Folding on a Macbook or Macbook Pro?

Anyone Fold, running their Macbook or Macbook Pro at 100% all the time (when on AC power)?

How well do they handle it?  Do they get louder?  Unreasonably hot?  Cause any issues?

Any computer I buy is going to be running all it's CPUs at 100%, 100% of the time, darn it!

Re: Folding on a Macbook or Macbook Pro?

I'm folding full time right now on a MBP CD 2GHz 2GB RAM. The fans run pretty much constantly and it gets a little warmer than normal. Unless your normal is compressing video! It gets noticably hotter if you fold while working on other things or just surfing the web.

I also fold on a new Aluminum iMac 24" 2.8GHz 4GB RAM. The iMac folds about 2 - 2.5 times faster and you hear very little fan noise. It gets about as hot as when doing anything graphic intense. The upper 25% of the backside seems always to be hot to the touch.

Re: Folding on a Macbook or Macbook Pro?

So long as the subject of folding 100% of the time is the topic, is there a chance that running my CPUs on my desktop Mac Pro 100% of the time will burn out my fans prematurely? the reason I ask is because my Mac was down for 2 weeks having a fan replaced, and I was wondering if running the Mac at full power all the time may have killed the fan. I prefer to think that the fan was just defective, because I don't recall hearing anybody complaining about FAH killing their fans. Anyhoo, glad to be a part of this fine team, everybody keep up the good work nod

Re: Folding on a Macbook or Macbook Pro?

I fold full-time on a Mac Pro and haven't noticed any extra fan noise. Keep in mind that the fans are always spinning whether you are running folding@home or not, so I wouldn't say that folding@home will shorten fan life.

Re: Folding on a Macbook or Macbook Pro?

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it at all on a Mac Pro.  If THOSE monsters can't handle it... big_smile

I placed an order for a MBP a week and a half ago-still not sure I'm not going to cancel, I'm getting nervous.

Still haven't decided if I'm going to fold on it.  Normally I'd never question that, but with the way the MBP is designed, and the sealed hard drive and things...

Re: Folding on a Macbook or Macbook Pro?

I will say that I don't fold on my MacBook. Not for fear of wearing anything out, but just because of the extra fan noise. I often do video encoding with ffmpeg, and that also causes the fan to run faster, but the video encoding is not for more than an hour or so.

Well...technically it's so loud at work that I won't be able to hear it anyway, so maybe it doesn't matter big_smile

Re: Folding on a Macbook or Macbook Pro?

Just a short note about folding on a MacBook Pro ...

I purchased an iLap stand and have my MacBook sitting on that with the lid open. This has made a huge difference. It stays much cooler and the fans are hardly noticable. When I want to use the MacBook for other heavy duty work or run off the battery, I just pause F@H until I'm done. big_smile

Also, it takes about 35 - 40 hrs to run a protein the same size as one running in 25 hrs on my new iMac. Not bad considering the MacBook is 32bit CPU and only 2GHz vs 64bit and 2.8GHz. smile
