Farming for iPhones

On July 4, five members of the new environmental group, TheWhoFarm planted themselves securely as the first in line for iPhone 3G’s at Apple’s Fifth Avenue Store in New York City. They not only hope to set the Guinness World Record for “longest time waiting in line to buy something,” but have much, much higher hopes than that.

How about an organic farm in place of the White House lawn to start with? Daniel Bowman Simon, the group’s leader told Apple 2.0, “We’re here to restore the edible landscape. We want to bring the seeds of change back to the White House.” The President’s residence is not the only landscape the group has set its sights on. Sustainability, affordable housing, energy security, and locally grown organic food (delivered by bicycle or pedicab no less) are all on top of the group’s agenda that they would be happy to discuss with anyone who is willing to chat with them as they wait in line.

But why would a group so concerned with the environment be so eager to purchase the cellular device that Greenpeace has given the big thumbs-down? “We see it as a technology that can liberate us from our desks,” Simon declared. He is also hoping to pick up a couple of extras for Barack Obama and John McCain.

Publicity aside, there is a chance that TheWhoFarm’s endeavor has been all for naught, as rumors spread that the iPhone 3G’s only to be had on July 11 from AT&T locations and that Apple Stores will not be selling the devices (without contract at $599 and $699) until a later date.

We've been told by an Apple rep that the iPhone will be available form the Apple Store on July 11. Although, no word has come from Apple on launch time and pricing.
