Does it upset anyone else...

That the articles in the magazine are available for free online before I even get my issue...  Sometimes it just doesn't feel special to actually get the magazine sad

Re: Does it upset anyone else...

this rag has gone so far down hill that there is almost no hope for it anymore. I have a subscription and don't even bother reading the magazine anymore. it comes in the mail and I set it on my coffee table for a week or two then pitch it into the recycling bin. often times without reading a single article in it's entirety. there is just no personality to it anymore.

it doesn't faze me that the articles are online I don't read them anyway. shrug

No, I actually wish that every article was available online as long as there was a waiting period of say a month between when the subscribers get the mag and the articles are available online. If they did this then I would never have to save a magazine.

Though I understand why I also wonder if a suspicious brown envelope would be better.confused  At least you only get them in one plastic bag, which I do now also. I used to get them in double bags which really got me wondering what they where thinking since the second plastic bag only protected the first one and included the adresstag.

Re: Does it upset anyone else...

Yeah, I recognize the 'double plastic bag' feature. (I live in the Netherlands, guess it's a international subscribers thing.)

But to stick to the subject: I don't mind articles are also available on the web, but you'd expect the printed articles to be better than the free web ones.

And since the web is here still, why not take advantage of it and - for example - add how-to video's to the printed articles. Errata and user-feedback could be better via the site too. Give every article a forum-page or somthing!

Re: Does it upset anyone else...

I haven't enjoyed the magazine since the big change, other than the fact that the paper quality changed. (I work in the print industry, and I appreciate nice paper.) HOWEVER - The content has changed in a way that no longer holds my interest.

I have not renewed my subscription. I do not plan to.

It is now one giant ad. With ads mixed in. (On nice paper).

Re: Does it upset anyone else...

the nice paper is there to trick you into thinking that the magazine is good. I honestly have yet to read an article in Mac|Life that I have liked. course towards the end of MacAddict the writing was pretty crap. I used to always buy a copy of the mag anytime that I would fly but lately I haven't even wanted to.

ah well, it was good for a few years anyway. shame it couldn't continue.

Re: Does it upset anyone else...

The biggest disappointment for me is that the mag went from a technical one to a artsy fartsy designer's mag.  I am sick of flipping through the thing and finding article after article about photoshop, garage band, FCP, etc.  I don't deal with any of that, so most of the mag is a waste of paper to me.  I also haven't renewed my subscription, and I don't really plan to.

I'm going to have to call bullsmurf on this. This type of response makes me sick. I can't stand people that state things as fact when they are blatant lies in the hopes that no one will challenge them. Let's take a look at the features covered this year:

1) iPhone
2) tips on improving web surfing
3) choosing the best bag for your laptop
4) Web 2.0
5) Best software for kids
6) article about Apple Store Genius'
7) Remote control of Macs
8) Upgrading your Mac
9) Security
10) Using Yahoo! Pipes
11) Creating and using your own Wiki
12) Apple design
13) Inside Photoshop CS3
14) Speeding up your old Mac
15) blogging from your cell phone
16) intro to iPhone
17) watching TV on your Mac
18) Aperture
19) upgrading an iMac's CPU
20) using iMovie's filters
21) Customize your Mac
22) Camcorder explanation and reviews
23) Mac icons
24) creating a RAID

Out of 24 we have a whopping 3 that fit into your categories. So, I guess this proves that you are complaining about a magazine that you haven't actually picked up in who knows how long. Next time you want to criticize something you might want to have some actual knowledge about it. You sound like a politician (I won't say from which party because this isn't minithink wink ).

Re: Does it upset anyone else...

