I Drank the Kool Aid

My new Macbook Pro arrives today via Fedex.   I've been a Toshiba Laptop user since 1990.  And i'm finally FINALLY fed up with the problems i've been having with the computer and the MS platform.  My friends are all Mac people and have been bugging me for years to give it up but i really do/did like the feel of the Toshiba desgin - just not its reliability and software issues.

Obviously, my big question is, 'other than MS office, excel, etc. , will all my files be able to merge over to the OS system?'

Specifically, Outlook Express messages/address book. I have many, many messages saved in folders for business that i can't afford to lose and don't see an option in the export section of OE that allows me to choose something compatible for Mac.   I'm POSITIVE i'm not the only one with this concern.

Any guidance to a previous thread would be great (i couldn't find one).

Thanks,

stevo

Re: I Drank the Kool Aid

Here's a bit of info straight from Apple. Apparently they'll do it for free at an Apple store.

Not knowing exactly what kinds of files you have on your peecee, I still feel safe saying that you generally shouldn't have a problem with much at all. Mail is the only toughie since, last I checked, Outlook doesn't have a lot of export options. IIRC, think you can do it by importing Outlook's PST into Netscape on the peecee (or was it Thunderbird?) and export to a standard MBox from there. I think you can also import the PST into Entourage on the Mac and export to MBox from there.

Re: I Drank the Kool Aid

Oh and here's a $10 program called O2M that seems to do it.

That's perfect. Thanks for the suggestions.  Props to Jamaica Plain!  (I'm from Marblehead originally)

You can export your contacts to a cvs or vcard and import them to osx Address Book. For emails, the easiest way woud be using an IMAP server. See these articles:

What does this have to do with Kool Aid?

Alright, now, who wants to be transistorized?

You know it gets hot in summer. Anyway I still think stevo should wait another couple of month or two when it gets colder and if you live way up north you can mix your koolaid with snow from heaven!

"Drinking the Koolaid" has a negative conotation to it... I think you'll find your first Mac experience to be a positive one.  More like "I've Seen The Light!"

Unfortunately, most people drink the Kool Ade after they've seen the light.

Re: I Drank the Kool Aid

I know what the capabilites are of the mac and i'm sure i'll adapt pretty quickly, but having been using the windows system for so long its still a matter of creature comforts, and familiarity.   For instance, i miss the back space key (not the same as the delete key) as well as the 'home' and 'end' key's. Just little stuff like that.  But the seemlessness of the mac system certainly can't be beat by xp or vista, that's for sure.

Do you mean the forward delete key? (i.e. it deletes the character after it, instead of the one before it.  If so, I have that as well as the home and end keys on my mac keyboard.
