Re: Game movie craptacularity continues, intensifies
I dunno guys, Hand of God is pretty tongue-in-cheek and weird. It'd take a lot of effort on Boll's part to screw it up, seeing as it would be on par with his other productions.

Someone needs to slap these people in the face, or at least cold water. There was NO story behind any of these old games. Pac-Man, no story, Defender, no story, Asteroids, no story, Joust, no story, Marble Madness, no story, even Zelda, no story. Either it's some form of interactive puzzle, or it's a watered down version of the old interactive stories with more interaction and less story. Yet the game companies get to push out sequel after sequel pretending there was a back story. In some cases it goes well, as it has with Zelda, sometimes it goes bad. But trying to make movies through this method.....
Hey, I think they could work Zelda into a decent action-fantasy movie. There's much better source material out there, though.

The Marios Bros. movie was neat in an odd sort of way. Casting Mojo Nixon for a small role added much +++

Altho, mostly it's cited as maybe the worst game movie evar.
I think I can beat it, tho. If I make Halo Killer Klowns Meet Plan 9 in Outer Space (working title), anyone up for acting in it for... um... a share of the profits?

Re: Game movie craptacularity continues, intensifies
Guess what.
Biz.Gamedaily is reporting that movie director Uwe Boll has gotten the rights to direct yet another film based on a video game. This time it's Zombie Massacre, an unreleased driving action game for the Wii from developer 1988 Games. The developers will work with Boll on the movie version while they shop the game Zombie Massacre to publishers. Boll will film the movie version in 2009.
Zombie Massacre is a driving/shooting game for up to four players. The goal is to drive a fully-armed nuclear warhead (that's stowed in the trunk of their vintage 1950s convertible) into the center of a city overflowing with zombies. After depositing the weapon, players will then have to make it out of the city just as quickly as they entered it before the warhead detonates.

So basically Blizzard said "GTFO" when someone asked them, but Sony said "Sure."
I do remember being in theatres a while ago and seeing previews for Everquest II on the big screen (lawl). And then immediately forgot all about it. Does anyone even play anymore? Everyone I know personally is either on WoW or Guild Wars ot simply quit MMOs all together.

Re: Game movie craptacularity continues, intensifies
...and this one should be properly Epic!
Former Epic Games Art Director To Direct CGI Thundercats Movie
This Variety story reports that Jerry O'Flaherty, formerly the art director at Epic Games, has now moved into the movie business and has been hired by Warner Brothers to direct a CGI movie based on the classic 1980's animated TV series Thundercats. O'Flaherty worked at Epic as Studio Art Director for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3 before leaving to pursue his film career. He also worked at the now defunct Ion Storm and Westwood Studios. ..snip:
O'Flaherty had been looking to make the leap into movies and was considering several projects, even live action.
But the "Thundercats" story appealed to him, as well as the fact that vidgames are increasingly incorporating lavish animated sequences that mimic pics, making a toon a much easier transition.
"It feels like a natural thing for me to step into," he said. "Games have come so far now. The last four years of my life have been about bringing the energy of filmmaking into the videogame experience."
The Thundercats movie is said to be true to the spirit of the 1980's TV show. No release date has been announced.

[crystal ball]Cliffy will direct the CGI remake of '87's He-Man movie to further his ongoing quest to be a rock star. He will lobby but fail to be cast to voice the title character or arch-villain.

They claim it isn't wow but warcraft that is getting the movie (since there obviously isn't much plot going on in wow).

Hitman movie wussied up for PG-13 rating.

Oh wait, it's a rumor. blah.
[edit]just kidding
I'm told that the studio realizes that to capture the essence of Agent 47 they have to make an R-rated film and that's definitely what the studio expects the film to get when it hits the MPAA "soon." In fact they are "embracing" the R.

Re: Game movie craptacularity continues, intensifies
Meanwhile Michael Bay is back fussing about Blu-ray as if Transformers was The Grapes of Wrath. Gotta love the South Park still.
Michael Bay Back on Blu-ray Bandwagon
Despite Bay’s great success on HD DVD with Transformers, the action director is showing little faith in the future of the high-definition optical format. Speaking to USA Today regarding the smashing release of Transformers on high-definition, Bay commented on Paramount and DreamWorks’ decision to go HD DVD-exclusive saying, “It's short-sighted and it has delayed consumers' moving to HD (home video). As a director, my critical eye is that Blu-ray is where my money is. Consumers are smart, and they are going to wait it out.”
In which case, it doesn't much matter, eh?
The Transformers director’s critical view of the home market release isn’t limited to just the HD DVD version, however, as he also told the paper that the DVD release was “not as good as it could have been.”
“I was traveling promoting (Transformers) while they were doing the DVD,” Bay said. “You try to guide people as to what to do (in making it), but ultimately if you rush your date, you are not going to get the DVD as good as it could be. … Studios want to pump this stuff out, and my job is to care about it and try to put the right people on it. They just see it as a show they are selling, and I see it as a movie. That's how your movie lives on, in the DVD format.”
Paramount probably burned the War & Peace manuscript while they were at it.

Someday if not already they are gonna have a combo drive to play all the formats and all this nonsense will end. Till then its just gonna be a feces throwing match or at least something similar to those old N64 commercials where the colors were at war with each other in the person's mind.

Combo drives have been produced for some time, but need to improve and come down in price.

Re: Game movie craptacularity continues, intensifies
we have combo drives for everything but HD now, but correct me if I'm wrong, don't combo drives for BD/HD require more hardware? Or I guess just seperate lasers on the moving head since one is blue of course and the oher red. If they could make smaller/cheaper Blueray discs I could see it making more sense for HD to die, since that's the only reason I could see in general for keeping it. You don't ecessarily want to pay $30 for movies for ever. And I doubt many HD videos take up the whole BD.

The combo drives cost more than just buying two players due to licensing issues or some stupid measuring contest between the two companies.

I had one earlier (pre-our XBLing) but the cable crapped out again...
Biohazard (Resident Evil) CGI Movie Announced
This Capcom Japan press release has announced plans to produce Biohazard: Degeneration, a CGI movie based on the long running survivor horror game series known as Resident Evil in the West. Of course the game series is the subject of a trilogy of live action films (Resident Evil, Resident Evil Apocalypse and the just released Resident Evil Extinction). Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan will collaborate with Capcom on the newly announced CGI film. Little else was revealed about Biohazard: Degeneration other than it will have "groundbreaking visual effects and a brand-new story line" and that it will be released sometime in 2008.
