Re: iPod Touch
Dumb question: Can one listen to a song while surfing at the same time? I live in Canada so we don't have any iPhone-like gadgets to play around with, hence the dumb questions.

It's obvious that you'd be able to do this.

How would that work?
Pop a card in and wait 5 minutes for the iPod to index the card? Or not have any album art or ratings or gapless playback or anything like that?
It would be a neat feature but it doesn't fit with the iTunes way of doing things, and Apple is not going to compromise ease of use to do it.
I think they should have kept bluetooth, but I see why they didn't.

Ok I see your point. Its just nice when you want to see your photo's from your camera without the need of a computer. Also you have extra cheap storage.

I still like it, but the name sucks. Especially after watching the video where that guy says it about 50 times. Ugh. 'Touch'...

Re: iPod Touch
For additional storage space and battery power, something akin to this:
http://www.newertech.com/products/vidplus.php
would be nice.
I have the nupower video+ battery for my video iPod, and even though it's a little bulky, it was a Godsend on both my trip to the midwest, and day before yesterday when our power was out from 2pm to 2 am.

Re: iPod Touch
I love the concept of the iPod touch, but there's no way I can justify that cost when the maximum storage is just 16GB. Hopefully we'll see updated storage capacity within the next few months/years. *crosses fingers*

Obviously we'll see it in the next few years, but it's "only" 16GB because flash memory is still really expensive/MB compared to HD. For this pricepoint, 16GB is plenty. A 16GB flash drive alone is about $150, so just imagine even doubling the iPod's memory would put it back in to the people bitching about the price (being too high, that is, not that people aren't bitching about the price regardless).
Personally, as an aspiring engineer, I kind of hate flash memory in general for its inelegance, and I would really like another technology to replace it.

In the computing world, sticking with powers of two is sometimes useful, but in the case of flash storage, there's no practical advantage in doing it that way.
Like hell, there isn't! Every address line you add to a device exactly doubles the address space.

One time I bought an Dell Axim x3i Pocket PC (yes I know...leave me alone) and it came with built in wifi but no bluetooth, but when I actually got it, the little antenna "nub" had both a WiFi symbol AND a Bluetooth signal
Needless, to say, I was miffed when I later read that the x3i was originally meant to have Bluetooth, but it was dropped for costs sake...except they decided it would be cheaper to use the same antenna covers that they'd previously decided to use. So for a few minutes, I thought I'd have some bluetooth action for free...but alas...Dell broke my heart.
That's the end of the story. You can all go home now.

The UI comp has been corrected on Apple's German website:
http://www.apple.com/de/ipodtouch/gallery/index10.html
Those are never shots of the actual UI. They are usually Photoshop or Illustrator design comps that are applied to the devise after product shots have been taken.
I imagine the iPhone's design comps started from the same source material as the iPhone's. However, someone forgot to delete the little bluetooth layer. I've definitely done stupid stuff like this at work.

I think you mean three 2 GB chips and I'm not entire sure that is always the case. Considering solid state memory can be mixed and matched, I'd say 2 & 4 combos are more likely.

CF cards? I guess that would be a large card reader though.

Re: iPod Touch
Mini SD isn't nearly as common as Transflash/Micro SD, but I get the point.
There was a iPod dock connector to USB thing that could transfer digital pictures... think that'd work to dump the content directly into the photo thing on this new device? Before I think it just dumped it on a folder. Regardless, I wonder if a 10-in-1 reader or whatever could plug into that thing.

If this thing actually supports a few decent applications, I think Apple just made a PDA.
