7 Reasons the 21st Century is Making You Miserable
http://www.cracked.com/index.php?name=News&sid=2370
I think this is actually a pretty accurate commentary about the way socializing is headed (or has headed) for many Americans, and perhaps for some people here. I know that, personally, this article describes perfectly many of the problems I was having two years ago.
Since then, I've moved to a new city with friends and am far happier than I was being antisocial and spending too much time on the internet. I guess this is really a good case for moderation, but I think others believe that online communication is a suitable substitute for human interaction, and I don't think that's true for a lot of people.
What do you, Internet friends, think about the points brought in this article?

Re: 7 Reasons the 21st Century is Making You Miserable
I think the constant need for people to blame technology for the problems of the world is interesting. Blaming the tool is seldom the answer. Perhaps we as a society is just on one of those declines. It happens. Going after the symptoms such as instant messaging isn't going to help any.

Re: 7 Reasons the 21st Century is Making You Miserable
So you don't think that technology has been an important component in isolating individuals in our society? Sure, people choose to use computers, but the point here isn't that the Internet is evil or whatever, but that these choices can perhaps be more harmful than people realize.
Society doesn't just "go into one of those declines" randomly. There are factors that bring it about. The isolation of the individual can create problems in society, and technology seems to be making that easier than ever before.

Re: 7 Reasons the 21st Century is Making You Miserable
You're right, societies don't decline randomly. I never said that. I said blaming the tools we use is silly. If you take the time to look at how long this has been going on and how long the tools that people are blaming have existed, they don't match up.
Look at the decline of clubs and social groups. It happened way before the craze of instant messaging and world of warcraft. Heck, it happened before the internet was more than just something geeks and academics used.
People find tools to do what they want, they don't find tools to make them do something.

I have used the internet to meet many, many people. Rather than being isolating I have found the net to be fantastic for finding other like minded people. People who I end up meeting in real life.
Most of my interests have an on-line component and that enhances and enables me.
I met my wife online.
I think certain types of people have always been isolated. Today they sit and surf instead of sitting and watching TV or listening the the radio. Or maybe they just do all 3.

Re: 7 Reasons the 21st Century is Making You Miserable
Another good example is blackberries. You see all these business people scurrying around constantly using them. People complain that they are used to basically tie someone into their job 24/7 or something similar. So, which came first? The blackberry enabling this kind of behavior or the unhealthy desire to increase productivity in employees at the cost of their personal time? Businesses have often tried to maximize employee productivity. They just used the internet to do it better (or so they perceive). If you remove the blackberry companies will just find something else to use. It is short sited to go after the immediate frustration.

Yes, I totally agree with what you just said here. I dont agree with the link though.
I think sometimes about how many cars you pass on the beltway everyday. But notice how even there I said something that speaks volumes about the way society is alienated from each other- I said cars, not people. But think about it: if you were walking the same route, and everyone else was walking too, maybe you'd wave to each other, recognize each other as people, maybe have a conversation etc.
Thats not to say cars and interstate highways are the bane of modernity, boviously. Its just a minor point amidst a whole lot of other points you could analyze that basically shows that technology has this effect that comes with it of abstracting our existence in weird ways.
On the other hand, humans are extremely adaptable. Pariah says he finds more friends with the internet, for instance. But many studies found that increased time spent online correlated with a tendency towards feelings of depression and isolation. Parents are worried these days about whether or not their children will be able to appreciate the outdoors and experience of nature.
Martin Heidegger wrote some brilliant pieces on technology and humanity, I think he made a lot of valid points concerning it.

I text my girlfriend all the time. We can't really talk that much during the week due to our differing work schedules (2nd shift vs 3rd shift), and the fact that shes always busy. Our respective workplaces also really frown upon cell phone conversations. I guess this is mild in comparison. I don't think some people ever stop texting.

Texting is more like passing notes. It has its use depending on circumstances. You pass notes in class, not at the bus stop.
But you're right - people do it WAY too much.

I agree with point #4. Far too much, "everyone's a winner" mentality going on in today's world.
If you suck, you should be told, so you can get better.

I agree.
I'm not that old (early 20s), but I don't feel the compulsion to run to my cell phone everytime someone calls me. It use to be people just called you at home, left a message, and you get back to them on your own time. Nowadays, people seem almost compulsive about being able to contact someone instantly, all the time, and to be contacted instantly. It shouldn't be that big of a deal, IMO.

Like I'm going to let a guy who stopped talking to a friend for 6 months and sent him a dead rat in the mail because of a texted "no, thank you" tell me I'm miserable.

Part of my problem is that I'm just too tired to entertain people at the end of the day. And, they always claim they're too busy/tired as well.
