The 20 Worst Windows Features of All Time

I read this and realize how many things I hate about Windows!

8. End Task
A program hangs. You type <Ctrl><Alt><Del> to bring up the Task Manager, then click End Task to kill the app. Nothing happens. You try again and again, and it eventually works. Or doesn't. Why is such a basic operating-system need so flaky in 2007? We're not sure. Especially since Mac OS X's equivalent feature, Force Quit, manages to work perfectly every time.

It's even better when the task manager crashes and you can't ctrl-alt-del it into existence again!

The item about shutdown linked to this blog which provided an interesting viewpoint into how Microsofts' products get so crapped up.

That system update thing is annoying. I was organizing my music folder and went into the other room to get some food. I come back into my room to see that system update decided to restart my computer all by itself.

That is sooo not true. I have had the same thing happen to me on my Dual Core PowerMac G5 once or twice....
...but admittedly, not as often as my PC at home.

Me too. I end up having to go into Activity Monitor to kill the process - haven't had that not work yet.

To be fair, OS X has it's own problems some times. The other day I had a problem getting Finder, Safari and others to quit and force quit. Eventually I realized it was the FireWire port on my ACD and the FireWire HD I had connected to it that was causing the problem with Finder and by association Safari. Once I connected the FW HD directly the problem was solved. Still, there have been times. Usually it's a problem elsewhere stopping the app from quitting.

I absolutely hate that stupid bubble notification thing. They're annoying as heck.
And I hope 10.5 fixes how OS X hangs when the network messes up.

Re: The 20 Worst Windows Features of All Time
The update bubble are annoying but also completely avoidable by just doing auto-update at some off time like 3:00am. Thats how I have my wife's PC setup and I never see update alerts.
Now on the other hand her PC is still whining about the network cable I unplugged 6 months ago and gets entirly too excited about the fact that WOW!! after reboot the wireless network HAS BEEN FOUND!!!!

Re: The 20 Worst Windows Features of All Time
In discussing Apple, with all respect ( a look at my sig shows I am committed), a few things I can't believe are not done by Apple, in order of importance:
1. Resizing windows is so much more difficult being limited to the lower right corner, especially if it is off the screen.
2. The Trash Can is not capable of restoring a file to it's original location. In some cases where the file may be related to a program or other operation, this can be serious.
3. But absolutely worst is the inability to CUT and paste a file, as well as copy and paste. It is really difficult, and very distracting to the workflow to have to remember to go back and delete the file after moving it.
All three of these go into the "why does it have to be that way" category for me, and I would be very happy if someone tells me I am wrong and here is how to do it on any of these. But until this kind of issue is fixed, it must be said that the Mac, though very well done, and a delight to use, can still be improved... easily.
Regards,

Good point. I am excited about time machine, but had not considered it in that context. Thanks.

FWIW, if you select the file, drag it to another folder, then hold the command key while letting go of the mouse button, it'll do a move file instead of a copy file.
I do find myself wishing for a Cut/Copy/Paste file functionality though, you need to have two windows open or have the destination directory in a directory below the current one.
And the Finder haning on network shares is brutal. Read-only FTP is pretty bad too. FTFF!

Re: The 20 Worst Windows Features of All Time
I just started running windows in Parallels on my new MBP, and the stupid little pop-up reminders bleed through to the desktop even when Parallels is in Coherence mode (running Windows aps as OS X windows without the full Windows OS window). The company's mandatory 15 minute pw protected screen saver bleed through full-screen too. What a PITA.
It's a trip into bizarro world to run iTunes, Safari and Quicktime in Windows through parallels in coherence mode. It's an Apple app running in Windows on a Mac in parallels coherence mode so it looks like a regular window in OS X.

That, and taking away windowshading were the 2 things I missed most from OS 9.
To this day, the first thing I do after a fresh OS install is to install the Windowshades haxie. I'm pretty sure that functionality was removed to force people to use the Dock. I use both.

You are somewhat in error. It will undo a move to trash but only if it was the last move or copy done. Undoing again undoes the undo.
Nothing will undo an emptying of the trash yet though.

This link was on the list about the Shutdown behavior of Windows, it's a former Windows developer talking about how the Shutdown behavior of Windows was developed. Some good pro-Mac stuff in there.
What is the difference between Vista and OSX?
- Microsoft employees are excited about OSX.

Re: The 20 Worst Windows Features of All Time
ScifiterX, you are right, and I am aware of the undo, and when you can use it it can be a lifesaver, but it is no substitute for a restore feature in the much more likely event of discovering the mistake later, especially in a system or application file.
The point of this is the hope that someone at Apple looks at some of this and realizes just how close they are to having a near perfect OS, and would just bend a little and make some of these changes. Should they not do it, the reason escapes me.
Oh, and to Czachorski, for many years I was heavily involved with windows, primarily the versions of NT. Never did win 95, etc. But through all that time, i was never able to figure how to reliably stop those balloons from popping up.
Some have made comments about auto update in windows. That one you can solve, by leaving auto update on, but telling the machine you want notification, and NOT to do the update without your authorizing it. It is one of the options.
Regards
