Mac Mini

Did no one else see that the Mac Mini was upgraded to Core 2 Duo?

Re: Mac Mini

Haha, nice.

I'm still bugged that there is no $500 model. That was one of the biggest +'s of the mini when it was first launched.

Eh, can't win 'em all. Guess I'll just see what they roll out next year...

Lemme head off some of the elitists' comments.

"Why on Earth did you buy that weak overpriced piece of junk."

wink wink

PS. Hint: answer is because it's what was wanted and/or best served one's needs at the time.

Re: Mac Mini

Yeah for dumping in an even crappier GPU than the R9200 they sure got away from that $500 sell point easily without anyone noticing the loss. Guess they figure as long as it says Core Duo people will be willing to shell out another $100 for Intel poodoo.

Re: Mac Mini

Integrated graphics work just fine for non-gamers.  I'm actually surprised that Apple no longer offers an integrated config of the iMac.  My guess is that they either wanted to move the iMac upscale, or since the new iMacs use the Santa Rosa chipset with the X3100 core and the drivers for that chipset aren't quite mature that they chose to go with a low-end dedicated chip instead.

I have a MacBook (I do my gaming on a Windows desktop with a dedicated card) and for everyday use, it works just fine.  The upside is less heat and better battery life.  I would also point out that pretty much any PC in the mini's price range will have integrated graphics.

As for being crappier than the 9200, in some ways yes, in others no.  The 9200 sucks for HD.  It also won't support Core Image at all - the 950 does.  For most business users and home use (email, photos, etc.) integrated is less expensive and works just fine.  For gamers, it sucks.  But even then, you can't really game on a low-end system and you'll want more than a budget card.

Re: Mac Mini

Indeed

Anything that requires a significantly powerfully video card tends to require a significantly more powerful CPU and higher RAM.

I don't think you can buy ANY Apple product without getting some of that.  wink

I can't wait.  I've got a nice new screen waiting for it when it arrives, an external drive for storing more stuff, and the same great keyboard I've been using for years (needs a cleaning, though).

Like you said, all I needed was a head to go with it, and that's what I just bought.  Way cheaper than an iMac.

Re: Mac Mini

To be fair, Dell's low-end systems come with 1GB of RAM (more or less required for Vista) and all but the cheapest model have dual-core CPUs.

All the minis are Dual Core as well.

Re: Mac Mini

Nice upgrades for a media PC. I would've really liked to see the new integrated video card from Intel and perhaps a slight size bump to accomodate a 3.5" HDD before I consider it an entry level contender. Still waiting on my midrange tower though so I don't have to jump through hoops with Project X86..

Re: Mac Mini

Considerig buying it as a second computer + that new cool looking wireless keyboard (looks like its made for the Mac Mini). And I also love its low power consumption very much.

''Off 0-2 Watts
Booting 30-40 Watts
Idle 25 Watts
Sleep 3-5 Watts, almost always 3 Watts''

That is what "oui" means.

Also, I think the Mini's have always included a DVI/VGA adapter. My G4 mini came with one, anyways.

Yes, we saw (them).

And they always did include the adaptor.

Re: Mac Mini

I did see them, and I hope some of the older Intel ones show up on CraigsList for a little cheaper now, so I can finally justify buying one as a Carputer...

Don't forget to check the Apple re-furbished area.  I'm sure it'll have great deals on the previous models for a month or two at least.

The GMA 950 is better than the R9200.  I have both, so I know first-hand.  I've found this to be true for games and video alike, and let's also remember that the 9200 doesn't do all those cool shader effects.  However, that doesn't justify its presence in the mini, but the mini's competitors use GMA as well, and similar configurations tend to cost more than Apple's, too.

In terms of hardware, mini-PCs in general are a pretty lousy value compared to towers and even the toaster-sized Shuttle boxes.  Now, there are some people who need/prefer the mini's size, but the mini's real purpose (IMO) is to whet the appetites of PC users who aren't satisfied with Apple's desktop offerings, but will settle for a cheap Mac to compliment their PC towers.  That's why I bought one in the PPC era.  But thanks to the Hackintosh e1337, I no longer have to compromise.
