Metal case for Macbook

The name’s Bond. James Bond.

The Ncase Portable Safe is an aluminum briefcase that, when closed and locked, functions as a portable antitheft vault for your laptop, as long as the case is closed. Inside the case is a compartment with movable dividers and a Velcro strap. The included 3/8-inch-thick steel security cable also fits inside.

The case has two three-digit numerical combination locks, which can be set independently. One end of the steel cable has a loop; the other has a chrome steel stud that fits through a port on the outside of the case. By placing one of the included pins through the end of the cable, the cable attaches to the case.

Despite its relative thinness, the cable was thick enough to resist severing with all of the sharp implements we had on hand. We were also unable to force the case open with a hammer and chisel.

There aren’t enough dividers to keep the MacBook and MacBook Pro from sliding around a bit from side to side as you carry it, but as long as you don’t shake the case, your ’book should remain well-protected.

THE BOTTOM LINE
With the right tool, a thief could probably cut the cable on this case, but not without extraordinary effort. Of the five products we tested, we trust the Portable Safe the most to protect our MacBook Pro, although Ncase should seriously consider including a pair of dark sunglasses with every Portable Safe it sells. Everywhere we went with it, people asked if we were secret agents.

COMPANY: Ncase
CONTACT: www.car-safe.com
PRICE: $99
REQUIREMENTS: MacBook or MacBook Pro
Includes shoulder strap. Thick steel cable should discourage casual thieves.
Cable is lubricated to fit in plastic bag before shipping, so you’ll need to wash your hands after removing it. Scratches and dents may appear after long-term use.