Sorry to burst your little bubble frankly, but I have gotten every damn issue since the second year of publication.  I have read every issue from cover to cover, many several times.  The mag used to be more tech based, covering things like upgrading your mac, the iBorg, making flashlights from firewire cables, converting an Apple Mic to a pre-amp, etc.  I can count on one hand the number of good, informative tech articles in the last few years.  I am sick of reading reviews that base a computer's performance on Photoshop.  Those numbers mean absolutely nothing to me.  "OOOOOOH! Look!  This computer can do a gaussian blur on this gargantuan image 2.25 seconds faster than last year's model!!!11ONE111"

Once Maclife starts doing unbiased reviews with more of their conclusions drawn on real life situations, I might consider resubscribing.  Reviewing a Macbook and giving a con as being poor at photoshop is not real-life.  Anyone who is planning on using high-horsepower apps like Photoshop, FCP, etc are going to buy a Macbook Pro, Mac Pro, etc, not an entry level laptop designed for college kids and grandmas.  It is good at surfing the net, typing papers, listening to music, basic photo editing with iPhoto, etc.  Its not a professional's machine.  They did this with the iBooks when they came out with the G4 version.  I laughed my ass off when they knocked it because it wasn't good at photoshop.  Well, DUH!  Its like trying to haul a fifth wheel camper with a S-10 pickup.

Re: Does it upset anyone else...

Oh, and to use your list you nicely printed out:

1) iPhone  don't have one, don't plan on getting one, don't really care about smart phones at all
2) tips on improving web surfing don't go on the web much anymore because I have too much work to do
3) choosing the best bag for your laptop  don't carry my laptop anywhere, and hardly ever use it anyway
4) Web 2.0  most of those things are useless in my book
5) Best software for kids  no kids, no plans for kids
6) article about Apple Store Genius' didn't tell much, the ones I have dealt with weren't very helpful, nearest apple store is over 200 miles away.
7) Remote control of Macs wouldn't have any use for this
8) Upgrading your Mac mildly interesting, but only deals with more current models; basically tells you to not bother
9) Security meh
10) Using Yahoo! Pipes why would I want to?
11) Creating and using your own Wiki  again, useless to me
12) Apple design look, another design article! I prefer my Antec server case to anything apple has put out in the last 10 years
13) Inside Photoshop CS3 the requisite Adobe suck-up articles
14) Speeding up your old Mac nothing here that I didn't already know, but some might find it useful.  More of this please.
15) blogging from your cell phone don't read them, don't want to
16) intro to iPhone again, I don't really care
17) watching TV on your Mac why?  I already have a TV I don't ever watch, and it has a screen 10x the size of my Macs
18) Aperture never used it, never will
19) upgrading an iMac's CPU somewhat techy, didn't give much info on it, could have had more detailed pics
20) using iMovie's filters I deleted iMovie as soon as I got my first mac with it on
21) Customize your Mac  don't we all already by just using it?
22) Camcorder explanation and reviews my camcorder is 12 years old, and it works fine for me
23) Mac icons meh
24) creating a RAID no need for it

Granted, someone who is a gadget freak and carries a laptop to do image, video, or audio editing may find tons of info, but it is worthless for me.  I can find the info faster online, and it usually has more depth to it.  The tech articles that are left are so shallow that they really don't cover much.  What happened to the multi-page spreads when the new models were released with the detailed tech specs of the machine and what all the stuff on the motherboard did?  Remember the release of the G3 processor?  It was covered for months and everyone had tons of articles on the processor, the new architecture etc.  Now we just get the marketing numbers and a glossed over view of the thing.  It just seems that people these days don't give a damn how the stuff works as long as it does.  I prefer to know the ins and outs of the stuff I am using so I have a better idea of how to use it more efficiently and how to troubleshoot when things go wrong.  MacAddict/Maclife seems to have followed the majority on this and don't print these articles anymore.  They can do as they please, but they are going to lose a lot of long-term subscribers over it.

It's not possible for you to burst my bubble when you are full of it. I gave you examples of all of the major articles from the inception of Mac|Life and you saw how few covered the topics you mentioned. I've been reading MacAddict since its inception and the tech based article you mention were in the mag but they were never a representation of the majority of articles. They were the exception. They may have been your favorite but I think your memory is altered based on your perspective instead of reality.

Just to prove what a bunch of crap your post is I looked at a MacBook review from the February 2007 issue. Here is the direct quote of the Cons: "Mediocre graphics performance."

