I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08
Immediate update is showing for iPhoto (10.2 MB Intel), among a couple of others (Aperture [129 MB] and Front Row [5.2 MB]). Glad I upgraded my line to Fios.

Just noticed the iPhoto icon seems a little different/nicer (I think they changed the camera icon, nothing big).

What do you think of it overall? Is it worth the update?

Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08
Yes, so far I highly recommend it, however, the only thing I've played with so far is iPhoto and its insanely cool and extremely fast on my MacBook Pro, much more so than 06. The features are cooler than you think. Events rocks as well as the toggle feature. It's hard to explain in writing so I suggest you play with it.
It also looks like iDVD will encode at a high quality, although I haven't obviously checked this out yet. But if this works as advertised (Professional Quality setting) I won't have to use Toast any longer to make my videos look nice.

Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08
Just noticed that iPhoto now places movies in a movies folder instead of scattered all in with your photos. This is just one example as there seems to be a lot of organizational features on top of the useful eye candy that is REALLY sweet in iPhoto.
I use Final Cut Express so iMovie will not be used much. I'll still check it out later though.

How does it organize them on the hard drive? I always found the current way it saves them to be highly aggrevating when trying to open pics in photoshop. Have they developed a less messy way of organizing pics?

Looks like the old file path: Users/Pictures/iPhoto Library. The weird thing is I can't see the individual photo files unless I use Spotlight. Instead in iPhoto Library there is the iPhoto icon and when you click on it it launches iPhoto which is messed up. I usually drag the photo I want to edit directly out of iPhoto onto my desktop anyway, but this new system seems f-up.

WOW! iMovie's layout has been changed 100%! It will take most some adjustment time to say the least.

iPhoto has a setting under preferences to be able to open photos in an external editor like photoshop right in iPhoto. When you edit in an external program, iPhoto saves the edit to your library, saves the original and has the revert options, all just as if you edited it in iPhoto.

Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08
1st impressions of iMovie is its interface has now become way overly complicated. I could use 06 iMovie without even thinking about it. This new version is very un-user friendly - frustratingly so

I've just got to get past the old-school, drill down through the finder to find files like I've been doing since forever. Sounds like the new iPhoto is a definite improvement.
An iWeb question now. When using your own domain, does it have it's own FTP client for non .mac websites? I actually have three different, unrelated sites I maintain (only one through iWeb right now), and would like something a little handier than "publish to folder" and an external FTP for updating.

Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08
I don't use iWeb.
I can't emphasize how horrible iMovie's interface is. Where's the trash? Where's my Timeline? How come I can't seem to find how to fully control my audio adjustments like the prior version (fading sound in/out/up/down). TERRIBLE! I just had to do a Spotlight search to delete a trial movie as when saving it would only give me the option to "Save to hard drive" which eneded up being User/Movies and a file created by iMovie in this folder. WTF?

Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08
I think I already said I did. Why do you ask this question when I've already answered it?
I also can't see how to extend transitions beyond the default like you could in 06. T
There seems to be way less control compared to 06 and it's way less intuitive. Great job Apple.
I will again state that iPhoto is awesome though. So basically I paid $79 for an iPhoto and iDVD upgrade as these two programs actually look like some thought went into them. Although I use FCE 85% of the time, that other 15% of the time when I do use iMovie will be painful enough where I will no longer utilize it at all.

Okay, I got that figured out but I don't like it. Again, waaaay less control compared to the old time line which was similar to FCE that had the audio controls, etc.

It looks to me from the pics online that they're abandoning the sorta-kinda-quasi-pro feel of iMovie in favor of a Pinnacle Studio type video-for-dummies interface. I thought iMovie had a lot of potential as a basic editor, but it's more of a clip assembly program now. I wonder of GeeThree and all the other plug in makers are going to have trouble porting their wares over for this.
The new iMovie will be handy if you can import completed quicktime movies from FCP into it and use it to encode to multiple formats for web/youtube/ipod/appletv though. I'm assuming that it's youtube export function will be optimized for their new
I'm also curious to see what "pro encoding" is like in the new iDVD.

Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08
Would it be possible to somehow keep iMovie 06 as well, if they are so different? After all, if you've paid for both, you should have the right to keep them if they are two different apps and not just a few improments.
I am still bummed by the Tiger requirement. I don't need is as desperately on my macbook as i do on my older Powermac G5, which still has Panther and the iLife 4 on it. So now I have to wait till october anyway.
