With some folks still swearing by the arrow keys, the controller shouldn't be far off the 'real' Marathon experience. Now I can retire my Win95/DX2 version and not have to worry if it'll still work under DX9.0c.
Kewl.I never used the arrow keys. Originally used the numbers pad, and now I use WASD + mouse to play online. Guess I'm not a "purist". I love having a crosshair and hires textures. I suppose using a game pad controller is only a matter of getting used to it. I'm sure all you Halo kids won't have a problem.
Same here. Always used the numpad. Even took my numpad craziness into UT and did it successfully. New games tho require too much axis movement. Can't get away with the classic style marathon playing.

You're still cool, 'Pato. Anyway my point was just on the lines of the controller being not m/kb, more an alternate pointing device, hence about as intuitive for my ilk as arrow keys or num pad.

Halo-themed Xbox 360 hints at Microsoft making HDMI output standard-issue
When Peter Moore lifted up the Halo Special Edition Xbox 360 console at its reveal at the Microsoft E3 press conference on Tuesday night, most onlookers were likely disappointed by the lack of any truly new hardware, such as a built-in HD DVD drive, or price drop. But easily overlooked is the fact that the Halo-themed console could offer a glimpse into the future hardware versions of the Xbox 360.

Marathon. Coming Soon to XBLA.
We didn't mention it last night, because we were afraid it was going to be buried in the Halo flood coming from the press conference... but another game announced during the evening was a title many thought they'd never see - Marathon 2 for Xbox Live Arcade. A spectacular homage to Halo's predecessor, this is being built by Freeverse - and more specifically, the developers working on it have been members of the Marathon community for pretty much as long as the Marathon community has existed. These guys are the hardest of the hardcore, and if ANYONE was gonna touch this property for XBLA... these are the guys you want doing it. You can check out the official page at Xbox.com, but you can get some special info (and a LOT of screenshots) in our gallery right here. (Louis Wu 20:55:21 UTC)
My red. Lotsa links in there. (Halo flood... heh).

Re: Better news- E3
OK, one more followup to the above. The last link wasn't what I was expecting; it's all-new & exclusive.
Screenshots from Freeverse's Marathon: Durandal Port
On July 10, 2007, during the Microsoft Press Conference for E3 2007, it was announced that Freeverse was working on Marathon: Durandal for Xbox Live Arcade, fulfilling the dreams of countless Marathon-turned-Halo fans. Release is scheduled for later this summer, and you can read official information on Xbox.com, but we've got a little bit of exclusive info for you, and we've got 50 screenshots of the game to peruse. Marathon is absolutely the spiritual forbear to Halo - and so this absolutely belongs here on HBO. Here's a tidbit from the developers:
In Marathon: Durandal for Xbox Live Arcade, we added something we call "Survival mode", wherein we drop you into a level and assault you with wave after wave of really pissed-off Pfhor and S'pht. You know that dream, the one where you open your eyes and suddenly you realize that you're in a fire ant hive with a pair of shotguns and enough ammo to make John Rambo look like a gun control lobbyist? Wait, you don't have that dream? Anyway, that's what Survival is like. We even built four brand-new levels just for the mode, and we've tied it into the Xbox Live leaderboard system so you can show your friend Timmy just how much you rocked his best score.
All that - and it runs at 60 fps. w00t!

edit: 60 fps, they say? What, like after twelve years, they'll only optimize it up to 40 something?

Yup, to the standard 360 framerate. It'll be such a strain, it'll melt the remaining 360s.
The sweet thing is, even these screens show serious FSAA and texture fitering. Last time I fired it up, I was all 'OMG! The jaggiez, the texture shimmer!'
All gone. Freeverse make all betterz. Smoooooth.

Someone mentioned recently missing 8-way Marathon co-op.
This supports 8-way co-op via system link, and some unspecified (at least I couldn't nail it down) number via Xbox Live. The Xbox.com page:
• Epic story: The game’s entire story (over 13000 lines of text) has been translated into seven languages.
• Upgraded visuals: All images in the game have been redrawn in high definition.
• Modern networking: Marathon: Durandal features a new modern networking layer built with Xbox LIVE® in mind.
• Superior control: The redesigned controls take full advantage of the Xbox 360 Controller and enhance playing a first-person shooter on a home console.
Custom soundtracks, voice comm, original or upgraded HD graphics... schweet.
Freeverse is honored to have been chosen to bring one of the all-time great games to Xbox Live Arcade!
Mullins' paintings are used in several places, I suppose to get people to think HD, but you can just kick back and enjoy.

That would be me who mentioned the COOP 8 way.
I saw that note...hopefully it will remind developers of how real COOP was done and to stop giving gamers a pansy stripped down COOP experience.
Still with all the improvements, it is just Marathon 2. With no Forge level tools its just very basic. I'd like to see this lead to ported versions of some of the player built games like Marathon: EVIL and Tempus Irae. Both those had some sweet multiplayer maps.

