There's no such thing as price gouging in a free market.

Re: iPhone Exchange Program?
So I wonder why they dropped the price? Perhaps the iPhone isn't selling as well as Apple originally forecasted?

Re: iPhone Exchange Program?
If they keep the old prices, people would rather buy itouch. There are quite a handful who mainly bought it for the pda function and wifi. O course it's a win win for apple but that'd leave cingular sour.

Ya know I feel ya'lls pain but there is a part of me that is screaming "Suckers!".
**Crystal Ball**
So in another two months they can add an upgraded 16Gb model. It's there already Apple only needs to add the phone guts.
The pricing looks all screwed up. An 8Gb Touch for $299 or an 80Gb Classic for $249. WTF
Gimme space!

The base model mac pro is the same price as it was the day it was introduced, 13 months ago.

They streamlined production by dropping the less popular configuration. Setting themselves up for world domination during the holiday shopping season!

That article was for July sales, no surprise really since the phone came out at the end of June. I just wonder if sales have cooled down more then Apple was expecting and that's the reason for the price drop? Even if the cost per phone is less now now that they've ramped up production, why pass the savings on to the consumer? You think if demand was strong it would just mean more money for Apple and their shareholders.
Anyway at the end of the day I guess this is a good thing for consumers (still I'd be pissed if I bought one back when they first came out).

The iPhone was being sold with a HUGE markup. The devise costs about $250 to manufacture, and they were selling it for $500 / $600 bucks. That's insane.

With a 2 year contract committment, nonetheless. It is insane: its a testament to their marketing and product development genuis to get people to pay that much.

So Apple owes it to you to sell a luxury item for less than what the market will pay for it?

Re: iPhone Exchange Program?
I'd appreciate it if Apple would at least offer a free year of .mac to the early adopters. I mean, 2 months and a $200 price cut is pretty unheard of for an Apple product.

Exactly.
Apple owes early adapters nothing. The very basis of a transaction, or an exchange of good, services or currency only occurs when both sides of the transaction feel it is worth it.

Still, they may want to consider some sort of gift or something to prevent everyone from waiting 6 months for them to drop the price in the future. Something like a small gift certificate or a rebate on .mac. Something that doesn't cost them a lot but will at appease some of the early adopters.

Re: iPhone Exchange Program?
Considering everything else Apple was working on got screwed over by the iPhone just to get it out of the door, it's about time something smurfed up happened with it.
OMG it's cheaper now! Get over it. Unless you bought the damn thing yesterday you have nothing to complain about.
I'd be more pissed that it was still glued to ATNT than that the price dropped.
OLD TECHNOLOGY GETS CHEAPER OVER TIME! and you bought an apple product....get used to it.

I find the counter rants just as amusing as the rants about the price drop.

Gimmee a frickin break - I just finished a 5 page, 3-day thread on how Apple's prices were too high for christ sake. So lowering it is bad too? Funny.

Anyone who bought an iPhone that shipped within the last ten calendar days can get a refund of the difference or credit for it from Apple.

Re: iPhone Exchange Program?
Personally I have never understood why companies like Sony, MSFT, and Nintendo never released their products with super high prices and then ramped them down as supply met demand. Sell the PS3 for $1,000 right off the bat....1 month later 800....and so on.....why let ebay sellers reap the benefit....
How long did it take the Razr to start getting it's price cut....or the new blackberry......cell phones is a completely different game.

Re: iPhone Exchange Program?
In addition
Basically, 14 days for Apple (and probably similar for AT&T if you bought it from them).
After that you're probably out of luck. There has been some stories of people getting a supportive Apple employee on the phone to give them a credit or whatnot but I don't think that is all that common (if real).
