Re: Wii Demand Still High

What drives me... "batty" is that not only have I never seen one in a store, when you go on eBay there are auctions with 8+ units in a photo.  THOSE tools are keeping me from getting a Wii.  Them and Nintendo.  Dammit... I want one bad.

I'm contemplating just staying the night with a friend in NYC and getting on line at the Nintendo Flagship store at like 4am.  Maybe I'll pull an all-nighter and that will make my wait in line easier.  Curses.

Re: Wii Demand Still High

When I got my brother in law a Wii I stood in line at Circuit City about an hour before they gave out tickets. No one else ever showed up. You really just have to go to the right stores. Yeah, they still get sold out super fast but it isn't that hard to get them these days if you're willing to wake up early on Sunday.

I sure hope that was not a serious reply. The PS2 was rather poor. Even the Dreamcast could duplicate some of it's abilities to a certain extent. In fact the first PS2 titles barely looked much better than original PS1 games.

That's bullsmurf.

The PS2 was a good solid leap above the PS1.

You're right though in that it wasn't the most powerful system of last gen.

Here's the order:
XBOX
Game Cube
PS2
Dreamcast

The PS2 and Dreamcast are sorta in the same ballpark (with the edge to the PS2), while the XBOX is significantly better (for instance, Doom 3 is only possible on an XBOX).  The NGC is sorta in the middle but, due to lack of attention from developers, some cross-platform games ended up looking better on the PS2 compared to the NGC.

Though it's true that the PS2 is a quantum leap ahead of the PS1, many early PS2 games looked awful for its generation.  It's not the fault of the hardware; it's because developers needed to get better acquainted with the strengths and weaknesses of the hardware - for instance, shuffling data between VRAM and main memory.

Yep exactly. It did take them awhile before they really got used to the PS2 hardware. Dreamcast was rather easy to develop for so it's first games did have more degree of polish than the PS2's starters. Could have probably gotten another year out of the DC if M$ and Nintendo weren't so hot on the heels of the PS2. New hardware does perk developers interest quickly.

It didn't help that Sony's dev docs were crap. IIRC a BioWare title (BG2?) was the only early game to use FSAA, because they had to figure it out for thenselves. The massively parallel hardware was powerful in its way, but no one knew how to use it, and Sony left them to figure it out- "We're the biggest market, so you must."

Build? I don't. I expect they contract their production; I'm just saying they didn't build a new Wii factory. Financial analysts have written enough on the situation.

They underestimated demand. OK, but I'm suspecting....

You see NAG, that's my problem.  I don't know when stores are getting shipments in.  Nobody will tell me!  Yesterday was the first time that I'd called a store and heard anything besides, "we're out of stock."  A lady at WalMart told me she thought they might have one left, went and checked, but it wasn't so.  They had gotten eight in that morning and they were all gone by 3.

Yup, you have to wake up at like 6, check your Sunday newspaper for the ads and go to the stores that say they have Wiis in stock.

Some chains like Best Buy put their weekly ads up after Saturday midnight. Been that way for years.

Lawl... the problem isn't that I'm not willing to wake up early, it's just that I've never, ever, ever checked ads in a newspaper.  Damn punk kids.   tongue

Note my previous plan to get in line at the NYC store at like four.  It's on.  If I can't get one then I think I'll collapse into a deep depression and start my slow, downwards spiral.

Websites for the stores might have them. They also post them up on their doors at midnight about as bat said.

Yup. Companies like Nintendo definitely don't manufacture their own goods. Most people don't. Most folks contract a manufacturer.

On the other hand, companies like Samsung can manufacture their own products because they're also in the business of manufacturing products and semiconductors.

Maybe because the cheapest reseller for a new Wii is $389.95? AFAIK, this is just the basic console.

I will get one eventually, but I'll wait until they're more available. I'm not in a huge hurry.

Re: Wii Demand Still High

This week I started interning at a small startup game company, (PixelActive) and I'm working on getting their stuff working on the Wii. The owner is a guest professor at my university for some of the graphics classes, and I wowed him enough for him to offer me a job.

Bat: currently, there actually isn't much "fix". wink It's a dev kit, so it doesn't really play normal games. Since I'm the first and only person to touch it, there isn't much running on it yet... But don't worry: the Wii is really the only next-gen system that I plan on getting at this point. I just haven't gotten around to getting it yet. tongue
