Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

NOTE:  THIS THREAD IS GOING TO BE RETIRED

SEE THE NEW THREAD:  OCTOBER 2007  http://www.maclife.com/forums/topic/100596

=======================
NOTE: I prefer the InCrease or QuickFold installer.

This is interesting.  Folding now appears as a panel in System Preferences for Intel Macs running the SMP console client.   http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-SMP.html

part of 5 steps to install

The "console" download link http://www.stanford.edu/%7Ekasson/foldi … MP_OSX.tgz

Don't forget.  We are Team 18.

There's a new client for the Intel Macs  http://forum.folding-community.org/ftopic21314.html

I'll keep an eye on that thread.

There seems to be something wrong with the new FAH6 software, it shows up in activity monitor as a powerPC app, that can't be right can it? confused

I'm using quickfold for now, it still runs the old FAH5 software shrug

The new client , version 6, is no improvement, say the early reviews.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

I had a bad WU and InCrease would not work today (Monday).  I had a @#$@# time getting a new install working.      InCrease and QuickFold wouldn't go.

I finally followed the instructions in the Stanford FAQ pages.     I have to write up the crontab, but I'll do it later.

I'm running Folding fah 6.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

**IMPORTANT**

running version 5 is NOT an option. The beta expired today, so once you quit and try to restart fah5, you will receive a message that it expired October 1, 2007.

I will make the necessary changes to the QuickFold installer so that it downloads the new version.

Also of note: You MUST run it with the -smp option.

Yep.
Hopefully we/he can cobble together a script to perform the upgrade. It shouldn't be too hard.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

Thanks, AG3.

mmmmm...... I'm 30 % of the way into this protein.

A volunteer, please ?

Does this installer require a passkey ?

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

Passkey? Are you asking if this requires admin authorization to install? If so, the answer is no.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

There was a passkey which was required ( ? ) when I did the manual install with the download from Stanford's pages.

That's news to me. It apparently isn't a requirement:

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

I had a power failure so I made a backup of my folding folders.

QuickFold detected a previous install and so it did not install, but it would not uninstall (for new users: the uninstall is ??  deletion of the automatic startup of folding in the crontab).  sad  I deleted the crontab manually.   Quickfold ran and fah6 found the current protein.   smile

However, how QF found the current version ?    Don't know.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

I downloaded new fah6 Beta1 & new InCrease 2.3.1. Geez, doesn't anybody ever update their installation instructions? I have fah6 folding my current unit which was at 52% when I did the update. I clumsily followed the Stanford instructions (which still say "fah5" everywhere), using the terminal window commands to set variables and start fah6 folding. Now it would seem that I can't shut the terminal window nor can I fully control fah6 from the InCrease application. I can pause, but, not stop & start?

Any idea what I'm doing wrong or how I can at least shut the terminal window without terminating F@H?

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

Try this plan first:
0. Close the Terminal window.
1. Try InCrease 2.3.1
2. It might find the current Folding folder.
3. Use that to "Start" the Folding.  Just click start if the right column shows any Folding folder.

----- if that doesn't work, let me know.

Also, what is the name of the Folding folder in Home/ Library ?  I can write a quick crontab for you.

ALSO, go to Terminal and type
crontab -l

Report the results here if any.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

cry Well, I stopped it. InCrease 2.3.1 won't restart it. This dialog I get in the InCrease dialog box:

Unit at ~/Library/Foldingathome:
cannot start: isWritable YES, hasClient YES, isStopped YES, isLocal YES, owner -tcsh

I think it has to do with owner, but, I don't know much about unix commands. So I don't know how to change it.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

mmm

Let's  make sure the crontab is empty

1. Make an empty text file and put in the Home folder.
2. Name the file  "empty.txt"
3. Make a new Terminal window.
4. copy and paste this into Terminal.  hit return just in case.

crontab <~/empty.txt
5.  Your crontab is now empty.

The simplest thing to do is:  ignore the current folding folder.

Download and run the QuickFold installer for SMPs  http://www.maclife.com/forums/topic/100596

It MIGHT, maybe, possibly find the curret protein.

Great. I did all that. How do I use it? I think it found the current protein. It gives me a message that says, "It appears that Folding@Home is already installed".  Asks if I want to uninstall. I answered yes. It says "Can't get <<class bhit>> of "".". What the hell does that mean?

Edit: I've discovered that QuickFold did not find the current protein. Instead, it just went out and loaded a new one! It created it's own folder, "FAH" and apparently downloaded FAH6 and installed it? Now, I have two different Proteins running. confused

New edit: I can't get rid of "quickfold_SMP.dmg" because Quick Fold SMP is in use. Shouldn't I be able to get rid of the compressed download file?

AppleScrpt error in Artemis' installer. And probably a bug.

We will try again in the morning.  Nite.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

Well, I finally bit the bullet, dumped everything including a protein that wes 63% complete. Somehow, both the protein I already had folding, but, couldn't wrest control over using InCrease and a new protein that apparently was downloaded by ArtemisG3's Quick Fold script file, were intertwined in such a way that if I stopped one the other would also stop. The time to complete the older of the two proteins went from 10 hours to 13 hours and the new protein showed a whopping 80 hours to complete. It was a Project 2608, 1350 pointer as I recall. It seemed hopeless. So, I just stopped them both. Dumped everything. Redownloaded InCrease 2.3.1, Quick Fold, set up a folder called FAH, downloaded fah6 Beta, put the two executables in the FAH folder and ran Quick Fold. Now I have a new protein running that I can fully control with InCrease. Everything seems normal again.

Note: I also had to dump the InCrease Preference file so it would stop looking for the old folder that had a different name.

This bad stuff is likely all my doing since I haven't taken the time to fully understand how to use the unix commands / tools. blush

Happily there are some great folks on these boards that have the knowledge / experience that I lack! Thanks for your help and patience. big_smile

Re: Folding on Intel Macs (thread heading for retirement)

I apologize if QuickFold only compounded the problem.

One thing I should mention is that there is no need to download the executables from Stanford's site, as that is one thing that QuickFold does for you.
