Getting left in the dust
Not quite how I feel, but I've been close.
I just started my senior year today.
Basically, for those of you in college now, what do you wish you had done or done differently when you were in my position? I've been meaning to ask this on here for a while.

Re: Getting left in the dust
Not worried so much.
I look back on high school now and wonder why the heck I was always so stressed out. No one cares about your high school once you make it to college and no one cares about your college once you make it to graduate/professional school.
So I recommend doing the best you can, but don't worry about all the small stuff. Enjoy your last days of non-reality before you join pseudo-reality (college).
Good luck.

Re: Getting left in the dust
Not goofed off so much.
Out of 7 periods in a day I only had 1 class where my grade was based on anything other than attendance. I took 3 directed studies which meant 3 hours of WoW everyday...in school. The others were similarly joke classes.
wait...nvm I don't regret that at all. Just make sure you bring your gameface come next fall. Everyone says it but its worth saying again...college is on a different level. If you aren't on top of things you will get left in the dust

Re: Getting left in the dust
I wish that I hadn't cared so much about what others thought about me.
Also, I wished that I realized I wasnt the only one completely hating life. Looking back and those that I still talk to, said that they were as miserable as moi, even if they were mr/miss popularity.

bullsmurf. The same self-promotion, gregariousness, and self-confidence that made "stars" in high school pay off in PR and marketing pretty well.
And for every Bill Gates "Geek's Revenge" fantasy fulfilled, there are a million Best Buy Geek Squad employees.

Re: Getting left in the dust
Also just started senior year. Today was the first time I truly realized how much of my time is wasted there. Because of a half dozen fights that broke out on campus last year, my school has taken a fairly large grant to create an "advisory" period, which will be coupled with a new citizenship grade. Once a week, we meet with our advisor class to do...something. Today the activity was to make diagrams about what makes a person a good friend. We did that. For an hour.

Re: Getting left in the dust
Start looking for jobs or internships, or scholarships for grad school.
Take a senior "projects" course or a thesis course. Not just going for the GPA.

Sounds like kids will just get more pissed and go on killing sprees.

When the sheer boredom puts us to sleep, no more fighting. Problem solved.

Re: Getting left in the dust
Here's my plan for this year :
Create a good college list with safety schools, etc.
Retake SATS (raise math score) aim for a combined reading and math score of above 1200.
Continue to work (I make NY state minimum wage) on mondays and tuesdays
Keep the school cycling club going
Keep GPA above 90 or 91 percent
Start college essays soon.... as in this month.
Work on some kind of portfolio for art applications.

Definitely, study abroad. Thanks, Malkin. I forgot about that.

No, but simply because of the cost issue. I would have loved to though. I am in AP Spanish now.
I cant say this is true for all schools but studying abroad is much, much easier to do here (University of Georgia) than it would have been in high school. As a Japanese student, I've looked into the program and its amazing how much they facilitate it. The tuition you're already paying for going to school (which is covered by the Hope scholarship in my case) pays for the tuition of the school I would go to in Japan, even if it's more than what you currently pay (again this stuff is all just how it works here, could be totally different at your college of choice). Basically, the only extra stuff you have to pay for yourself is airfare and then living expenses (assuming you live in the university housing they provide).
I guess what I'm saying is don't worry about studying abroad while in HS, you'll get plenty of opportunities in college

Re: Getting left in the dust
The 'process' has started in earnest. Saturday night spent doing SAT prep for early October SATS, considering applications to Canadian schools like McGill - then discovering that I only have one SAT subject test when I need two.
Make plans to take literature SAT subject, worried it won't be enough.
Wondering why I had almost zero prompts to do this in late Junior year.
Wondering which teacher(s) I will politely request a formal written recomendation from.
Wonder if I should apply Early Decision for Cooper Union art or for the Hunter honors college thru CUNY.
Fun.
How could I forget :
Worried about not taking a math or science course this semester (Physics is a struggle for me and I need to raise my average, and I can't take an easier math or science course because it conflicts with my required schedule).
Hoping that my massive list of Extra curricular activities, sports, and jobs held can make up for some of this.
And how oh how oh how could I forget?
Figuring out how much my parents can pay
Figuring out how much I can pay
Figuring out how many loans I can take out so as to not be paying them off for 15 years after college.
Figuring out if the cycling career might actually go somewhere and I can skip this smurf for 20 years and go to Europe with a pro team.

Re: Getting left in the dust
I took some classes by myself in empty classrooms. These classes generally were not offered by the school. The textbooks and me. I checked in with the teacher every few days.
