Re: How old is your current main system and how long have you had it?

I have two main machines that are used about equally thanks to my KVM, both are due for a replacement in the form of an Intel based Mac sometime soon:

Quicksilver G4

Speed: 733Mhz
Memory: 768 Mb
Video: Radeon 9000
Internal Storage: 2x 250Gb HD, DVD-RW
OS: 10.4

Age: I have had it for four years as of this September.
Pro: It was free, runs OS X, stable, damn quiet and cool (silenced it with fan and PSU edits)
Con: Pokey, no bootcamp

Athlon 64 generic box
Speed: 2.15 Ghz
Memory: 1.5 Gb
Video: GeForce 6600 GT
Internal Storage: RAID 0 (2x320Gb), 500Gb
OS: XP Pro (MCE), Ubuntu, Novell SUSE 10

Age: Three years and a few months.
Pro: Works most of the time, fairly cheap, speedy drives
Con: It turns itself off at random from time to time, makes a lot of hot air, noisy at times (mainly when expelling hot air).

Re: How old is your current main system and how long have you had it?

At home I just finished putting together my Athy 64 4800 X2, 2Gb Ram, Dual boot to XP and Vista Business, Pair of 7800GTXs in SLI & half a TB in drive space. All liquid cooled by a kit from Danger Den.

It's been up and running for about a month now. Tho I had most of the parts sitting a box for awhile. Just waiting for the need to tear the machine apart to add the upgrades. Before that it was a P4 3.2 that was 2 and a half years old. Those parts have gone to the kids.

At work it's a Dell XPS M170 laptop. I've had it for a year now.

Before the P4 it was my DP500 G4 which has since been retired.

The kids up until they got the P4 were using a PPC 6400 with a Voodoo 2 v-card upgrade. My old machine before the DP500.

As they say... smurf rolls downhill. wink

Re: How old is your current main system and how long have you had it?

My main system is my MacBook.  It's a little over a year old now.  It's the base white model, 1.83GHz CD with 2GB of RAM and an 80GB HD.

I built a Vista box about six months ago and just upgraded the video card.  But I use it mostly for games, not much else.  I have an old 2.8GHz P4 that I use to occasionally tinker with Ubuntu.

When Penryn ships, I may consider upgrading to a MBP and consolidating to a single system.

I wonder what percentage of people really play graphic intensive games on their computer.

I sure don't, and that has certainly saved me a lot of money and waste of perfectly good computers.

Re: How old is your current main system and how long have you had it?

I have a Digital Audio G4.  Mine started off life as a 733 MHz model with a CD-RW drive.

I've since upgraded it as follows:
1 GB RAM
2 internal HDs, one 80, one 40 GB
1 External HD, 250GB
GeForce4Ti 4600 AGP Graphics connected to 20" Widescreen 1680x1050 LCD Display
ATI Radeon 7600 PCI connected to 17" 1280x1024 Display
iSub (and two generic speakers, which were once four, until I blew one and three sounded ridiculous)
1.467 GHz G4 upgrade card from OWC (considering picking up a dualie 1.8 card in the somewhat near future)
250MB Internal Zip Drive
Dual Layer DVD±R to replace the built-in CD-RW
External FireWire CD-RW (12x8x48)
USB 2.0 PCI Card
CH Products Yoke and Pedals (for X-Plane)
AirPort Card (the tower serves as my apartment's router, allows my roommate, laptop, and tv to connect, and contrary to what Apple itself says, 802.11b works fine for streaming video)

I used to have a SCSI card plugged in to run my Jaz Drive as well, but the SCSI card stopped working when I went from Panther to Tiger (it caused boot-time kernel panics).

There are years of life left in my tower yet.  Expandability is a huge plus.

I even have the Apple Pro Speakers that connect to the digital port on the tower, but some moron at Apple didn't think to consider that a 3ft cable is not long enough to connect speakers to a tower on the floor.  Griffin used to make an extension cable but it's been discontinued and I can't find it anywhere.

Re: How old is your current main system and how long have you had it?

My main machine is Odin, a dual 1 GHz G4 PowerMac (Quicksilver 2002), which I purchased new on sale just as the MDDs were coming out, so it's  right around five years old.  I've upgraded the memory to 1.5 gig, added more drives, and a SCSI card so I could use some of my older drives.  It's still got the stock GeForce 4 MX video card.  Unfortunately, the CPU fan started failing a few months ago, and may have caused some damage to the CPUs before I noticed & replaced the fan, since it now has more of a tendency to overheat. sad  I'll try to keep it cool & running as long as I can, though.

