Re: iPhone Guided Tour

Already seen it.

I wonder if the Google directions requires a live internet connection, or if it stores the data.

I an disappointed at the lack of AIM support.

Re: iPhone Guided Tour

Anyone want to bet they messed up and slipped the YT prototype into the original "How it works" commercial scene?

Re: iPhone Guided Tour

Nice to see that they have multiple tab/window support with the web browser - that wasn't something I was exepecting.  AIM should work via AIM express or Meebo.com (which is lame, but coudl be worse).  Word support is interesting, even if it's just the ability to view them.

The guy doing the demo wasn't that bad - not as charasmatic as Steve, but not terrible either.

There's also a way to do AIM via SMS, but I forget the process.

Re: iPhone Guided Tour

I know from AIM, you can send an SMS by using the screen name "+1.800.555.5555" - and that user can reply.

Totally different. This is using AIM functions through SMS.

I don't personally use it, but doesn't the phone have iChat?

I know about AIM and SMS but I want to avoid network data charges. I would like AIM over wifi.

Re: iPhone Guided Tour

So, no video using the camera, and no usage of iPod tunes as ringtones?  And is that a SIM-slot cover I see on the top...?

Re: iPhone Guided Tour

Meebo & AIM express (which CtC mentioned) work in regular Safari. Meebo better than AIM Express

I'm pretty sure it has a sim slot but have no clue if that is the slot or not.

Re: iPhone Guided Tour

I would really like to use iTunes purchases as ringtones...

I really hope the data plans for the iPhone are "reasonable" (you decide what that means for you)

...either way the more I think about the iPhone the more places and times I think that  having moble web + phone would be so awesome to have just for business/school use.

I wonder how long it will take to reach some kind of saturation level? (ie: walk into AT&T store and get one w/maybe a 3-5day wait period)

Re: iPhone Guided Tour

The tour looked fantastic. I can only wait until iPhones finally come to Japan as version 3 or 4.

That said, my cell phone has stopped recognizing button pushes and has become useless so I went to the local shop to check out new phones. We're totally G3 here so streaming TV, e-mail, Internet, even phone calls, are pretty much a given on just about all the phones. One even has a 5 megapixel camera--2 to 3 is standard. I still want an iPhone.

A couple of things struck me today. Some of my students are saying they upgrade yearly. My present phone is only a year and a half old, but broken is broken. The one before that lasted 4 or 5 years. The one before that about the same. The one before that fit in a suitcase. I wonder what the iPhone will be like. Will people start keeping them longer?

Second, my first cell phone was a $1000+, all the others have been basically $0. This time I'm looking at $600+. Pricing has completely changed. Cell phones are costing again. In that respect, the iPhone still looks VERY, VERY attractive!

All I can do is wait.

Cheers,
ptervin...on the other side

Well, the Licensing Agreement for iTunes music you purchase says you can't use them as ring tones.  Other then that, I see no where that states you can't "Drag and Drop" a track to be a ring tone.  I doubt that won't happen.

As for videos off of the camera... probably a possibility still, if not - something a nice software update can't fix.

Oh, indubitably. The same here, I don't want to memorize a bunch of commands if I don't have to, but I will. The reason I bring it up is that all the carriers are really pushing unlimited text these days, so why not?

Their SMS feature looks like iChat, but it isn't.

There are already several web based, iphone optimised services that can connect you to AIM.

I want AIM/MSN/Yahoo/GTalk running in the background WHILE I surf. Or do whatever.

Well, since iPhone has multiple tabs - I don't see why not.

Re: iPhone Guided Tour

It's going to be an aesthetics thing. We'll see if it doesn't suck.

I mean, my Blackberry can have AIM/YIM running in the background and send me a dialog box letting me know if something needs my attention while I'm composing email or processing a form on the company's site. Or even while I'm on speakerphone.

Point is, these applications launch and stay going so long as I have signal on my Blackberry; I hate to think that I'm going to have to consciously go into a web browser, pull up a site, wait to ensure connection and go from there. And if I drop signal, and with GSM that's VERY LIKELY, for me to go about the process again? And again? No thanks.

Yeah, chatting in a web browser on a phone is pretty lame.  I would have thought Apple could have worked out a better way to put 3rd party apps on the iphone.

Oh, and for me to clarify it's "VERY LIKELY" around here. For me. Your mileage may vary. Especially if you're not out in smurf.
