Lost book policy
My school has a big problem with students not returning books. In total, the school gives out about a hundred thousand dollars worth of books each semester. In past years, one could get away with losing all their books (or keeping them at home) until the end of senior year when they would be prevented from graduating until they paid up or returned the books.
Not that anyone ever chose to do that. In any case, that obviously wasn't enough - a new system where any student in any grade who has not returned a single book will not receive a report card today or on any other day until they return, or pay for (check or money order only) the lost book.
So, here's my dilemma. I've lost one school book. Just one. It was Hamlet. It was boring. I left it in my math class. I plan to call my school in 45 minutes (when I called at 7 they told me the system wasn't up yet - the 'system' apparently needs an hour to get it up) and ask just which book(s) they think I am missing.
My worry is that they will claim I am missing more than one book, or the wrong book alltogether. Hamlet costs 8-12 bucks. A good textbook can cost me anywhere between 60 and 90 dollars.
Whenever we get books from teachers, we are handed a receipt. We fill out the information. The teacher collects the receipt, we get the book. We return the book months later, and get the receipt. We are instructed to destroy the receipts - instructed by ever single teacher - because all remaining receipts are sent to administration to compile the missing book list.
What do I do if they claim I am missing more than one book, or the wrong book, and tell me I have to pay a gajillion bucks before I can get my report card???
I call back in 50 minutes to find out what books they have me on record as missing.
I get on my bike and ride over immediatly after that to bring them the check and get my report card.
So, Macadd - er.... MacLifers, what is a young student like myself to do?
Kudos if you read that whole thing.

I just dropped $165 on a calculus book I was told would only cost $120 by the school itself
When I was in high school, I wrote in and took a few of the lost books in the back.

Re: Lost book policy
I've spent $300 on a physics textbook (set of books admittedly, but just for two consecutive classes)

When I finished my freshman year of high school they tried claiming I never returned my Algebra book. I got a letter in the middle of the summer saying I had to pay $65 for a new book. The problem is, they were throwing the books out because they were ordering new books for the next year. They wanted me to pay $65 for trash.
I did return the book and I had them call my teacher, who confirmed that I did return it. They left me alone after that.
