This should make a lot of people happy.

The timing was smart, the controversy was much lower in volume. It won't be a big victory for the Dems.

Actually, although it could be viewed as a partisan attempt, the criticism of Bertie's tenure was about governmental corruption that transcended partisanship.

I guess he would have had to stay until the end of the administration, otherwise. At least according to that likely bogus rule that turd blossom quoted as the reason for him to jump the ship.

Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

I wonder if there's a way to arrange things so there can be a recess appointment or some other non-confirmed method.

Freedom is on the march !

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Bush'd have to break his word to Harry Reid. Wouldn't be the first time.

Oh please.  Rumsfeld, Rove and now Gonzales.  Right, no victory.

Anyway, it shouldn't be about "victory" it should be about either not hiring incompetent, political hacks in the first place and/or letting the incompetents go BEFORE it becomes so dire.

But hey, that's the issue isn't it?  The upper lever smurf don't ever see the incompetence in the first place so we arrive at all the messiness politically.  But hey, let's just blame the Democrats!

Effective 9.17.

I think his 'mission:accomplished' is in the PatActII reauthorization, which as we now know, includes several fine print items, and the legalization by Congress of the FISA violations with heavy odds against a repeal of same.

But, still, there a riff off Howard Cosell's immortal words: "DOWN GOES GONZO! DOWN GOES GONZO!"

Competence isn't the standard.

A Chertoff nomination would be some nicely distracting theatre.

In any sane polity, the combined results of 9/11, Iraq, Katrina, Congressional scandals and a ballooning deficit would've completely destroyed the Republican Party. The fact that this hasn't happened suggests that the old rules no longer apply (unfortunately).

Or maybe what's smurfed-up is the fact that the Democrats haven't been able to convert the above-entitled catastrophes into massive political gains.

Regardless, what is is what is.

Agreed. There won't be a replacement confirmed. This is pro-forma to make it look like there's a new nominee. Meanwhile, Clement will continue the current regime:

A Bushie from waaay-back.

It will be a net plus for the forces in power, playing the partisan non-confirmation card, and flying the same crap under the radar. Could even seep into the '08 elections, what with the DoJ/USA political indictment/investigation  caveats whited-out from the SOP as described in the handbook for DoJ/USA.

What I like are the freeper-types who are always screaming the "Don't Blame Bush!" meme (or rather they scream that Dems always "Blame Bush!") but when you get down to it, it is all ultimately Bush's fault.  He hired all of the buffoons, and he's run the US government in the ground just like he did Arubusto and Harken.  He's a moron and an idiot and there's just no way to get around this fact.

Carry on.

OK.

Early returns are in.

CNN:

Did Attorney General Gonzales make the right decision by stepping down?
Yes     86%     11117
No     14%     1810
Total Votes: 12927

CSPAN's Capitol News:
http://www.capitalnews.org/

Did Attorney General Alberto Gonzales receive an unfair amount of criticism?
Yes
    14%
No
    86%

Total Votes: 811

I wonder if those splits are accurate no matter the sample size.

Bush says aide's name was 'dragged through the mud' by opponents

Re: Gonzales resigns as attorney general: official

Considering that several Republicans were calling for him to resign, the poll results aren't terribly surprising.

I wonder how many neocon idealists wish they could go back in time to the 2000 primaries and back a different horse.

Actual neo-cons? I bet most of them. They'll have to denounce Bush lest their entire ideology be tainted by his incompetence. Not that their ideology had a chance anyway, but they need to pin the blame on someone, and you can be sure it won't be on themselves.

They're statists; they'll just swing back to the Democrats. They're not going anywhere, but they may lie low for a while.
