink) and starts returning the favor while still taking a lot himself, and the health powerups are painkillers.

[cabinet/rattling pill sound]

This could be good. But I still want to play the game again even more.

Yep, more on the way:

» Alone In The Dark II Movie Begins Filming In August

Horror film web site Bloody-Disgusting.com is reporting that Alone in the Dark II, the sequel to director Uwe Boll's 2005 released video game based movie, will begin shooting in August for a direct-to-DVD release. Cast members in the movie include Lance Hendriksen, Ralf Moeller and Rick Yune. Both movies are based loosely on the long running survival horror game series. Developer Eden Studios and publisher Atari have been working on a new game in the series for some time but there hasn't been a development update on the new game for some time.

Yet more Uwe! eek Make it stop, make it stop... whaa

The Joblo.com web site has the first release (in Flash format unfortunately) of the trailer to the upcoming movie adaptation of the lo[ng-running?] Interactive-Eidos Hitman game series. The movie will be released on Oct. 12; the trailer will also be put in front of the prints to Live Free or Die Hard when it is released to theaters on Wednesday.

"Transformers: The Sequel."

It could happen.

Talking with Entertainment Weekly recently, director Michael Bay was briefly questioned about sequel possibilities and what he's doing next. Here's an excerpt:

How are you sitting with the idea of directing another Transformers movie?

Let's see how this one does. I've got a lot of ideas for the next one. There's a lot of really cool, big robot stuff that I had in my head that we didn't do. [..]

I doubt that. hmm
