Concerts

I went to my second concert of this summer (and probably my last for '07) last night at the Tweeter Center to see Alice In Chains and Velvet Revolver, both of whom were absolutely amazing. I had a great time, and my only regrets are that I am terrible at remembering setlists and that VR covered Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here the previous night. I would've killed to see that!

First thing's first, if anyone knows how to find set lists for stuff, lemme know.

Secondly, what concerts have you guys gone to see over this summer/year?

Mine for '07:
Richard Thompson
Alice In Chains / Velvet Revolver

Re: Concerts

Porcupine Tree.  Fantastic as usual, only they played in a seated theater.  Big mistake!  Never schedule a rock concert for a seated theater, or you'll never get the audience energy levels required to fuel the band.  By the end of the concert, they just told everyone to stand up and swarm the bit of space between the first row of seats and the stage; the effect was amazing.

Re: Concerts

Went to Norah Jones at Red Rocks early this summer, and I'm headed to the Beastie Boys this Friday night. I'm really looking forward to that, I haven't seen them live since a show in SF back in 1992 or so.

Re: Concerts

I dont like concerts unless its something like you might see at the Kennedy Center or the Corcoran or Phillips where you enjoy sitting down and no one is splashing beer or sweating on you.

If I see a good band kick out the jams, I want to see it up close and personal at a small show. I used to go to them all the time, now its few and far between, mostly being hardcore bands and solo acoustic kind of shows. Indie hipsters of the world- be on the look out for Georgie James; good stuff.

I agree - the smaller the venue, the better.  Though if you can get into the standing room only section a few people back from the stage in an auditorium show, the feeling is certainly something else!

Re: Concerts

Best show I saw this year was Björk with Joanna Newsom at Red Rocks.  Beautiful place to see a show and amazing performances.  The best outdoor sound quality I've ever encountered, too.  For those not familiar with Red Rocks:

I saw the Smashing Pumpkins at the Fillmore in San Francisco earlier this month. Easily one of the best, if not the best, show I've ever seen.

Re: Concerts

Recent concerts:
Pelican w/ Clouds and Priestbird - 8/10
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum w/ Secret Chiefs 3 - 9/10
Isis w/ Intronaut and Torche - 9/10

But by far the best concert I've been to in the last year was for the band Battles. They had a huge amount of energy and are mindblowingly amazing musicians. The crowd was literally bouncing up and down to the music. Not for everyone, but probably the most original music to come out in the last 10 years.

Check the band's web sites, and also see if there are links to fansites. Most bands list their tours and give varying degrees of detail'

Honestly, there is probably a tapershow out for it, and that would give you a setlist, so hunt the torrent sites. Lots of bands tolerate free distribution of shows, some even encourage it. Porcupine Tree seems like they might be one of those bands.

Weird.

The new singer, William DuVall, is absolutely fantastic. Sounded just like Layne. I was impressed. Amazing show.

What I find ridiculous is that they played 12 shows at the Fillmore between July 15th and Aug 1st. TWELVE! Practically in a row.

From what I hear a lot of the shows were fairly vacant because, well, they played for like half a month.

I don't think I've ever heard of a band doing that before.

Re: Concerts

I saw the Jagermeister music tour earlier this year with Stone Sour, Shadows Fall, Lacuna Coil and Conquest  and that was just kick ass. I'm going to Family Values next week, Weird Al the week after that and possibly Alice Cooper.

Are you going to see Alice Cooper at the Uptown also?

Lots of bands have done it; it's called a residency. The objective is not just to play the same stuff over and over again, but to write new material while there. The new songs Billy wrote/ has written while on the residencies (they did a similar residency in Asheville, NC) are absolutely fantastic.

jeff-o: the tickets were $25 each (2 ticket limit) with a ticketmaster charge of $7. You could only get your tickets at will call with an ID that matches you to the buyer, and you had to go directly into the venue after receiving your tickets. They entirely cut out scalpers.