A couple impressions from the Kotaku folks:
Project Gotham Racing 3 Impressions
http://kotaku.com/gaming/e307/project-g … 277837.php
Oh, and there isn't going to be a Geometry Wars Galaxies in this game, but there is going to be something along those lines.
Hmm...
Mass Effect Impressions
http://kotaku.com/gaming/e307/mass-effe … 277810.php
Could Mass Effect be the deepest role playing game for the Xbox 360 yet? Yes. Yes it could. The developers demoed a bunch of actual in-engine gameplay and in-game cutscenes for us earlier today, showing off just how far they've come since the last E3. We were impressed. And we can't wait for November.

So, uh. Guys. Any of you excited about Rock Band?

That drum set looks like a rack of marching band quad toms with a petal, not something worthy of rock. There isn't even a hi-hat. How the hell can you rock without a hi-hat? Christ, air-drumming 101 dictates "right hand on air hi-hat, left hand on air snare." Moreover, that's an awful lot of plastic for something people are going to beat on.
I recall playing a Japanese arcade version of a similar game, but the drum kit was more like a set of v-drums, and less like a cheep piece of ****.

Re: Better news- E3
Hadn't seen this yet, seems worth a note. I respect Jason Cross's opinion and usually agree; we have slight diff here, but...
What We Hated
...
That Halo 3 Trailer
Microsoft ended their press conference with a Halo 3 trailer that consisted of lots of quick cuts showing very brief moments from the single player game. It went by too fast to know what you were even looking at, and certainly didn't do much to change people's minds that Halo 3 "doesn't look as good as it should."
Really? OK; we'll agree to disagree, and it did avoid spoilers thereby- but
The funny thing is, some press saw about 20 minutes worth of the single player game in a behind-closed-doors demo later that night and were downright impressed by how great it looked. Seems like MS showed the wrong thing.
...the idea that the final game looks thatmuch better than the trailer is a bit mind-boggling.

What’s different about Marathon: Durandal on Xbox Live Arcade?
There are a number of new items.
New Engine. Marathon: Durandal is running in a true 3D engine on the Xbox 360.
New Save System. You still must find Pattern Buffers to save, but let's say you beat the first level and get to the 2nd level. What used to happen is if you died, you’d load a save game back on the first level. Now if you die, when you respawn you are brought back to the start of the new level (with all your weapons). Also if you save then immediately die the game takes note of this. If it happens really often (as in you saved in a really bad spot) it will respawn you back at a previous save point. This is to remove frustration.
HD Graphics. You can turn on HD graphics (they are on by default). This is a total replacement—walls, guns, aliens, effects even the marine.
720p Widescreen. The game is running in true widescreen at 720p. This actually gives you a bit more visual room.
60 frames a second game play. Marathon 2 was originally locked to 30 frames a second. We increased it to 60 (and ensured the existing logic transferred over to 60 ticks a sec instead of 30). This gives the game a much more fluid presentation than it’s computer counterpart.
Brand new networking layer. Instead of using the old Marathon networking system, we implemented a new one with ReplicaNet. This allows the game to play smooth and reliably over the Internet, something the original Marathon 2 could not do. This also allow for online coop play with up to 8 players (the original supported 8 players, but getting the game to not fall apart was another story).
(- Bat)
A control scheme designed for the 360. Bungie was very nice to us, and assisted us in setting up a control system very similar to Halo. Using these acceleration curves we are able to give players a fluid control system.
Achievements, Rich Presence and Leaderboards. Staples of the Xbox 360, but these give ultimate bragging rights. Plus our Achievements were designed with hardcore Marathon fans in mind.
French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese and Korean translations of the entire game. This is the most accessible Marathon to date. Every terminal (even the secret ones) were translated by Microsoft’s expert localization team.
Survival is a brand spanking new mode for Single Player Marathon, give us the scoop! What is it?
Survival is a giant truck that pulls up to your house one day, where a platoon of alien commandos jump out, kidnap you, and wail on you until you're dead. And then the truck explodes, just to make sure the job gets done. If you're lucky, you'll take out a few hundred of them before your final moments.
When you start a Survival game, you're dropped randomly into one of four brand-new deathtra--er, levels and given a metric -blam-ton of guns and ammunition. After you gather your bearings, we start teleporting groups of enemies, dozens at a time, into the level. It's literally wave after wave of Pfhor and S'pht against you, and we keep the action moving by changing things up every sixty seconds. The more enemies you sack--and the less damage you take--the higher your score will be at the end. (And we all want to be at the top of the Leaderboards, right?)
As you progress through each round, we rotate new threats in and out of the game, from lowly Pfhor Fighters to Hunters to Juggernauts. (Did I say Juggernauts, plural? Hmm.) [..]
Yep, just plain ol' Marathon... you, me, Levi and someone we rope in for 4-way M2 co-op when he gets his 'Box back if meat life ain't et me up yet?

Survival sounds like the levels I used to create. Fun with coop till it got boring running around with a rocket launcher or the nuke mortar launcher. One can only take so much of flying Pfhor/Bob guts either rare or in extra crispy form. Still, if your bored and need to kill a few mins, its nice fun.

Nah, usually when i'd get bored of killing Pfhor, i'd turn on whoever was playing COOP with me and start "accidentally" aiming too close to them
.
Not that I would ever do that now if I played M2 over a 360
. I've really grown up since then
