Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08

I really like iPhoto, but I made a quick movie with iMovie and found it so much harder to work with. After half an hour I kinda getting somewhere, but then it crashed on me like all the past versions love to do. I did finish it, it seemed to auto save a few minutes back. Overall, the way it handles clips makes me feel very not in control hmm And it took me 5 minutes to find where to get rid of the volume on a clip.

Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08

I think I may skip this one. I would only be buying it for iPhoto and to be honest I'm getting kinda sick of iPhoto and am thinking of upgrading to lightroom or aperture.

I might have used iweb but I'd rather not spend $80 use that one app.

I can't recommend Lightroom enough, especially if you are shooting RAW images.  It is fantastic, and IMO superior to Aperture, although many people feel differently.

Okay, I got that figured out but I don't like it. Again, waaaay less control compared to the old time line which was similar to FCE that had the audio controls, etc.

It looks to me from the pics online that they're abandoning the sorta-kinda-quasi-pro feel of iMovie in favor of a Pinnacle Studio type video-for-dummies interface.   I thought iMovie had a lot of potential as a basic editor, but it's more of a clip assembly program now.  I wonder of GeeThree and all the other plug in makers are going to have trouble porting their wares over for this.

The new iMovie will be handy if you can import completed quicktime movies from FCP into it and use it to encode to multiple formats for web/youtube/ipod/appletv though.  I'm assuming that it's youtube export function will be optimized for their new

I'm also curious to see what "pro encoding" is like in the new iDVD.

The last version of Pinnacle Studio I used (8) was pretty much exactly like the iMovie of old.

does iPhoto 08 close when you click on the red X or does it just hide the way iTunes does?

I just watched the demo video.
Looks pretty worthy to me.
shrug
My wife uses iLife & .mac and she was giddy watching the demo.
I designed/maintain my own site/domain but really appreciate what this software has done for my wife and several of my friends.
. . . and basic .mac storage is now 10gb.
Rock on iLifers.

BTW I've used lightroom exclusively since beta and it's the best thing out there hands down (made my living with CS/Bridge till then)

Re: Just upgraded to iLife 08

I've just put in an order for iLife8 and the new big keyboard. I'll probably only have any use for iPhoto8 and Garageband but I still think it'll be worth it since the changes in iPhoto seems pretty useful. Besides, I haven't upgraded iLife since '5 which I got with my G5 when I bought it in late 2005

I still only have 512 MB, why is that?

EDIT: Never mind, it's coming later.

I'm not sure if you know this, but you can adjust the amount of your .Mac space allocated to the iDisk versus the amount allocated to your email storage.  Right now it looks like you're using the default setting of splitting it down the middle for each, which I think is silly.  I pushed my email storage down to the bare minimum, which gave me a lot more room on my iDisk.

I really don't understand this trend towards monstrously oversized email boxes these days.  I can keep all my email in 20MB of space.

I kept mine.
rename your 06 iLife apps before you upgrade.
they will work just fine in addition to the new version install.

I just use GMail wink

Except sometimes google feels it needs to have a hand in preventing... I don't know what.

It won't let me send .exe files, even if I rar or zip them.  Stupid google.....

Find a friend that bought iLife but doesn't use iWeb, and delete it from there computer and install it onto yours.

No way does that violate the terms of use of having it installed on one machine.

WOW!

when you create an iPhoto gallery, the online photos can be flipped over to reveal information about the photo itself! really really cool!

FWIW, here's my gallery in progress!

Have you tried Aperture, FoJ?

I find it works far easier and more intuitively than Lightroom, and its easy to set up to pop the photos into CS3 when I need more editing horespower than Aperture has (ie: the spot removal tool in aperture sucks ass).

I tried the first two betas of Lightroom, and just didnt dig it... then tried the Aperture 1.5 demo and went to the bookstore and bought a copy the next day.

I want to know more about this.  Is there a timeline like in '06, or isn't there?  What control, exactly, is lost?  I'm baffled why Apple would take the software so far backwards.

Lightroom is fast, has a brilliantly designed interface and gives far superior control of your color. (the raw processing controls are no comparison actually)

It is too damn slow.  Anyone with half assed photoshop chops could make those thumbnails load a lot faster.  Complete bandwidth wasting IMO. shrug

Looks great!

Put some video up if you have any, please.  I'm curious to see what some non-Apple web gallery video looks like.

No, it's out of beta now, you have to pay for it.  If you are a student though, you can find it for $100.  Otherwise I think it's $200.

Look back at my posts. iMovie 08 is much less intuitive and there is much less control. Stick w/06 iMovie and upgrade to iDVD and iPhoto 08 if you can.

AGAIN, iMovie 08 is a horror show. In fact, I will go on to say its the worst upgrade that I can remember from Apple. Its that BAD!
