Laptop or Desktop...which should I buy?

I currently own a G4 iBook and a first generation G5 iMac. The iBook is used mostly for Web browsing when I go on brief trips and while I'm sitting upstairs watching TV with the wife, and on Sundays at our church to run our media program (videos, sermon notes, etc.) For our video presentations we are using an old (and unsupported) version of Sunday Plus. It does the job but is a little bit "jumpy" and out-of-date.

The G5 iMac is in my office downstairs and is used primarily for doing Web browsing, word processing with Microsoft Word and layout and design using Adobe Creative Suite C2, Logo Creator and Art Text. I also have a large iTunes library that I keep on a 750 GB external drive. I have an excellent set of computer speakers I attach to the G5 to listen to my music.

I have decided to upgrade to a new Mac with an Intel processor and have around $3,000 to spend.

My question is: Would you "forum folks" recommend purchasing one of the new MacBook Pros and a 24" HP monitor so that it can be used for all of my needs or wait until the new 24" iMacs come out in the near future, purchase one of those with all the bells and whistles, and keep using the G4 iBook for my Web browsing and church stuff?

Also...when considering a MacBook Pro with an external monitor, would I be better off purchasing the 15" model with extra ram and larger hard drive...or the standard 17" model?

If Rik happens to be wandering around and sees this, I'd appreciate his viewpoint, too.

Thanks!

Kev

I think waiting and deciding would be a good option.

Balloon Help is for problems that you need help with. Choosing a new Mac isn't a hardware or software problem.

Questions for jkev57: what made you decide that you have to upgrade to the new intel processor if your imac is only 3 years old? What do you like about  the imac form factor versus a laptop form factor, and which would you rather deal with all the time? What bothers you most about your G5 imac?

If it was me, I'd go for the MacBook Pro (and more RAM and HD space is, IMHO, better than 2" of screen real-estate for most purposes, especially if you will routinely be plugging in an external monitor anyway).

Good question, Knobtwirler!

In the past year, I've had to have the G5's logic board replaced once and the power supply replaced three times. (The last time being two weeks ago.) In addition, I've already had to have the logic board and power supply on my iBook replaced once this year.

My AppleCare coverage on the iBook ends in August and on the G5 iMac in November.

I have had all of the above repairs, including the total replacement of my original G5 iMac which was D.O.A. when it arrived in my office back in October 2004, covered by my warranty or AppleCare extended warranty. Each time I do so, by the way, I have to drive 2 hours up to and back from the Apple Store in St. Louis.

I'm tired of the driving to St. Louis and dealing with the down time without a computer (I also do freelance writing for newspapers and graphic design). But most of all I'm afraid of the expense ahead of me once my AppleCare is up.

I like a laptop just fine but there is also something great about having a dedicated desktop unit, too. It's just that, financially, I won't be able to do both at this time.

If I wait until the new iMacs come out (that is, if they come out before my AC warranty expires in November, LOL!) and purchase one of those, I'll hold on to my iBook for awhile until I can afford a MacBook to replace it. The iBook has been a little more reliable than the G5 iMac has.

Re: Laptop or Desktop...which should I buy?

Well......

Apple does not make a desktop they make workstations and laptops tongue

The MBP is probably faster than the iMac  "desktop"with the older laptop innards. roll

The iMac can support dual monitors the iMac and an external.

So can the MBP but one of them is going to be the smaller 15" or 17"  MBP display

It is actually easier to upgrade the HD in the MBP over the "desktop" iMac the "desktop" requires removing the LCD pannel which voids the warranty  confused

I think the MBP currently supports more RAM 4GB vs 3GB (both use SDO DIMM laptop memory) and maybe even FireWire 800 vs 400 to boot

The iMac is waaaaay over due for an update rumor has it it will be updated in the next few months

The iMac has no upgrade advantage over the MPB and you are still out a whole computer if something should die but it is cheaper and has a 20" monitor as an option but has none of the  portability of the MPB.

if you have 3k to spend I would look at a MPB 17" or for that money possibly a Mac Pro if you have a monitor to use

Re: Laptop or Desktop...which should I buy?

