Spill Proof?
Is the Macbook Pro's keyboard spill proof? I want to know, just in case. I actually have spilled a bit of water on the center of the keyboard, but it doesn't seem to have done anything. Apple doesn't advertise it as spill proof, though, so I thought I'd ask here.

Nope. A little bit of water won't hurt anything because the electronics on the keyboard are hidden under plastic nipples, but something like a Coke spill would be the end, I'm afraid. Just be careful with drinks around your computer

Re: Spill Proof?
If you spill anything with protein or sugar on it you'll pretty much have to take it in to get a new keyboard installed. The event will probably run the cost of about $400.

My MBP's keyboard survived an attack of shaving cream. Still works perfectly.

What a novel idea!
Using Front Row for a shaving mirror.
Computers never do what you want them to do; only what you tell them to do.

Re: Spill Proof?
Haha. Hardly.
I was on a camp, and the only place to charge my laptop was the bathroom. Someone shook their shaving cream with the lid off, and about half the can landed on the laptop. I just wiped it off with a napkin and it's still in tip top shape.

Re: Spill Proof?
My Powerbook had wine spilled on the keyboard and optical drive area, and I never had any hardware problems due to that.

No, no, no, and no
A few dribbles might not kill you, but sticky liquids can screw up your keys, and if any liquids seep below your keyboard, onto your logic board, that's going to be bad news.

Thanks for the response (and the entertaining stories)! I'll be careful.

Re: Spill Proof?
If bad luck is out, remove all electricity (as in don't forget the battery) and let it dry for 24/48 hours.. If it was water it should be ok. If it's some other liquid you would maybe need to open it and brush (gently with alcohol) the residues. They could cause corrosion.
My Powerbook survived drinking youghourt, I had to remove the keyboard and actually wash it in water. The current macbook I have was resurrected from wine spill with a toothbrush and alcohol
Better be carefull to beggin with though
btw: in case of spill, it's proably better to lay the machine on the side (vertically) so the liquid can run in an other direction than the motherboard.

One other word of caution: apple cider will kill a G5's keyboard. It uses the same tech as a macbook keyboard, so the warning still applies.
On the other hand, I like this MacAlly keyboard much better...

Why are people incapable of keeping their drinks upright?

Re: Spill Proof?
I know this is about the MBP, but the Macbook's keyboard is pretty spill resistant. It has the aforementioned plastic nipples, which seem to protect from the spills.
I spilled some soy sauce on my keyboard the other day when i was eating sushi :-[ A few keys are sticky now, but all it takes is to pop the keys off and clean the mechanisms under there.

Once Apple switched to slot loading drives, people had nowhere to put them?