My previous main computer, which is still usually on (running server-type stuff), is  Thor, a 400 MHz G4 PowerMac (Sawtooth).  I don't remember exactly when I purchased this one, but judging by the "create" date on the original HD, it's just under eight years old.  It's got 320 meg in it, and judging by the DIMM sizes, I probably added 2*128 meg to the base 64.  Other than the addition of more hard drives, and a "pro-style" third-party keyboard, it's otherwise stock.

I have other computers, but the only other one that is on more than once in a blue moon (& isn't my PDA) is my NT laptop, Loki (the trickster in Norse mythology), which is an 800 MHz Sony Vaio AMD Duron running NT 5 (it came with that 9x abomination "Me", but I quickly remidied that).  I purchased it as a floor model several years ago, but I don't remember exactly when.  I have it mainly to run the occasional pesky non-Mac software (& use when at the Parental Units), but both of it's batteries have failed.  Since new batteries are around $100, I'm considering just getting a new laptop.  I just wish the new Mac "pro" laptops were cheaper, but I'll probably just end up getting a $600-$700 one & de-Vista-ing it.

Is Odin from mythology as well? Just wondering. I really should read up on mythology some time.

Anyway, my computer's about 2 years old. PowerBook 15", last edition before the final resolution increase, and then the Intel Macs came out. Interestingly enough, my computer will easily last me 6 years, as in November (I believe) I'll be gone for 4 odd years. So that'll be WAY longer than average, and then after that I should easily get another 2 years out of it before it needs to be replaced. Of course, by then there should be some amazing PB replacement that I'll feel absolutely MUST be mine, so who knows...

I love my PowerBook.

Odin is the chief god in norse/germanic mythology, synonymous with Woden, Wotan.

Quad G5, got it a few months after they came out.  To be perfectly honest, I'm pushing it to its limit... it's a wee bit long in the tooth for what I do.  I love it, but damn...

Re: How old is your current main system and how long have you had it?

My main PC I've had for just over 8 months now, although it's hardly the same PC that I started out with:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
6 GB of RAM
nVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS
2 TB of HDD storage
Trends Audio UD-10

It used to be a Conroe E6400 with a 7800 GT until my Mom's PC died so I donated my processor and motherboard. Realistically, the only thing left that belongs to the PC I started out with is the case, Scythe tower cooler, power supply, HDDs, optical drives and RAM. So far, I'm very content with it. It's quite fast, although realistically not as fast as I thought it'd be running Vista 64-bit edition....

Re: How old is your current main system and how long have you had it?

My current system is a 15" G4 iMac that was bought back in December 2002. It has been upgraded extensively over the years. Stock it was,

256MB ram to 768MB
40GB HD to a 400 GB HD
Combo Drive to a 16X DL Lightscribe DVD Burner
Airport

Sometime this year I am looking to get a new system since running Photoshop on it is getting really slow.

Yes, for several years now, I've used names form Norse mythology for my computers, partly because it's a large part of my ancestry, and also because it's less known then Greek / Roman mythology.  I won't bother digging up the names of computers I don't fire up all the time, but my iPod is named Edda.

An iSight iMac G5 20"(2.1 GHz PPC G5,  1.5 GB RAM, 250 GB HD), is my main machine, but the SuperDrive is gettig persnickity.

I'll be getting a MBP soon, but I'm not sure how it's going to fit into the family yet.

Main Computer is my two week old white MacBook C2D, baseline model.

Before that it was a Mini CD 1.83ghz which I got about four months ago (mom has that for her work now.) And before that it was a Power Macintosh G4 466 (Digital Audio) for like three or four years.

My main computer is a homebuilt box, running a dual boot of Ubuntu linux and windows. I have had it for maybe 4-5 months.
I also have a 2 year old powerbook, which is my only computer here with me in germany. I was able to ssh into my linux box back home, but now my router has gone haywire, so that is no longer an option.

17" iMac G5, ambient light sensor,2 Ghz, 1G ram, 250G HD. Bought it new from Apple.com in June of '05. Currently having issues with the HD.
Next most used is a Dell something-or-other that has a 2 gig P4, I think.
Then I have my old G3 iMac DV (Ruby red), that isn't really doing anything right now.
I gave my Performa 6360 to my nephew to trade. It was dead beyond repair.
