Re: Apple "Mac" event next Tuesday.
Here is my extreme prediction:
Jobs announces that Apple Inc. is stopping all Macintosh hardware production and licensing the OS out to the likes of Dell and HP. With the iPod and iPhone being the main focus of Apple Inc. from now on.
My wishful thinking prediction:
Apple offers a consumer based tower for under $1000 with industry standard parts.
My realistic prediction:
Apple tweaked the iMac a bit, upped the specs and drops the mini.

Re: Apple "Mac" event next Tuesday.
Fake, unless Apple decides the power brick will be outside the computer again, rather than inside. Also, heat is going to be a huge problem.
I've decided that the computer does not belong attached directly to the display (like in the G5/Intel iMac). This makes movement of the display severely limited and the computer much more difficult as a whole to balance. There's really no reason at all for the monitor to have such severely limited movement at this point.
Oh well. I think I have very low expectations now of the new iMac since I've seen that mock-up, even if it is fake. Come on, Apple. Impress me.
Please.

I like the G4 iMac most of all... maybe apple will do the same thing again? God that would be awesome!

My ideal announcement would be a consumer based tower, a revamped iMac, and a small form factor laptop. In addition, instead of killing off the mini, rebranding it as an Apple TV with an improved form factor and enhanced media capabilities.
In reality, I expect a new iMac in an alluminum casing and maybe a new laptop.

Two new iMacs, with 20 and 24 inch screens, and entirely covered in brushed metal (!) plus the previously hinted new keyboard design and a slightly slimmer enclosure. Even more surprising, our source says the iMacs are shipping with a 2.4GHz Intel Penryn chip. Intel's first 45-nm CPU was originally slated to ship at the end of the year, and it's not clear that Apple could get enough parts to actually build these puppies before October, so take this with a grain of salt. The machines might ship with the dual-core Conroe part instead.
Three new Apple Displays at 20, 24, and 32 inches. These are supposed to have an iSight camera built in.
The Mac Pro will get a speed bump as the Xeon/Woodcrest chips are swapped out for Penryn chips, running at a brisk 2.4, 3.0, and 3.33GHZ.
Lastly, the long-expected end of life for the Mac Mini may finally come around as the machine is expected to be dropped

So, not to nag, but does anyone know if touch screens are available in high quality/high resolution at around the same price as conventional LCDs?

A Cinema Display with a camera and the words "iMac" photoshopped onto it.

Re: Apple "Mac" event next Tuesday.
I'm not new to the Mac scene (a little rusty maybe) but I am new to the product line and must say as I've been planning to purchase a new Mac (first new one since 1995, 4th Mac since 1995... two others I've had have been second hand), the word of new releases has stirred me up big time. I love the Mini (I was planning on getting THAT one) but everyone thinks it's going to make like T-Rex and that's a bummer. Seems like everyone thinks the iMac is going to be the champion here in the "el cheap-o" line of Macs. It almost seems like I can hear a faint cry of celebration from a lot of camps. Why celebrate the death of a pretty groovy computer, let alone a Mac? Do you guys really think the Mini is gonna bite it? The suspense is killing ME! LOL! See, I'm on a tight budget with buying a Mac and if I have to shell out $1000+ for a new Mac, I'm just gonna hang it up. Why must I have a new Mac? Well, duh, why not? New is new. Besides, I've been a slave to the Windblows machine for the past three years. I need these shackles busted!
And I'm really hankerin' for one of those Intel Mac jobs. Okay, I'm done babbling to myself.

I figure that the iMac won't look exactly like the cinema displays... they have to draw some notable differences. The average person needs to be able to tell - at a glance - which product they're looking at.

Re: Apple "Mac" event next Tuesday.
Um that iMac picture. Interesting that the Leopard build is the newest developer release and not the WWDC one that has been around for a while. If it's fake they've got access to the developer builds...
Edit: Ok after looking in photoshop, I don't know. If it's fake they've spent some time on it. Definitely fake if you assume it has a full size HD.
Also on the external power, yay. Can't wait to see.