Also, there is a reason why Photoshop performance is mentioned in almost every Mac review. It is because Photoshop is one of the most processor intensive tasks and it will give you a direct comparison to other models. So, it doesn't matter if you are going to be using Photoshop (I don't either) but if you use the same benchmark for every computer then you have a valid way to compare the speed of each. If they showed a Photoshop benchmark on a MacBook Pro and a Safari benchmark on a MacBook then how would that help you decide which machine would suit your needs. However, if you use Photoshop for both and you see that the MacBook is only 25% slower than the MacBook Pro then you can tell if it will be fast enough for you.

I personally don't care if you subscribe or not but I do care that you are trying to spread false information that other potential subscribers might see.

Frank

Bingo!

That was such a huge variety of things and you hated every single one. So what is the point of you even posting?

I do believe that I stated that I did enjoy some of the articles and I even asked for more of some.

I also love how you dis the article about the web because you don't use the web but then dis another item by saying that you can get more info faster on the web.

I can find info with a basic google, yahoo, alta vista, etc. search or by checking out some tech sites without having to use the Web 2.0 technologies.  I don't do Myspace or anything like it, I don't use online backups, I don't use online reviews of restaraunts, etc, I rarely use Wikipedia, nor do I fully trust the content.  I don't need Web 2.0 to get the basics done.

I'm actually sorry I wasted my time with such a detailed response to begin with since you are such a negative person anyway and I don't think anything would please you. This is especially evidenced when you hated on the article that met your exact request for type of article.

The article that I supposedly "hated on" was of the type I enjoy, but didn't cover the subject to the depth I prefer.  If something doesn't meet my needs, why should I like it?

No, I feel that you haven't contributed in any helpful way to this particular post. In fact, I think that your posts have been so full of factual inaccuracies that they have been a waste and would have been harmful to people reading the post if they hadn't been refuted.

I have no problem with people that disagree with me. The problem is that you have the same attitude as the big news organizations. You think that they are two sides to every story. When one "side" is factually incorrect then it isn't a valid counterpoint. It is simply wrong. There are still things known as facts and your posts were riddled with so many factual inaccuracies that it was annoying.

Unfortunately they also ditched the staffvids that in my opinion was both the primary reason for the cd and the best part of the magazinesubscription. Getting MA in the mailbox every month wasn't just so that I could read all the latest technobable but to see what they'd come up with in theire new video. I miss the videos greatly, I think I got to rewatch the ones I have...

Why don't you go back to your busy work life and leave us alone to enjoy the magazine and the web.

I'm really sorry that you feel I haven't contributed to this forum enough to be allowed to stay here anymore.  I guess the last 7 years just wasn't enough for you.  If we kicked out everyone that didn't agree with your views, you would have a very lonely web existence.  I disagree with many people on here, but I still respect their veiws and allow them to express them.  To do otherwise is to be a hypocrite.  I'm sorry you can't see that. hmm

How can there be factual inaccuracies in a statement of opinion?  I said that the magazine no longer meets my needs and has evolved over the years to be different from what it once was.  You are trying to read more into that than you should.  If you compare the current mags to the first ones, you will see a big difference in content.

I am done arguing with you.  It seems that no matter how much I try to explain my views, you keep ripping them down.  The mag no longer appeals to me, but I guess you would consider that statement inaccurate.  The world is not black and white like you seem to see it.  Right and wrong, light and dark.  I'm glad I don't live in your world.

Even when analyzing what you've written you are factually incorrect. When I talk about factual inaccuracies I'm not talking about your opinion, the parts of your post when you stated whether or not you liked certain articles. I am instead talking about the majority of your posts where you stated as fact that the majority of the articles were about Photoshop, FCP, etc. I am talking about where you stated that the review of the MacBook listed as a con that it wasn't good with Photoshop. You simply made up statement after statement and presented them as facts. They were NOT your opinion and they were NOT true. So get over yourself and actually pay attention to what you wrote.
