Actually, i suggested you post your hatred for commercials in here, but this is good, too.

$1k for going 85 in a 65... personally, I think that's a good idea.

So what's the fine for 10 or 15mph over? I imagine it would be much lower.

Their speed limits are too low and the fines are too high.

Note that while the fines are outrageous, the state also levies up to an $1100 "driver responsibility tax" on residents, making it far worse. I live in Maryland, so if I get busted in VA, it's just the regular fine. Also, judges are forbidden to reduce it or suspend it. There's also an annual fee for any points you have on your license, that lasts as long as the points.

Virginia is smurfing crazy. I drove to Richmond one Sunday a few years ago, and they were having an "enforcement day" where they had state police setting up speed traps every two miles -- literally-- all the way down I-95. It took forever. I just stay out of their crappy state as much as possible.

Knowing VA, that will probably get you the death penalty.

Instantaneous driver's license suspension is the fair cure for those high speeds.

Fines for excessive speeding should be excessive.  Over 100mph should be at least $5000.  Over 120 (like some of these sports cars will do) should result in the state taking the car.

Really, that's amazing. 

My car does about 36 MPG at 65 MPH.  It does about 28 MPG at 75 - 80 MPH.

I have, and I've maintained the same efficiency 65-80. I've never maintained >80 for long enough to tell, though.

I think this is some serious bullsmurf.  With most criminal activity, you have a chance to prove your innocence, but not with speeding.

I set my speed to 5 over the limit.  I'm passed by just about everyone on the road.

Recently I got pulled over.  The cop said he pegged me at 13 over.  CLEARLY, he zapped the SUV next to me, but mistakenly thought he got me.  Any idiot could have seen that it was 100 meters ahead of me by the time he pulled me over.

Unfortunately, it's your word against his.  AND, there is ZERO chance that you won't pay money, either via the ticket, lawyer's fees or as a transfered 'parking' fine if you win the court case.

I think that's some serious bullsmurf.  Speeding tickets are a TAX.  They do not save lives.  There are some really idealistic people in this thread...

A "sports" car will do a lot more then 120.
