Re: I owned 5 pc's starting with a p133 to a 1.7 Dell. NOW TIME TO GO MAC
macsales.com is a cool place. You know I think I'm having more fun this way, Buying the G3. I'm learning more with you guys, than if I would of just bought a new MAC. Then when to support thru Apple. It would of when just fine that way, but this way when I do buy new, I'll be and old pro. I'm sure you guys see what a freshman I am at all this. From what I'm learning and seeing Steve Jobs formula is so close to perfect. I've been with Windows since win 95 then win 98 to now xp. I AM NOT GOING TO VISTA! Done. I know about Jaguar now, I'm 3 OS behide. IT"S BETTER THAN XP. My little iMAC and you guys have sold me. MY Dell running slow again, wow I AM In SHOCK. Maybe if I keep it off the web then it will work fine lol. All the virus software in the world can't keep it safe.

Great historical document. I had forgotten it was 10.3 which brought us the Mac version of Fast User Switching.

Except excel at gaming.
Macs can excel at gaming if there were games and video hardware available compared to peecees. A Mac can play games and a peecee can play games.
The lack of video hardware or games does not make the Mac less........... it makes the support for the platform less. And a Mac with comparable video hardware will run with any Peecee on games. Blame game developers, ATI and Nvidia but not the Mac.

Firewire is like USB 2.0 but better.
One advantage is that you can boot off of a Firewire drive if it has a system installed on it.
Some of the CRT iMacs will boot from USB..... My 400MHz will and I'm almost positive the 600MHz model will also boot off an external USB hard drive with an OS on it.
iMacs are fun to take apart and tinker with so I would just stick a larger drive inside the iMac anyway and save a little money, but external cases are nice to have for backup.

what size harddrive do you have in the 400MHz. What games run on yours. I thought mine was a 400 but when I got it it was a 600. Plus it snow white, I thought it was going to be blue. Watch that kid on youtube upgrade his Imac cdrom to dvd rom ect. Just copy and paste the part one & part two on youtube. It really cool.

For a lot of info on just about every Mac ever made, take a look at Apple History or download Mac Tracker (donationware). There you can find out about things like hardware limits and such. For example, there were no native 600 MHz G3 PowerMacs, so what you probably have is a G3 model with a CPU upgrade and some motherboard limitation prevents it from working at a more conventional 667 MHz. Also your G3's motherboard likely has the 128 GB hard drive limit so you cannot attach a hard drive larger than that directly to your motherboard (although you can use a larger drive if you use an add-in hard drive controller which includes the ATAPI-6 standard). This limit does not apply to drives attached via FireWire or USB--there are some older external drive encloures which have the 128 GB limit but anything new should not.

The iMac's CPU (All-in-One) cannot be upgraded. I think the previous poster is referring to a G3 Powermac tower.
Only 4 Macs ? There are many people with at least that many and more, People get hooked on them and collect Macs. Don't be too surprised that you own 4 Macs within a few years..... There's a reason this site and Mag used to be called MacAddict !

Name change ? To broaden the appeal from Space Cadet Addicts to landlubbers and sunday drivers.
Max lives, one way or another.

One small thing. The word "Mac" is not put into ALL CAPS normally. The all caps version MAC is an abbreviation in networking.

Re: I owned 5 pc's starting with a p133 to a 1.7 Dell. NOW TIME TO GO MAC
I really don't think your G3 will boot from a USB drive. USB 1.1 (which you have) would be painfully slow to boot from, if the system would even do it. Pick up an external Firewire drive ad use it for storage. You can use the internal drive for the OS and boot from that, and then have the external one to keep stuff on. As for other upgrades, I'd hold off. A G3 isn't going to really be economical to upgrade. You could always look into a newer G4 tower or even a G5 (towers are, like almost all Windows machines, completely upgradeable). You could go out and get a new Mac Pro, but you'll pay for it....

How old is Mac OS 10.2, Jaguar . Did it come out when Windows XP come out, or is it like Windows 98. Please don't say Windows 95 LOL
XP was released Oct 2001, Jaguar 10.2 was released Aug 2002
If you can find a cheap copy of Panther 10.3 ... It will run much better than 10.2 on your hardware.
