30 seconds of sitting around with no food and an empty beer bottle is enough to make me not tip the waiter/waitress. Sorry, but that's the way it goes. Keep my beer coming and you'll get a tip. If I gotta wait, too bad and I don't really care if I can drink beer faster than almost any human alive. This whole town knows that to begin with, so accomodate me already.

I usually just double the tax (comes out to 17-18%) and round up.

The same, it's just never something I think about doing, since I'm hellbent on trying to get out the door before I'm charged for another night.

I do tip skycaps $10 every two bags, though. Maybe I'm just paranoid that if I don't tip enough that it won't get there?

Oh, and FWIW, you never have to worry about tipping your cellular representative, but if you want to do something nice for us if we've done well, at least take the freakin' data package or other vertical service for a month and then drop it. Our mere existence depends more on attach rate of those services more than it does volume of sales, so if you've ever seen respectful, nice and knowledgeable associates shuffle out of your local store every 60 days, now you know why.

Obviously I'm rarely offered a tip because of the way the industry is, unless I'm doing some sort of unsanctioned repair work. Even then I'm sort of honor-bound to refuse it. One guy gave me and an employee Tennessee Titans tickets, though, which I just let the employee have so that she could take her husband.

I'm surprised at how many people really base it on the level of service they get. I just double the tip amount, and maybe round it up if I'm paying cash.

The basic 15-20% tip is just part of the cost of going out to eat. It's ridiculous to consider it some sort of "extra" that the waiter has to work hard for.

It's nice to tip more on the occasions when the service is really good, or you're feeling extra generous, but that's just cheap to tip less just because the service was so-so.

I don't think I've ever had service that was so bad that I felt that it warranted no tip.

The entire concept behind making wait staff work for tips is all about ensuring they work their asses off for the customer.
