let's do this again: tipping
While waiting for my bar exam results I've decided to pick up a few shifts doing what I did in part for about 10 years...waiting tables.
By and large, most people get it. However, tonight I had a situation that particularly pissed me off. I was waiting on a couple. They ordered appetizers, entreés, desserts, and several drinks.
When I came by to pick up their check, I knew there would be trouble. The guy had to prompt his lady to come up with a few dollars from her purse. Upon counting the cash, they had handed me 50 bucks on a $49-something tab. I dropped off their change, knowing I wasn't going to get anything.
As they got up to leave, the woman reached for the check presenter. Wait....had I misjudged them? Nope....she dumped the remaining change into her purse. They said "thanks" on their way out.
Here's what I have to say about people who don't tip: You have no business eating at a full-service restaurant. None. However, if you insist upon doing so, you should at least have the decency to warn your server at the beginning that you don't plan on tipping them anything.
Please remember: I live in the United States. I work in the United States. In the United States, it is customary to tip your server when you dine out. For some reason, these threads always bring out sanctimonious non-americans who live in countries where tipping is not customary, complaining that servers don't deserve to be tipped anything. That's wonderful if tipping isn't obligatory where you live. It is here.

Well, when my WHOLE internship program (200 people?) had our dinner together at the Heidelberg Cultural Brewery, we even passed around a hat for a collective tip for all the servers, even though it was not customary, just as thanks for putting up with all of us American and Canadian smurfs.

No tipping in my country. We also round off ALL prices. No messy cents. Come to our side.

Sucks to be you working where you do, eh? Surely you of all the people would appreciate the irony of relying on an obligatory gratuity.

I tip if the service is super special, but if the waiter or waitress doesn't seem to give a smurf about their job, I don't bother. If you want a tip you had better work for it. Just because it is customary, doesn't mean I have to do it.

Re: let's do this again: tipping
I hate it when you have several people who help during the course of your dining.
Example: one person who places the chips/breadsticks/etc on your table and keeps them refilled, one person (the waitperson) who takes the drink order and your food order, another person who brings the actual entrees out of the kitchen to your table and finally the same waitperson will come by to collect the check.
Who the hell gets what percentage of the tip? They all contributed. But of course only the "main" waitperson will claim the tip.
This happens at Chili's quite often with the exception of the chips/breadsticks thing.

Yeah! Damn those people for trying to keep their jobs!
I'll never penalize somebody for doing their job, even if I may disagree with what they are doing. (please, for the love of god, do not godwin that statement, dan. )

Oh, I see! So if Hitler were waiting your table you'd tip him 15%? F-ing nazi!
I will only NOT tip if the service is exceptionally bad or if I get a waiter who would obviously like to be any-smurfing-where else than doing his/her job at the time. I've done the barista thing for years and you think I wanted to be there every second I was? No, but I NEVER let the customer know that.

I enjoy tipping waiters.
I like the sound they make when they hit the floor.

Yes, I will indeed damn them. Not for trying to keep their jobs, but because they are participating in a perpetuation of unconstitutional federal power.

I wish you'd guys understand, though, that our people aren't raking it in.
Out there I'm sure there's a particular minimum wage that's adhered to; but at Red Lobster for example, waitresses get like $1.80 an hour and told that any tip money they get gets turned in and takes care of the rest when they divide it all up.
It's not acceptable so I don't eat at establishments that handle it like that, but I think someone that has to deal with the bullsmurf I see and is able to keep a smile on their face and treat each customer separately and like new should hit $10 an hour. I see 15% as a guideline for a group, because when it's just me or I'm out with a lady, I always tip more (which is a BOON if they see what you leave on the table post-tab if they've ever had to do waitressin' themselves).
That's all well and good, but I don't get "tip" jars at Baskin-Robbins or Starbucks. It's like... I'm paying a premium for this product, is that not enough?

Don't take it out on the waiter though. Come on, they're only trying to make ends meet. If they don't know you, how do they not know that you are an undercover cop trying to bust them?

But Dan, they're just the little people, they don't make policies, they just get fired when they're not followed. Wouldn't making a bigger better statement be not giving the business any business at all? Even if they do eventually learn that you don't tip if you're carded then they memorize and focus on you and cater to your desire rather than understand why's for the stand you make, and so far as it goes they could care less.
You'll miss the days when you got carded, babyface.

If you are referring to income tax, I know that and you're correct. However the feds have more guns than I do. The only way to fix this one is to elect politicians who will abolish the IRS.

Well I'm sorry, but that makes you a pretty terrible (and ignorant) person.
Servers face criminal penalties for serving underage minors (including jail time).
This is not to mention that they could be sued in a civil suit for serving alcohol to a minor if that minor later injures or kills someone after having drank ANYTHING at all.
Shame on you.