Sorry about using the wrong terminology in my previous post, cleekj. I've been a Mac user since 1985 and I know the term I should have used to describe the G5 iMac was "workstation."

...But then, I get in trouble with my church members because sometimes I forget and call Jesus "the Savior dude"...so whadaya expect?

Did you perhaps mean to write MBP 17" instead of MPB 17"?

Re: Laptop or Desktop...which should I buy?

Actually, he was saying the Mac Pro is a workstation.  The iMac is technically a desktop, but cleekj thinks of it as more of a desk-bound laptop.

If it's between an iMac and a MBP, MBP all the way.  The iMac is a bit less expensive, but there's really no advantage to the iMac other than price and monitor size.  If you're the type of person who could benifit from both systems, the MBP is the "happy medium."  Plus, the MBP has an express card slot, which could come in handy for wireless broadband, or future technologies.

Oh, OK...now I get what he was trying to say, Mr T!

Thanks for clarifying...

Nothing like missing the point after missing the point!!

I appreciate your thought on the matter and would still like to hear from others that might have something to share.

By the way, Mr T, any advantage of getting a 17" over a 15" if I'm going to be using a 24" external monitor at home anyway?

Re: Laptop or Desktop...which should I buy?

The fact of the matter is you can't compare the current laptops against an iMac because we have no clue what Apple is going to do to the iMac besides most likely making it smaller and axing the 17" model.

Re: Laptop or Desktop...which should I buy?

According to today's news post on Mac|Life, the new iMacs will be coming out sometime late next month or early August.

Of course, they've been rumored for sometime now...but I would guess that they should be coming out sometime within the next two to three months anyway. I know a lot of people who've been holding off buying anything until Leopard is released.

If you take it with you, you'll have a bigger monitor while on the go.  If you prefer the smaller & lighter profile of the 15, then you might as well go with that instead.

The other thing to take into account is dual monitor situations.  You can have the document you're working on on the 24" screen, and have all your palates on the other.  Or you might be typing a word doc on one screen, and run a web browser on the other.  If you feel you need more space in a dual-monitor setup, then maybe you'd want the 17".  If you don't care about dual monitors, then maybe you'd prefer the 15".

You cant even assume that as Apple doesn't always do what the rumors suggest they will.

Re: Laptop or Desktop...which should I buy?

Hm - for $3000, couldn't you get the low-end MacBook and one of the top-end iMacs?  Seems like that would be win-win.  You could sell your old Macs to cover much of that cost.

I would wait to see what apple does with the iMac, but if I was buying today I'd go with the mac pro.  if that's not something you're interested in then between the MBP and the iMac I'd go with the MBP. I know I said the iMac earlier but I'm changing my opinion.

Re: Laptop or Desktop...which should I buy?

I think the MacPro is by far the best buy of the entire apple line.  As shown in the post above^^.  You can even throw in a nice graphics card and 2G of ram without reaching the price of the MBP or 24" imac.  Or if your OK with the standard configuration you could get a 20"-22" monitor for a couple hundred dollars on NewEgg.

Hard to say: only you can determine if the larger screen that the 17" MBP has is worth the $300 difference. The 2.4 GHz 15" MBP and  the 17" MBP have identical video cards (the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 256MB SDRAM).

Since the hard drive is not easily removed (it can be, just not easily) from the MBP, it might be worth your while to get the MBP with the best drive for your needs (depending on whether or not you prize the 160 GB @ 7200 RPM speed over the 90 more GBs that the 250 GB @ 4200 RPM drive gives you).

On the other hand, definitely consider a third-party for RAM. The $750 that Apple charges for the 4 GB option? Other World Computing offers 4 GBs for $220. RAM is a consumer-installable part so replacing it yourself will not void any warranties. Going this route would pay for more than the difference between the 15" and 17" MBP, AND a larger hard drive. OWC even has a RAM buying program so you can some money back by selling them the original 2 GBs--$50 for the pair of 1 GB sticks.

Yeah, but at least it seems to be consistent in the rumors.

Anyway, if you're really considering between an iMac and a laptop and can wait a month I'd wait.
